The Redhawks head to Las Cruces, N.M., for a contest against the New Mexico State Aggies, the preseason favorite to win the Western Athletic Conference this season. Seattle U and New Mexico State played two close games against each other last season, but the Redhawks are hoping for a different ending after the Aggies took both games last year. THE KANSAS CITY GAME: The Kansas City Kangaroos were able to hit their shots throughout the night to establish a double-digit lead, and the efforts by Seattle University to come back fell short as the Redhawks lost to the Roos, 95-84, Saturday night in the Western Athletic Conference men s basketball opener for Seattle U at KeyArena. In the first three minutes of the second half, Kansas City scored nine unanswered points, five of them coming from Martez Harrison, to extend its advantage to 53-33. Down by 22 six minutes into the second half, the Redhawks rattled off seven straight points, punctuated by a Isiah Umipig three-pointer, to close their deficit to 15 at 64-49. After the Kangaroos extended their lead back to 20 at 69-49, the Redhawks used pressure defense to close the gap to six over a four-minute span, outscoring UMKC 18-4 thanks in part to six points apiece by Umipig and Emerson Murray. The Kangaroos did not allow Seattle U to get any closer by hitting their free throws, going 18-for-21 in the final four minutes to pull out the victory. Umipig once again led Seattle U with 24 points and four steals, while Clarence Trent finished with 12 points, five rebounds, and two steals. D Vonne Pickett Jr. came off the bench in the second half and collected 11 points and three assists, and Murray notched his first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, plus he dished out a teamhigh six assists and blocked a shot. WAC BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT: All-session tickets for the WAC Basketball Tournament March 12-15 at the Orleans Arena are now available at (206) 398-GOSU.

SCOUTING NEW MEXICO STATE: The Aggies come into Thursday s game with a 12-5 overall record, including a 6-1 record in home games so far this season. After losing its season opener, New Mexico State won seven straight games, lost the next four in a row to Colorado State, New Mexico, Gonzaga, and Arizona, and has now won five consecutive games, including an 84-62 victory at Grand Canyon last Saturday. The Aggies are scoring 77.0 points per game and giving up 67.9 points per game. As a team, New Mexico State is shooting 48.2 percent from the field, including 37.6 percent from behind the three-point line, and 69.6 percent from the free throw line. Daniel Mullings leads the team with 16.6 points and 1.8 steals per game, plus he has contributed 3.7 rebounds and 3.4 assists per contest. DK Eldridge is contributing 11.0 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. In the post, both Tshilidzi Nephawe and Sim Bhullar are averaging 9.8 points per game, with Bhullar (7.4 rpg) slightly ahead of Nephawe (7.1 rpg) in rebounding. KC Ross-Miller leads the Aggies with 3.8 assists per game to go along with a scoring average of 9.1 points per game. SERIES HISTORY: Seattle University and New Mexico State are meeting for the fifth time, with the Aggies holding a 3-1 series advantage. The first two contests took place during the 1970-71 season. On Dec. 28, 1970, in the first round of the Road Runner Classic in Las Cruces, N.M., New Mexico State defeated Seattle U, 91-78. In the rematch Feb. 20, 1971, at the old Seattle Coliseum, Seattle U was victorious over New Mexico State, 77-71. It would be 42 years before the two teams met up again, this time as conference rivals. On Jan. 10, 2013, New Mexico State pulled out an 83-82 victory over Seattle U in double overtime at KeyArena. Clarence Trent, Prince Obasi, and Louis Green each scored 15 points to lead the Redhawks, with both Trent (10 rebounds) and Obasi (11 rebounds) notching double-doubles. Tyrone Watson led all players with 26 points, followed by Bandja Sy with 23 points and Daniel Mullings with 19 points, seven rebounds, and seven steals. In the rematch Feb. 9, 2013, in Las Cruces, N.M., the Aggies held on for a 60-57 win over the Redhawks. Deshaun Sunderhaus led Seattle U with 14 points, while Mullings had 18 points and Sim Bhullar contributed 14 points, nine rebounds, and four blocked shots. COMING BACK: The Redhawks have rallied from halftime deficits three times this season. Seattle U came back from a 14-point deficit with 4:24 left in the second half against Cal State Fullerton on Nov. 13, from a five-point deficit with 6:26 remaining at Cal State Northridge Dec. 5, and from a seven-point deficit with 3:19 left in regulation against Norfolk State Dec. 19. HONORS FOR UMIPIG: Junior guard Isiah Umipig has made an immediate impact for Seattle University in the 2013-14 season after sitting out last season. The transfer from Cal State Fullerton has been named Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week twice by the conference office. He also received WAC Player of the Non-Conference Season honors from College Hoops Daily. Currently, Umipig leads the team and the league in scoring (20.1 ppg) and three-pointers made per game (3.21), plus he is second in the WAC in assists (4.14 apg) and fifth in the league in free throw percentage (.822). THE KEY TO VICTORY: For the fifth straight season, Seattle University men s basketball calls Elgin Baylor Court at KeyArena at Seattle Center home for its collegiate basketball games. Since returning to Seattle Center, the Redhawks are 36-28 (.563) at KeyArena, starting with an exciting 85-84 victory over Fresno State Nov. 19, 2009. Seattle U is 5-2 at KeyArena this season heading into the Jan. 16 game against Bakersfield. RETURN OF COACH S SHOW: The Cameron Dollar Coach s Show returns to 13 Coins and 770 AM KTTH Monday, Jan. 13, and will continue every Monday through the end of the season. The show is taped at 13 Coins from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. for broadcast on 770 AM KTTH later Monday night from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. All Seattle U basketball fans are invited to the Night Owl Lounge within the 13 Coins location at 125 Boren Avenue North to watch the live taping. PRESEASON PREDICTIONS: With the Western Athletic Conference schedule entering its second weekend, it is time for a reminder about the preseason polls conducted by both the coaches and the media in October. New Mexico State was picked as the clear favorite to win the WAC by both the coaches and media members voting, receiving every possible first place vote in both polls. Seattle U received the other first place vote in the coaches poll on its way to finishing second among the coaches, but fifth in the media poll. Bakersfield was picked to finish third in both polls, while Utah Valley finished fourth in the media poll and tied for fourth in the coaches poll with Idaho, who was picked to finish second by the media. Both polls placed Chicago State sixth and UT Pan American seventh. Grand Canyon (8th) finished ahead of Kansas City (9th) in the coaches poll, but the two WAC newcomers switched spots in the media poll. Both groups picked the same Preseason Player of the Year (Daniel Mullings, New Mexico State).

