The week long sessions are a complete hands-on approach to help students learn how to evaluate and master all types of standardized reading assessments. "With new academic demands on standardized assessments, Book and Brain Consulting, Inc. has a different and brand new way to address higherorder thinking. The answer: Training for both students and teachers. By modeling, using hands-on techniques, and introducing higher-level concepts at The Book and Brain University in fun and exciting ways, students have a jump start in understanding technical reading and evaluating evidence correctly. Teachers find this method simple to understand (and easy to translate into correct instruction in the classroom). Students are more motivated with an overall plan to attack: Book or Brain!" Lady Jackets Flight Ends By Billy Miller The Meridian Lady Jacket basketball team started with high expectations from their head coach Griffin Fields and has just come off a season that ended with a 24-9 record, District, Bi-District and Area championship. I was expecting a team that would compete for the district title and get to the regional tournament, Fields said. I also thought we could win 20 games. The Lady Jackets experienced moments in the regular season that helped them succeed in the postseason. I think our schedule proved to be instrumental in getting us ready for district play, Fields said. Our two wins against Goldthwaite and our district clinching win against Evant really showed we were mentally and physically tough. The girls made it all the way to the regional quarterfinal game, but could only watch their season slip away in the last minutes after Irion County overcame an 11 point deficit to beat the Lady Jackets. I was hoping we could just hold on, Fields said. We played great third quarter and it was hard to be on the sidelines, helpless to get the bleeding to stop. But Coach Fields doesn t blame the girls for the emotional loss. I don t think you can blame anyone, Fields said. They amped up the pressure and we didn t respond quickly enough to finish the job. Field s idea of a successful season is more than just having a winning record or late playoff runs. It s not leaving the season knowing we could have or should have done some things better, Fields said. Also, knowing the girls leave knowing the value of hard work and how that will achieve the goals they set. Like many athletic teams next year for MHS the Lady Jackets will be a young team, with only 2 seniors, and will be competing for a fourth straight playoff appearance. I think we will surprise some people who think we will be rebuilding. I think we are reloading instead Fields said. Our success will hinge on the work the girls put in this summer and in the fall. The girls are scheduled to start basketball workouts in early June. The lady Jacket head coach isn t planning on leaving anytime soon despite having fell short of the regional tournament. I have really enjoyed my time here, my kids like their school and my wife enjoys her job, Fields said. So, I am not actively looking to leave anytime soon. By: BM

Jacket Gazette Page 8 March 12, 2010 Track News Story By Billy Miller This year s track team is expected to be a good one and head track coach Bubba Vanzandt has set high expectations. We are going to take it one meet at a time with a District Championship being our #1 goal, Vanzandt said. Then we will extend outward from there. The track team has big shoes to fill after last year s team produced several successful state level competitors such as Torrence Allen and Dalton Strickland. Success breeds success, Vanzandt said. You hope the returners learned from the success they witnessed and experienced. Coach Vanzandt will have a lot of young talent to work with this year but younger doesn t mean better when compared to last year s team. The team is looking for its identity, Vanzandt said. Youthfulness is replacing experience. The Yellow Jacket track squad is no rookie when it comes to competing at the state level having gone two year s straight but it will take hard work to make it three. A dedication to the work ethic of the program will allow the athletes to compete at the state level for a third straight year, Vanzandt said. Track is not fun until you can understand the great rewards it can bring individually and as a team. Coach Vanzandt feels that there are a number of areas that the track team will experience success in. We have been a team built on speed the last couple of years, and we have junior Juan Galindo returning with some young sprinters to help, Vanzandt said. I feel this could be a team built on strength of field events such as the shot put and discus. The athletes can only do so much on their pathway to success. They need a coach to prepare and lead them in the right direction and the Meridian High School track team has that in Coach Vanzandt. I feel that I have a very good working relationship with the student athletes at M.H.S. I respect them and they respect me, Vanzandt said. It is all about the coaches being there for the kids, and the kids taking care of business. But Vanzandt, who deals mainly with sprinters and long distance runners, isn t the only coach that contributes to the success of the track team. There are other coaches who provide a good supporting cast. Coach Berg works with the throwers, Coach Doughty and Coach Lee with the different jumpers, Coach Hastings with Pole vault, and Coach Finstad with the hurdlers, Vanzandt said. The Jackets will be preparing over the next month for the District meet in Meridian on April 8. BAND NEWS THe Meridian High School Band went to Concert and Sight-Reading contest on March 4th, and got a "2" and a "3. They have been working hard all year and I am proud of them said Mr. Elkins

