Don t want to break the bank on such a trip? Where do you go for access to great fishing? Where to stay while there? a DIY fishing trip to the trout waters of New Mexico and Colorado. Page 2 The Fly Line Newsletter Format Change This issue s fly of the month will not coincide with the fly that we are tying at Bass Pro Shops this month. It is a fly of my choosing, but one that is appropriate for this time of year. Starting with the September issue of The Fly Line, the featured Fly of the Month will be the fly that we tied at the previous month s Bass Pro Shops workshop. For instance, this month Tom Bullock will be tying a soft hackle fly and showing us a short-cut way to tie it. This fly and short-cut will be featured in next month s issue. Why the change? I knew you d ask. Sometimes the fly featured in The Fly Line doesn t match up with what is tied at the workshop. Several reason can cause this to happen. Maybe the tier has to cancel for some reason- not a complaint but sometimes things happen. Also, there can be different versions of a fly and the one featured doesn t match the one tied. Now for the main reason for the change. What ends up in the next newsletter is the exact version that was previously tied. So after seeing it tied and tying one yourself with necessary direction, you can get a recap for when you try to tie at home. Several times over the years this would have helped me. I hope you like the format change as I think it will be beneficial. 2016 NLFF Executive Board President Steve Oliver 318-349-6411 sdoliver012@gmail.com Treasurer Tom Bullock 318-393-7729 twbullock@aol.com Secretary TBD A/V & Technical Steve Oliver 318-349-6411 sdoliver012@gmail.com Conservation Director Chris Pierce 318-469-0854 cpierce213@hotmail.com Fly Tying Director Jamie Franklin 318-707-5959 tjfranklin301@yahoo.com Membership Director Steve Oliver 318-470-2646 nlffclub@gmail.com Newsletter Editor Steve Oliver 318-349-6411 nlffclub@gmail.com Programs Director Scott Irwin 318-469-0854 scottpeggy2004@gmail.com Social Media Director Frank Harmon 318-470-2646 qualey99@mac.com Safety Director Judy Thomas 318-560-4888 jwt1216@bellsouth.net Webmaster Steve Oliver 318-349-6411 nlffclub@gmail.com Member at Large Thomas (Bud) Bethea 318-464-5104 thomasbethea@hotmail.com Member at Large Scott Irwin 318-469-0854 scottpeggy2004@gmail.com Member at Large Brett Rowell 318-207-6097 brett@brownbuilders.com Member at Large Chris Pierce 318-347-0494 cpierce213@hotmail.com Member at Large Rex White 318-294-7027 rexflyfish@reagan.com

Page 4 Fly of the Month - Soft Hackle Fly The Fly Line by Tom Bullock At the NLFF s Fly Tying Session a t Bass Pro, Tom Bullock demonstrated how to tie Soft Hackle Fly with a new twist. The new method involved a new way of attaching the Partridge feather to the collar of the wet fly. The remainder of the wet fly, or soft hackled Fly, was tied per the teaching of James Leisenring (1878-1951). Leisenring is considered by many to be the American Skaues, a well known European author and fly fisher of the early 1900 s Leisenring was said to be the most advanced fly fisher and fly tier of the new world during his life. Leisenring deviated from the traditional North Country Spiders of the UK in that he tied heavily dubbed wet flies usually with a game bird flank feather as a tail. He also used the traditional partridge feather as a collar on most of his flies. Leisenring invented what is now known as the Leisenring Lift, or induced lift, to bring fish up from the bottom of the water to catch what appears to be escaping pray. Leisenring was one of the first to prepare a Dubbing Loop to be used to dub his flies. There was a larger than normal turnout at Bass Pro. All attendees tied very nice flies which should be pleasing to the fish.

Box 29531 Shreveport, LA 71149 email: nlffclub@gmail.com We re on the Web! www.northlaflyfishers.org Founded in 1984 Serving the Ark-La-Tex for over 30 years It is the charge of the North Louisiana Fly Fishers to afford the general public and our members in particular, a better understanding of Fly Fishing, Fly Tying, and Rod Building. We wish to perpetuate the sport as a most pleasurable and exciting fishing method and provide education, instruction and the opportunities for relaxation to the membership. The North Louisiana Fly Fishers (NLFF) Club serves the Ark-La-Tex area surrounding Shreveport. As the closest cold water fishery, we consider the Little Missouri (Little Mo) River near Murfreesboro, AR our home waters. We also fish the local rivers and lakes. We even have a growing group of kayak fishermen that, as well as the local rivers and lakes, will fish the gulf coast marshes for some saltwater action! We meet the second Tuesday of every month at the Red River Wildlife Refugee (150 Eagle Bend Point, Bossier City, LA). Meeting starts at 7pm but come about 6pm to visit, tie flies and practice casting when the weather permits. See you there!