head coach cameron dollar (ucla 97) FIFTH season at seattle U/sixth season overall 56-77 (.421) at Seattle U/67-99 (.404) overall Cameron Dollar is in his fifth season as head coach at Seattle University. In just a short span of time, he has shown why many college basketball writers consider him one of the rising stars in the coaching industry. Dollar took a squad of several newcomers through the 2011-12 season, competing with powerhouse programs such as Virginia and Washington. The team got rolling midway through the season, winning nine of its last 12 contests, including eight in a row at KeyArena. Thanks in part to Dollar s coaching, Aaron Broussard established himself as one of the best players in program history, finishing his career 13th on the school s all-time scoring list. Cervante Burrell improved significantly during his three seasons playing under Dollar, and Eric Wallace made an important contribution to the team s success after transferring in from DePaul for his senior season. Seattle U picked up 11 victories during the 2010-11 season, including the team s second straight victory over Oregon State and a road victory at ACC school Virginia. The Redhawks also played a tight game at Pac-10 school Stanford and put up its best performance against Washington since starting the reclassification process in front of over 11,000 fans at KeyArena. With Dollar at the helm, Seattle U was invited to participate in the 2K Sports Classic Benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer, opening the season at the University of Maryland. The Redhawks were also chosen for the ESPN BracketBuster series of games, defeating Northern Illinois on the road. Using an up-tempo style with aggressive defense, Dollar led Seattle U to a 17-14 record in 2009-10, making the Redhawks the first team to post a winning record playing a full Division I schedule in its first year as a Division I counter. The team started to gain national recognition after a 77-74 victory at Utah, and then made history later in the year with a 99-48 win at Oregon State, the worst home loss ever for the Beavers. Dollar and his squad also defended Elgin Baylor Court at KeyArena during its first year of existance, finishing with a 10-3 record at home, including exciting victories over Fresno State, Weber State, and UC Irvine. Seattle U won eight of its last nine games, posting last-second road wins at Portland State and at San Jose State in the process. He served seven years as an asssistant coach at the University of Washington before coming to Seattle U. As the top assistant for Lorenzo Romar at Washington, he helped the Huskies win their first Pac-10 outright regular season championship since 1953 in the 2008-09 season. Washington advanced to the semifinals of the Pac-10 Tournament and to the second round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament. Prior to his arrival at UW, Dollar served three years as an assistant coach on Romar s Saint Louis University staff. He helped the Billikens to a three-year record of 51-44 (.537), including a 2000 Conference USA Tournament championship that secured the league s automatic NCAA berth. He became the nation s youngest head coach in 1998 when, at age 22, he took the reins of the Southern California College program in Costa Mesa, Calif. The Vanguards, who returned just six players from the previous season, posted an 11-22 record in Dollar s only season, but recorded wins over NAIA Top 25 teams Westmont and Azusa Pacific. As a player, Dollar lettered four seasons at UCLA before graduating in 1997. He has chosen to remain in Seattle, the site of the Bruins 1995 NCAA Championship victory. UCLA defeated Arkansas 89-78 at the Kingdome. A four-year letterman at UCLA from 1994-97, Dollar achieved national recognition in 1995 as a pivotal player in UCLA s NCAA championship season when he took over for injured starter Tyus Edney in the title game. In Dollar s final three collegiate seasons, the Bruins won the NCAA title and reached the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. Dollar averaged 5.0 points and 3.7 assists per game during his four-year career. He was recruited to UCLA by then-bruins assistant Lorenzo Romar and was reunited with his coach in 1999 when Romar added Dollar to his staff at Saint Louis University. Dollar is a native of Atlanta, where his father, Don, was the long-time coach at Clarkston High School and is now serving as one of his assistant coaches at Seattle U. Cameron and his wife, Maureen, live in Seattle. They have three children: Jalen (born April 26, 2005), Giselle (born Feb. 12, 2007), and Jason (born Dec. 23, 2008).
