The Lady Mavs opened the season with a 99-63 win over Jackson State on Saturday to push its streak to 5 in a row in home openers and 3 season openers. Claire Chastain shined in her debut with 16 points (5-8 FG, 3-3 3p). Kelsey Johnson scored a career-high 12 points (5-6 FG) and Brooke Alexander scored 10 (4-8 FG, 2-5 3p). Passing was the theme in the win as Katie Ferrell and Terryn Milton each had 7 assists, UTA tallied 26 assists overall. Cierra Johnson returned to the court after missing all but 3 games last season, she picked up 4 steals and added 9 points. Johnson is 86 points away from becoming the 19th member of the UTA, 1,000-point club. Johnson needs just 3 steals to move into 14th in Sun Belt steals history as she enters with 254 in her career. She is 31 away from the UTA all-time record. The 99 points in the opener were the most in program history to open a season and 6th most points scored all-time. UTA has had 5 games over the 100-point mark, last in 1998. The 33 points in the third are tied for most in a quarter, while the 58 points in the second half were the most in a half all-time. Despite 3 scoring in double figures for UTA last year vs. the Razorbacks, a big second quarter from the Razorbacks pulled Arkansas away with a 23-12 advantage in the frame on the way to a 91-57 final. Arkansas also closed the 4th with a 28-11 advantage. Laurynn McGowen leads returners with 10 points in the contest. Arkansas show 46.2 percent from the field to UTA s 40.7. UTA is seeking its first win over a Power 5 foe since 2004 vs. Kansas. THE RETURN OF CIERRA JOHNSON Cierra Johnson returns to the Lady Mavericks after a medical redshirt last year. Johnson was injured during the first half of UTA s third game at UTSA. Johnson is approaching becoming the 19th member of the UTA 1,000-point club. Johnson has 914 points. She is nearing the all-time UTA steals mark as she is currently third in program history with 254. Allison Gray has the all-time mark at 285. Johnson is 15th in the Sun Belt in career steals. She has 3 seasons that are inside UTA s single-season top 10 marks as she had 93 in her junior season (16-17), 81 as a freshman, and 73 during her sophomore season (injury midway through). Johnson is 8th in UTA history with 243 assists. THE FRIENDLY CONFINES OF CPC UTA was 13-2 at College Park Center during the 2017-18 season with the lone losses coming to Houston and South Alabama.
