About Us Page 15 New race, olympic marathoner to highlight By ANDREW WILSON Staff Writer ST. MARYS A new race and the opportunity to meet and greet an Olympic marathoner will highlight the 2017 Grand Lake Marathon. The 2017 Grand Lake Marathon will feature the full 26.2 mile marathon that is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon, full marathon relays, a 13.1 mile half marathon, half marathon relays, 5K race, kids marathon and a first-ever senior marathon. Similar to the kids marathon, the senior marathon is an incremental race in which seniors age 55 and older run a specified amount of miles in the days leading up to the race. They will then race 1.2 miles the day of the race. They get 25 miles in prior to the race and then do 1.2 miles at the finish, the conclusion, on that day, Race Director Ryan King said. They still get to go across the finish line, and they get a medal and they get a shirt and get the feeling of completing a marathon. But they won t have to do it all in one day, (that) is the idea. The kids marathon, which works the same way, will take place at the same time as the senior marathon. Beginning at 5 p.m. Friday at the Mercer County Fairgrounds, Olympian Jared Ward, who finished in sixth place at the 2016 Olympic Summer Games in Rio De Janeiro in Brazil and who is also a statistics professor at Brigham Young University, will hold an autograph session followed by a question-andanswer session. Another change from last year is the universal finishing line, as all races will end in Lakeshore Park in Celina. That s the big change for this year, is that all races will finish at Lakeshore Drive, which is different than it had been in the past, King said. In the past, we had two separate finish lines. The full marathon s course, however, will still be familiar to those who have run it in the past. We start down 127, King said. And then from 127, we head down 703 toward Montezuma. And then it goes off to Guadalupe (Road) and takes that clear to Tri Township (Road) and then Tri Township goes north to Greenville Road basically. Then (the route) comes across that feeder I think it s Feeder Road and up, not parallel to 364, but it s actually in the park, so 364 isn t closed. The biggie is (to) cross 703 all the way back to Celina and then come down. Westbound Ohio 703 on the north side of the lake will be closed on Saturday morning, but eastbound Ohio 703 will be open for residents to enter or to exit. The half marathon will begin at Memorial Park in St. Marys. It will travel the same route as in previous years but in reverse order. Teams of two, three or four can participate in the fullmarathon relay. The halfmarathon relay involves two team members, who each run 6.55 miles. The full-marathon relay will begin at 7:15 a.m. with the start of the full marathon in Celina. The halfmarathon relay will begin at 8:45 a.m. with the start of the half marathon in St. Marys. The 5K race, which begins and ends at Lakeshore Park in Celina and travels down the west bank of Grand Lake St. Marys, will begin at 8 a.m. Awards will be given out to the top three males and females in the full marathon and half marathon and top three in the following age groups: 18 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69, 70 plus and wheeled (push chair). Ohio 127 will be closed at 6:30 a.m. and won t open back up until approximately 9 a.m. Ohio 703 on the north side of the lake will be closed to westbound traffic and will only have traffic flowing east in the eastbound lane.
