EIU begins conference play looking to return to postseason play after missing out on the OVC tournament last season for the first time in eight years. EIU opens the OVC season hosting last year s tournament champions Belmont who come to Lantz Arena at 8-5 on the season. THIRD TIMES THE CHARM Freshman Allison Van Dyke has been a highlight of the EIU women s basketball team all season long earning her third OVC Freshman of the Week honor this week. Van Dyke overcame her two-game scoring slump netting 5 points against Cincinnati to tie her career high for the third time. The Westfield, Ind. native is one of three Panthers to start in every game so far this year averaging.3 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. She has scored in double-figures in eight games this season recording. STRIVING FOR GREATNESS The Panther s lone senior is securing her mark among some of EIU s best players in her final season. So far this year Erica Brown has accumulated 88 rebounds to lead the team and ranks fifth in the OVC with a 7.3 rebound per game average. Brown is just 5 rebounds shy of becoming the 5th member of the 6 career rebound club at EIU. The Hoyleton, Ill. native has also been setting the pace this season with 8 blocks on the year placing her third in the conference. Black was hired May 6, 3 to take over the program following a long career as an assistant coach, most recently at Ohio State. While with the Buckeyes program Black helped coach the team to seven straight NCAA Tournament appearances including six Big Ten Conference Championships. Black has been part of 34 winning basketball seasons both as a player and a coach. She began her playing career at Saint Joseph s University helping the Hawks make four straight NCAA Tournament appearances. After graduation in 988, she played professionally overseas in Tasmania (989-96). She played in the WNBA from 999-5 earning WNBA Defensive Player of the Year honors. Nicknamed The Pest Black is the only women s professional player to record a quadruple double with points, 4 rebounds, assists and steals in a game. Black s career record is 5-6, 6-3 in OVC games. LAST TIME OUT Eastern Illinois closed out their non-conference schedule at Cincinnati in their last game falling to UC 78-64. The Panthers fell behind early in the game as the Bearcats out-scored EIU -9 in the first quarter. UC took advantage of Panther errors as EIU accumulated 4 turnovers throughout the game resulting in 35 points for Cincinnati. Grace Lennox led EIU with 8 points while recording a season high eight assists. Allison Van Dyke and Halle Stull also finished the game in double-digits scoring 5 and points respectively. SCOUTING BELMONT The Bruins head to Charleston with an 8-5 record having won six of their last seven games. Belmont opens the conference season at EIU as the reigning OVC tournament champions after winning their first conference title last year. All five of last year s starters have returned for this season. Three Bruins currently average over points this year led by Kylee Smith who is averaging 4. points per game. Belmont leads the OVC in fewest turnovers and fouls per game while having the best rebounding margin in the conference. Her 8 season blocks ranks th in the NCAA. Despite the loss to Cincinnati the Panthers finished the game with their second-best shooting performance of the year shooting 5. percent from the floor. So far this season EIU has a field goal percentage of 4.3 percent which is the second best shooting percentage in the OVC. Southeast Missouri leads the conference with a season shooting percentage of 4.9. EIU s stellar shooting doesn t stop there as the Panthers are among the most accurate teams in the conference from the free throw line as well. The Panthers were 5-for- from the charity stripe at Cincinnati matching their season free throw percentage of 7.4 percent from the line. EIU s shooting percentage is third highest in the conference. Grace Lennox recorded a season high eight assists against Cincinnati to raise her season average to 4.3 assists per game. Lennox s assists per game average is fourth in the OVC. The junior needs only more assists to accumulate 3 assists in her career at EIU. As a team, the Panthers rank fifth in the conference averaging 4.3 assists per game. EIU only nabbed five steals in their last game against the Bearcats bringing their season steals per game average down to 8.8.
