WELCOME The National Basketball Association (NBA) would like to thank you for participating in the Inaugural NBA FIT/ WNBA FIT Challenge, sponsored by SINGULAIR (montelukast sodium). The NBA s national fitness & wellness program provides boys and girls, 14 years of age & under, the opportunity to compete in a national event designed to challenge their fitness level in a fun and competitive environment. The NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge, sponsored by SINGULAIR, is an easily administered program in which boys and girls compete separately in three (3) levels of competition, with thirty-two (32) participants advancing to NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge Regional Competitions and sixteen (16) participants advancing to the NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge National Finals at NBA All-Star 2010 in Dallas, Texas, February 12-14. To educate your participants more about our sponsor, encourage them to pick up a brochure at the registration desk. *You are encouraged to use the above welcome to address your participants prior to competition. PROGRAM GOALS To provide youngsters across the country with an opportunity to participate, free of charge, in an exciting fitness competition; to provide youth organizations with an easily administered program that communicates efficiently and effectively, supplies consistent and timely information, and delivers all materials on schedule in an effort to provide the highest quality program of its kind. The NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge, sponsored by SINGULAIR, is intended to encourage active youth participation and emphasize the FUN element of fitness and physical activity. Since there is no registration fee for this program, every boy and girl, 14 years of age & under, will have a chance to compete while emphasizing the importance and value of a physically active lifestyle. 2

Participants PROGRAM OVERVIEW All participants must have a parent or guardian fill out a registration/waiver form obtained from local NBA FIT/ WNBA FIT Challenge host locations. Boys and girls, 14 years of age & under, must provide a copy of a valid birth certificate or other proof of identification for age verification. Participants may compete in more than one (1) Local Competition. Age Groups The four (4) age groups are: 8 & under, 9-10, 11-12, and 13-14, with boys and girls competing separately (age is determined as of February 12, 2010). See age verification chart below. Age Verification Chart To determine the appropriate age group for each participant, refer to the chart below. Participants must be born between the dates shown to be eligible to participate in their respective age group. Age classifications are based upon the participant s age as of February 12, 2010. Age Groups Born Between Ages 8 & under February 13, 2001 or later Ages 9-10 February 13, 1999 to February 12, 2001 Ages 11-12 February 13, 1997 to February 12, 1999 Ages 13-14 February 13, 1995 to February 12, 1997 Structure The NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge, sponsored by SINGULAIR, is structured in geographic regions in and around 35 NBA/WNBA & NBA D-League team markets. The regions encompass neighboring states, when necessary, to ensure the availability of the program to participants within 75 miles of the selected markets. Participants have the opportunity to advance through three (3) levels of competition: Local Competitions, NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge Regional Competitions and the NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge National Finals at NBA All-Star 2010 in Dallas, Texas. LEVELS OF COMPETITION Local Competition September 12, 2009 November 15, 2009 All host organizations may conduct multiple Local Competitions. Participants may compete in more than one (1) Local Competition. It is recommended that a Local Competition consist of a minimum of 100 participants. It is required that Local Competitions be held from September 12, 2009, to November 15, 2009. IMPORTANT NOTE: In order to have a participant advance to the subsequent levels of competition, your Local Competition must be registered with, and all registration/waiver forms must be on file at the NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge Headquarters in order to deem your Local Competition official. NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge Regional Competition November 15, 2009 to January 17, 2010 NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge Regional Competitions will be hosted in 35 select markets. 3

NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge National Finals February 12 - February 14, 2010 The NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge National Finals conclude at NBA All-Star 2010 in Dallas, Texas. The top sixteen (16) Regional Competition Champions (two (2) per age and gender group) will compete at the NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge National Finals. COMPETITION RULES Eligibility The competition is FREE for all participants All boys and girls, 14 years of age & under, are eligible to participate - See age verification chart and age groups on page 3 All participants must provide a copy of a valid birth certificate or other proof of identification for age verification - Providing a false/incorrect birth certificate will result in automatic disqualification All participants must submit a signed registration/waiver form to the Local Administrator Participants may compete in more than one (1) Local Competition Tiebreakers If a tie for 1st Place occurs at ANY level of competition, each participant involved in the tie should have their jump-rope scores compared. The participant with the higher jump-rope score will be named Champion. If a tie still exists, the participant with the higher speed-revolution score should be named Champion. If a tie still exists, the participant with the higher wall-pass score should be named Champion. Important Notes The NBA, SINGULAIR, LEJ & Associates, Inc., regional and local coordinators/organizers of the NBA FIT/ WNBA FIT Challenge, sponsored by SINGULAIR, reserve the right to make rulings and recommendations regarding the competition determined to be in the best interest of the program. All rulings and recommendations are final In the event of cancellations, rescheduling will be determined by NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge Officials at the competition site - At the Local Level, the League Director/Local Administrator will be the determining official Participation in the NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge, sponsored by SINGULAIR, authorizes the NBA, SINGULAIR, and other NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Associate Sponsors to use a participant s name and likeness for promotional use for the NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge program without compensation The Official Registration/Waiver Form includes more detailed information on eligibility, participation, etc. 4

AWARDS & ADVANCEMENT The NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge, sponsored by SINGULAIR, consists of three (3) levels of competition: NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge Local Competitions, NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge Regional Competitions and the NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge National Finals. Below is a list of who receives awards and who has the opportunity to advance to the next level of competition. NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge Local Competition Each Local Administrator will declare a Champion in each age and gender group. Since there are eight (8) different competition groups, there will be eight (8) 1st Place Champions (4 male and 4 female) per Local Competition. Your local first place champions in each age and gender group qualify, but do not automatically advance to the NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge Regional Competition. THE 1st PLACE LOCAL CHAMPIONS DO NOT AUTOMATICALLY ADVANCE TO THE REGIONAL COMPETITION. Your Local Champions scores must first be compared with the other Local Champions in your specific team market in order to determine the top four (4) finishers in each age and gender group advancing to the NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge Regional Competition. Your Local Champions will be notified by the NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge Headquarters if they advance. Remember, at the Local Level, a participant MUST be the 1st Place Local Champion in his/her age and gender group in order to qualify to advance to the NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge Regional Competition. IMPORTANT NOTE: All registration/waiver forms must be on file at the NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge Headquarters to advance the qualifying participants to the subsequent levels of competition. NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge Regional Competition All scores are reset to zero (0). All participants will receive the following: NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge T-Shirt NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge Regional Competition Award The participants that qualify to advance to the NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge National Finals in each of the age and gender groups are the Regional Competition Champions. THE REGIONAL COMPETITION CHAMPIONS DO NOT AUTOMATICALLY ADVANCE TO THE NBA/WNBA FIT CHALLENGE NATIONAL FINALS. All Regional Competition Champions will have their scores compared nationally with the other thirty-four (34) NBA/WNBA/D-League team market NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge Regional Competition Champions to determine the top two (2) finishers in each age and gender group advancing to the NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge National Finals. All NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge Regional Competition Champions will be notified by the NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge Headquarters as to their advancement. NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge National Finals The 2010 NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge National Finals will be held at NBA All-Star 2010 in Dallas, Texas, February 12 14. 5

