Secretariat of the Pacific Community, 1998 The Secretariat of the Pacific Community authorises the reproduction of this material, whole or in part, provided appropriate acknowledgment is given. Original edition: English Pacific Community is the new name of the South Pacific Commission (SPC). The new name became official on 6 February 1998, in commemoration of the 51st anniversary of the 1947 Canberra Agreement which originally established the SPC. The change of name does not alter the established SPC acronyms, but their meanings are modified. Pacific Community applies to the total organisation, i.e. the member governments, the Conference, the CRGA and the Secretariat. Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) refers to those who provide the service to members of the Community. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Preparation of this manual benefited from the inputs of several current and former SPC Fisheries Programme staff, including Peter Watt, Steve Beverly, Paul Mead, Paxton Wellington, Peter Cusack, Aymeric Desurmont, Marie-Ange Roberts, Satalaka Petaia and Julian Dashwood. The authors are grateful for their contributions. Preparation of this volume was kindly funded by a grant from the Government of Taiwan/ ROC. UNITS, CONVERSIONS AND ABBREVIATIONS Metric units are used throughout this document except in the case of distance at sea, where nautical miles (nm), the standard international measure, are used. A nautical mile is equivalent to one minute (one-sixtieth of a degree) of latitude. Technically the standard nautical mile is 6,080 feet (1,852 m). Conversions between metric and imperial units are as follows: 1 millimetre (1 mm) = 0.039 inch 1 inch = 25.38 mm 1 centimetre (1 cm) = 0.393 inch 1 inch = 2.54 cm 1 metre (1 m) = 3.281 feet 1 foot = 0.305 m 1 metre (1 m) = 0.546 fathoms 1 fathom = 1.83 m Some manufacturers use nominal equivalents in converting between metric and standard US measures. The nominal equivalents of the metric measures given in this document are as follows: 5 mm = 3/16 inch 16 mm = 5/8 inch 6 mm = 1/4 inch 19 mm = 3/4 inch 8 mm = 5/16 inch 22 mm = 7/8 inch 10 mm = 3/8 inch 25 mm = 1 inch 12 mm = 1/2 inch 50 mm = 2 inch 14 mm = 9/16 inch 100 mm = 4 inch Apart from the units of measure noted above, other abbreviations used regularly in this document include the following: dia.
