SKI BREEZE www.longbeachskiclub.org July 2014 Kris Kolumn Volume: 75, Issue 14ulp El Nino, master of the Pacific, we beacon thee to not pacify the waters, rather make them churn and burn with storms that bring snows, rains, and more snows to our beloved mountains, water to our streams and mountain lakes, so that we may frolic and otherwise recreate in the glories of this land. (i.e., ski a heck of a lot?) Enuf romantic thinking? Please get your dues in and ask your neighbors and best friends to do the same. I am asking for your investment in Your Club, the common thread of so many couples and friendships over the decades. Our Club continues to gather new members, but we haven t turned the corner! Please note that your dues help to circulate this outstanding Pulitzer material (besides my article) and organize ski weekends, well-attended social events, and the week long ski trip! As June Gloom tries to make up its mind for whether its weather will stay with us a few more days, the next ski season inches towards us with a potential promise for an outstanding El Nino (biggest story of the year?). Even the biggest El Nino won t solve the drought, but it could surely make us all happy to be in the mountains. Meanwhile, our new Board Members, Ziba (treasurer, accountant in her real life) and Sarah (Secretary, past member of other volunteer boards) are slowly learning our ways. I like these ladies! My wife likes that there are at least two other ladies on the Board maybe next year s Board will have more! Your banged-up president continues to mend. Slowly. Almost slow enough to watch the grass grow during a drought. Word comes in about ailments of our members and former members, and we hope they heal quickly! Many kudos to all of you Nightingales! Let s hope that we can all ski this Fall! Thankfully, I ve healed well enough to take David Pattison s scurvy crew (they did all the work) on their long-awaited cruise around the Harbor, giving them a good taste of a sailor s food and drink, as well as some fast times on the water. They had won this prize at last Fall s Open House. As excited as David was at the end of the day, you d think he has already asked George to help him find a boat! On the party side of life, my hat goes off to the Gibsons (Craig & Ziba) for hosting the recent Club BBQ in their humble, ah, mansion, and to Lance for making this happen! I hope to see y all at Your General Meeting on July 2, and the Belmont Brewery on July 19. Be safe while celebrating the 4th! Cheers!

SKI BREEZE May July 2014 Volume: 75, Issue 14 12 Craig s Crag... Racing & Membership By Craig Gibson It was a pleasure hosting the LBSC BBQ on Saturday, June 21. Lance did a terrific job as chef, commandeering two grills and preparing the corn and beans. It was a special day for Ziba and myself as it was the first party we hosted in our new home. It also happened to the summer solstice which means daylight hours are now getting shorter and we are slowly on our way to winter. As of this writing, race dates are still tentative, but by the next Ski Breeze, they should be set. In case you didn t know, LBSC membership spans from June 1 until May 31; so, if you haven t renewed your membership, please do so. Applications are included in this newsletter. Please take a moment to print it out, fill it out and mail it to the address on the form. Get that application in and join the fun! SKI BREEZE May July 2014 Volume: 75, Issue 14 12 Get loose with Lance By Lance Liebl June s barbecue at the Craig and Ziba Gibson home was a great event with over 25 LBSC members attending. Everyone brought either appetizers or great desserts. I personally made a pot of pork and beans that was improved with many special ingredients that will be my secret recipe. The club provided steamed corn, watermelon, and ice cream with toppings and nuts. Craig and Ziba took turns giving tours of their new home which could be qualified for Home s and Garden magazine. For July we will be meeting at the Belmont Brewery near the Belmont Veterans Pier. Arrangements have been made for special seating for 20. Time of event will be July 19 at 4:00 pm. August 16th we will have our final barbecue at Dave Lopez s home in Lakewood. September 20th we will have wine tasting in a new location for LBSC. Watch for flyers for details. Now, everyone can fill their calendars. 5

SKI BREEZE May July 2014 Volume: 75, Issue 14 12 Ziba s Gold By Ziba Gibson Hi. My name is Ziba Gibson. I joined the club about a month ago and am delighted to be a member. When word got out that I was an accountant, I was asked to be the club s treasurer. I have agreed, so here I am. Cherri Gregg, our past treasurer, has handed over the accounting material and I am pleased to see how well things are organized. As soon as I can overcome some software issues, I will be ready to get started. As some of you may know, I had a serious collision skiing several years ago and have been terrified of returning to the slopes. This spring my husband Craig took me to June Mountain on an uncrowded weekday and we skied some easy terrain. I loved it so much that I bought a Mammoth season pass that very same day. If you like skiing green and blue runs, please let me know. I need ski buddies for next season. Secretary Sarah Pool I just completed serving a two-year term on the Assistance League of San Pedro/South Bay Executive Board, so I come well prepared to serve as secretary for the Long Beach Ski Club. I have enjoyed being a member of the club for almost 25 years, attending trips, events, activities, and parties, so I think it is time to give back to the club. I am pleased and honored to accept the position of secretary to the board and I m looking forward to a fun-filled year! received a strike. Congratulations Steve! Members are welcome to make suggestions as to how the club will best serve you! Please send email to either Kris- flaigrant@yahoo.com, or Lance - lance.liebl123@gmail.com or Craig - craiggibson@earthlink. net, your board memebers in action! 6