Jacket Gazette Page 3 May 23, 2010 A Future to Remember By: Steven McElyea Meridian football season 10 is a mere five months away and there is work to be done to fill up the Jacket squad. I ve got high expectations, said fullback, Ren Rieke, who started in his first year on the varsity squad as a sophomore. We will make playoffs easily, and we will have a strong team. Looking at the opponents, we should be district champs Confidence is a very important quality that every team needs. Varsity is expecting to be getting some talent from the JV squad that went 8-2 in the 2009 season. Consisting mostly of sophomores, the junior varsity was very successful using Head Coach Todd Doughty s running offense. Some key players who are expected to move up to varsity next year include Zane Payne, Josh Eoff, Trinton Jones, Jeremy Seay, Michael Rasberry, Colton Bowers, and T.J. Allen. We see each other as brothers and we all stick together. We've been playing for five years and we have a very strong chemistry, said Rasberry There are a lot of sophomores. They have a strong bond, one that you can t break even if you tried real hard, said junior Cody Smith. That s what we need, With the loss of 1st team academic all state quarterback, Joe Barrett Winkler; the question is on a lot of peoples mind is Who will be the varsity quarterback? The quarterback spot is up in the air, but I would like to see Justin Guerrero at the helm, said varsity tackle, Billy Miller. If Justin plays, we want him, said Rasberry. He s a good athlete and he has an arm. He is athletic smart. Guerrero, also a sophomore, hasn t played high school football, but if he does play his expectations are very high. Quarterback is a tough position, said Guerrero. My brother played, and his shoes will be hard to fill, but I feel like I can handle the pressure In the end, the quarterback decision lies with Head Coach, Todd Doughty. The line for the 2010 Jackets will change since two starters have graduated. Now the problem is finding someone to fill the gap. I think Austin Crawford can fill in for one of the seniors, but we need to have more people working hard in offseason to find the next lineman, said junior lineman Jesus Piñón. It takes commitment to go through the pain, sweat, and brutal heat. You have to remember it will all pay off in the future like it has for me. Piñón has been a starting center during his sophomore year then a guard his junior year. Although the team looks forward to a great 2010 season, the loss of the seniors will be a tough transition. I got attached to most of the seniors, said Rieke, because they were a part of my first year on varsity, I feel with the loss of teammates is hard to accept because we all fought our battles together, Said Miller. MHS does return of 10 starters from the 2009 season. When you play as a team you feel the connection as a family as if they were brothers, said Piñón. We play with the motto I got your back, you got mine Shattered Dreams Educating Young People on the Impact of Drinking and Driving Traffic crashes, many of which involve alcohol and other drugs, are a leading cause of death and serious injury for youth 15 to 19 years of age. Communities around the state are often faced with these tragedies, and many Texas high schools are turning to Shattered Dreams, a youth led community collaborative program, to prevent more fatalities. Morgan Barker and Jennifer Heartsill applied for grants to help pay some of the cost associated with hosting a Shattered Dreams program. TABC agents are actively involved in Shattered Dreams programs and offer expertise in alcoholic beverage laws and assist with the on-site crash scene, retreat and parent education workshops. Morgan and Jennifer planned and coordinated the event which culminated into the mock accident on Wednesday, May 12th.

Jacket Gazette Page 8 May 23, 2010 Meridian Boys Golf Falls Short of State Finals By: Steven McElyea It seems like yesterday that the boys golf team missed the state tournament by one stroke. On April 19th and 20th at regionals in Abilene, Texas, the boys fell 14 strokes short of advancing to the state contest. It s not the end of career for golf, said senior Kevin Anderson, who qualified for state as an individual, shooting his career best for Meridian (72-77). I love golf, and when I go to state, I am bringing my teammates, I m excited that we made it to regional s four years in a row and we shot better than last year, said senior Cheyne Guinn. The other teams that beat us were good, no doubt about it. A n d e r s o n, Guinn, and senior Joe Winkler have played four whole years together and Abilene would be there last time to play as Yellow Jackets. Kevin Anderson Swings at State Golf We had a great run, and we played the best we ever played in our four years of golf, said senior Joe Barrett Winkler. I m sad that we couldn t advance but its not going to haunt me. It s very hard to accept when you came so close every time but you can t let these things bring you down, said Winkler. I feel that the three of us have certainly got a connection when it comes to golf Freshmen Ryan Niewenhuis and Jordan Felan will be back, but the golf team will be looking for at least three more players for next year. I wish the golf team good luck when we leave, said Guinn. I hope they can keep our regional streak going, The boys golf team is the only team in history to win a state championship for Meridian, and that was in 1997. I hope one day in the near future our underclassmen will make us proud and get a state championship for us, said Anderson. Meridian deserves one.
