Canberra College of Piping & Drumming 2014 Solo Competition Series www.canberracollegepipesdrums.org Introduction The Canberra College of Piping and Drumming will conduct a solo competition series to be held at the Burn s Club of Canberra, 8 Kett Street, Kambah, ACT, 2902. The competition series is not an Australian Pipe Band Association or the New South Wales Pipe Band Association sanctioned event. Competition Objectives The competition series objectives are to: encourage solo performance; expose selected individual s to the challenges of judging; build local camaraderie; and provide a local competition series to prepare competitors for participation in sanctioned State and National events. Key Dates Competition Dates and Timing The dates for the competitions are: Saturday the 24 th of May 2014; Saturday the 14 th of June 2014; and Saturday the 19 th of July 2014. Entry Closing Dates For organisational purposes entries must be received at least ten days prior to the competition, and not later than: midnight on Thursday the 15 th of May 2014; midnight on Thursday the 5 th of June 2014; and midnight on Thursday the 10 th of July 2014. Entries received after the entry closing date will be accepted at the sole discretion of the organising committee. Draw The draw for the day will be issued by email and posted to the Canberra College of Piping and Drumming website one week prior to the competition day. Subject to the number of entries, the competition will commence at 11:30 am and finish at 5:00 pm. The order of play will be lower grade to higher grade events, with some events being staggered. Piping and drumming events will occur concurrently. Page 1 of 9
General Conditions of Entry The general conditions of entry are as follows: 1. The organising committee reserves the right to reject any entry, curtail, postpone or cancel any event, or otherwise adjust the program as they deem necessary. 2. The organising committee will appoint judges. These judges may or may not be accredited judges with the Australian Pipe Band Association (APBA) or another official body. 3. Judges decisions are final. There is no mechanism for challenge or protest, and challenges or protests will not be entertained. 4. The competition is open to anyone, regardless of whether they play with a band or are registered with the APBA or another official body. 5. All competitors take part entirely at their own risk. 6. Apart from the practice chanter and drum pad events, all competitors must wear recognised or registered highland dress, including head-dress. 7. Competitors may only compete in one grade. 8. Competitors must register with competition marshals at least 30 minutes prior to their 1 st event. 9. Competitors must obey the instructions of competition marshals and any instructions from Burn s Club of Canberra officials, or risk disqualification. Piping Requirements The following events will be offered: Practice chanter; D grade solo piper, or equivalent; C grade solo piper, or equivalent; B grade solo piper, or equivalent; A grade solo piper, or equivalent Piobaireachd Urlar (D grade pipers only, and/or must not have played in an Restricted piobaireachd event before); Restricted Piobaireachd, (D and C grade pipers only, and/or must not have played in an Open piobaireachd event before); and Open Piobaireachd; The tune requirements by date are at Annex A. Pipers competing in C, B or A Grade events are required to tune their own pipes. The maximum tuning time is three minutes. Competitors who take longer will be disqualified. Drumming Requirements The following events will be offered for both side and tenor drumming: Learner drummer; D grade drummer, or equivalent; Page 2 of 9
C grade drummer, or equivalent; B grade drummer, or equivalent; A grade drummer, or equivalent The tune requirements by date are at Annex B. With the exception of A Grade drumming there is no requirement to be accompanied by a piper: however, piper accompaniment it is encouraged. Prizes No cash prizes will be awarded. Certificates will be awarded at the discretion of the organising committee for first, second and third place, providing there are five or more entries in the event. If there are only four entries, then only first and second place certificates will be awarded. If there are three or less entries, then only a first place certificate will be awarded. Aggregate certificates will be awarded for the series on the same basis. A certificate and aggregate certificate will be awarded for the best dressed competitor. Aggregate trophies will be awarded for the series. A first place in any event will attract 8 points: that is, a competitor could accrue 24 points on a day by winning both events in their grade, and a piobaireachd event. Second place in any event will attract 5 points. Third place in any event will attract 3 points. Fourth place in any event will attract 1 point. For pipers, in the event of a draw additional weight will be given to the A elements. If the aggregate is tied at the completion of the 19 th of July 2014 events then the organising committee reserves the right, at their sole discretion, to determine the aggregate winner. For drummers, in the event of a draw additional weight will be given to the events on the 19 th Of July 2014. The organising committee reserves the right, at their sole discretion, to award additional material prizes for any event. Entry This is a no cost event; accordingly there is no entry fee. Entry will only be accepted by email. Competitors may register for an individual event, or the entire series.