LOCAL COMPETITION ADMINISTRATOR RESPONSIBILITIES Sign-Up Process (at least four (4) weeks prior to competition) Register your Local Competition with the NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge Headquarters Determine date, time, and location of competition Receive Local Competition Administrative Kit from the NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge Headquarters Prior to Competition (at least two (2) weeks prior to competition) Secure a gym (full basketball court recommended) to host competition Write competition date, time, and location on promotional posters (provided in Administrative Kit) and display in facility Recruit necessary staff and volunteers - Suggested staffing includes: One (1) registration coordinator, One (1) line controller, One (1) on-court director/timer/line sprint station staffer, Four (4) station staffers Event Day Register all participants - Collect birth certificates/proof of age and check for completed registration/waiver forms for all participants Return registration/waiver form to each participant as this will also serve as his/her official scoresheet Instruct each participant to hold on to his/her registration/waiver form/scoresheet and provide to station staffers at time of competition Conduct competition - Please Note: In the event of a cancellation, please reschedule the competition and communicate updated competition details to all participants and to the NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge Headquarters Collect and calculate each participant s scoresheet (on bottom of each registration/waiver form) Complete Results Sheet (pg. 14) - Make copies of Results Sheet for your records Award participant ribbons and announce the following script to address those awarded: Congratulations! All 1st Place Champions in each age and gender group are now eligible to advance to the NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge Regional Competition. Remember, your score must be compared with the other Local Competition Champions in our market and the top four (4) finishers in each age and gender group will advance to the NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge Regional Competition. The NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge Headquarters will contact 1st Place Champions if you advance. Once again, congratulations! NBA FIT/WNBA FIT CHALLENGE, sponsored by SINGULAIR Objective To create a national competition that challenges participants fitness level in a fun and competitive environment. Necessary Equipment One (1) Half-Court Basketball Court Two (2) Basketballs 27.5 (provided) NOTE: Participants may use their own basketball. If a participant brings his/her own basketball, it must be made available to all others competing Two (2) NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Jump Ropes 7 & 8 lengths (provided) NOTE: Participants may use their own jump rope. If a participant brings his/her own jump rope, it must be made available to all others competing Three (3) NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Bean Bags (provided) Twenty-four (24) NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Ribbons (8-1st Place, 8-2nd Place, 8-3rd Place) One (1) 25 roll of logo tape for wall pass, line sprint & defensive shuffle stations (provided) One (1) Digital Stopwatch (provided) One (1) Whistle Calculator Tape Measure (20 minimum) Writing Utensil NOTE: One (1) set of equipment has been provided in the Administrative Kit for setup of one (1) competition on one (1) half-court basketball court. NOTE: Experience has shown that the above equipment listed is the minimum necessary to conduct a successful competition. It is important to have additional equipment in case of failures. Competition Execution The NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge consists of a series of five (5) exercise stations. Participants compete individually against the stopwatch. Each participant is timed at each of the five (5) exercise stations for thirty (:30) seconds per station. Their score is recorded on their scoresheet by each station staffer prior to rotating to the next station. Five (5) participants compete at five (5) stations at the same time (Every station should be occupied by a competitor). NOTE: Please refer to page 11 for a suggested event layout and staffing diagram. NOTE: Research has shown that it will take each participant less than three (3) minutes to complete the NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge competition. Considering this time allotment, allow for thirty (30) minutes to run thirty (30) participants on a half-court. 7

LOCAL COMPETITION ADMINISTRATOR RESPONSIBILITIES Station 1: Line Sprints Station Setup: Measure 20 from the half-court line toward the free-throw line. Use a piece of logo tape (provided) to mark the end of the running segment near the free-throw line. Station Procedure: Participant runs a distance of 20 Participant starts at half-court behind the half-court line Participant must run and touch the tape line with his/her hand, then return to touch the half-court line a point is awarded for each line that is touched with the hand Participant runs back and forth, touching each line with the hand as many times as possible in the thirty (:30) second time period A point should not be awarded for a line that isn t touched with the hand incomplete running segments should not be counted Point Value: 1 segment = 2 points LINE SPRINT SETUP DIAGRAM Start Half Court Line 20 feet (Director/Timer) Line Sprint Station Tape Line Station 2: Jump Rope (7 & 8 lengths provided) Station Setup: Choose an open space in the gym away from any obstacles Station Procedure: Participant starts with jump rope in both hands with rope resting on ground behind participant s heels On the whistle, participant should begin jumping the rope 8

Single or double hops over the rope are permitted The station staffer should count a jump-rope revolution each time the rope passes clearly under the participant s feet This procedure is repeated as many times as possible in the thirty (:30) second time period Jumps do not need to be consecutive to count A point should not be awarded if the rope gets caught on the participant s feet Point Value: 1 complete revolution = 1 point Station 3: Speed Revolution (using the provided 27.5 basketball) Station Setup: Choose an open space in the gym away from any obstacles Station Procedure: Participant starts with both hands on basketball and ball positioned at the participant s navel On the whistle, participant should begin moving the basketball around his/her waist as quickly as possible The station staffer should count a revolution each time the participant passes the ball across his/her navel This procedure is repeated as many times as possible in the thirty (:30) second time period If participant loses control and drops the basketball, he/she should resume starting at his/her navel A point should not be awarded for a partial revolution of the ball around the body Point Value: 1 complete revolution = 2 points Station 4: Wall Pass (using the provided logo tape and 27.5 basketball) Station Setup: Measure 10 from the wall and use a piece of the logo tape (provided) to mark the passing line on the floor. From the floor, measure 3 up the wall and use a piece of the logo tape to mark the passing line on the wall. Station Procedure: Participant starts with basketball in hand and both feet behind the passing line On the whistle, participant should perform a chest pass toward the wall aiming above the logo tape line on the wall The station staffer should count a pass each time both feet are behind the line and each time the ball strikes the wall on or above the tape line This procedure is repeated as many times as possible in the thirty (:30) second time period A point should not be awarded if the participant s foot is in front of the line and/or if the ball strikes the wall below the tape line Point Value: 1 pass = 2 points 9

A bean bag should be placed on both the left and right block. Logo tape (provided) can be used to create a block if your basketball court does not have a block. SUGGESTED EVENT FLOW PROCEDURE 1. The competition should start with three (3) participants at each station - a total of fifteen (15) kids should be on the competition floor 2. The station staffer should clearly explain the station exercise and outline the scoring rules for the exercise station to all three (3) participants at his/her station 3. Each participant competes individually against the stopwatch 4. After all station staffers have explained their station exercise, the timer/director/line sprint station staffer blows the whistle and starts the stopwatch - One (1) participant will be competing at each of the five (5) different exercise stations at the same time 5. At the end of the thirty (:30) seconds, the timer/director/line sprint station staffer blows his/her whistle and each station staffer marks the participant s score on the participant s scoresheet 6. Repeat Steps 4 & 5 as the second participant in the group performs the exercise 7. Repeat Steps 4 & 5 as the third participant in the group performs the exercise NOTE: After all three (3) participants have performed the same exercise, they rotate as a group to the next exercise station and Steps 2-7 are repeated Station staffers do not rotate After each participant completes the entire circuit of exercise stations, the registration staffer should collect his/her scoresheet The top scores for each age & gender group should be entered into the NBA FIT/WNBA FIT Challenge Local Competition Results Sheet (pg. 14) and immediately faxed to (770) 641-7596 to make your competition official STAFF RESPONSIBILITIES * ALL procedures need to remain consistent with each participant * Station staffers do not rotate between stations * ALL scoring rulings made by a station staffer are FINAL DIRECTOR/TIMER/LINE SPRINT STAFFER (with whistle and provided stopwatch): Stand in the midcourt circle in clear view of all stations (see Staffing Diagram, pg. 11) Ensure all station staffers have explained their exercise station and participant #1 is ready to perform the exercise Blow your whistle and start the stopwatch Blow the whistle again to mark the end of the thirty (:30) second exercise Repeat the above steps for participant #2 Repeat the above steps for participant #3 After the third participant in each group finishes, direct the five (5) groups to rotate to the next station Note: Research has shown the Director/Timer should also serve as the Line Sprint station staffer STATION STAFFER (4 station staffers - with writing utensil): Clearly explain the rules & requirements of your specific exercise station Be sure to explain what counts as an official attempt and what does not count Record the repetitions of each specific exercise in the appropriate box on the participant s scoresheet and return completed scoresheet to participant STARTER/LINE CONTROLLER: Assign kids to groups of three (3) Add five (5) new groups (15 kids total) to the exercise floor after each full rotation Maintain an orderly line of participants 12
