The Coaches: St. Norbert coach Tim Coghlin (UW-Stevens Point, 1989) is 332-95- 35 in his 16th season in De Pere. The Green Knights are 188-26-18 in the last seven seasons. MSOE coach Mark Ostapina (Wisconsin, 1979) is 100-84-6 in his eighth season in Milwaukee. He is 163-168-14 in 14 years overall as a head coach, posting a 63-84-8 in six years at New England (N.H.) College. About the Green Knights: St. Norbert split a pair of road games in its last weekend before semester break. The Green Knights lost to UW-Stout 5-2 on Dec. 5 before rallying to top UW-River Falls 4-3 the next night. The Green Knights are 10-3 overall and 4-2 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association. Junior forward A.J. Gale continues to hold the team scoring lead with 10 goals and eight assists for 18 points. Junior forward Shane Wheeler has five goals and eight assists for 13 points, while sophomore defenseman Nick Tabisz has three goals and a team-high nine assists for 12 points. Freshman forward Alain Joanette and senior forward Ryan Petersen both have 11 points apiece, while sophomore forward Brandon Longley has eight goals. Sophomore goaltender B.J. O Brien is 6-1 overall with a 2.53 goals against average and.910 save percentage. Sophomore Blake Bashor is 4-2 with a 2.22 goals against average and.907 save percentage. The Green Knights are scoring 4.23 goals per game while allowing 2.38 goals per game. St. Norbert is 21-for-79 (26.6 percent) on the power play and is 67-for-77 (87.0 percent) on the penalty kill. About the Raiders: Milwaukee School of Engineering has been idle since the weekend of Dec. 5-6, when it lost a pair of onegoal games to Adrian by scores of 2-1 and 6-5. The Raiders are 4-5-1 overall and 3-4 in the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association. MSOE did post a 3-3 tie at NCHA leader UW-Superior on Nov. 29. Eight of the Raiders 10 games have been decided by one goal or less. Junior forward Steve Smiddy leads MSOE in scoring with three goals and nine assists for 12 points. Senior defenseman Jason Woll has eight assists for eight points, while freshman forward Brock King is the team s third-leading scorer with four goals and one assist for five points. Freshman goaltender Conner Toomey has seen most of the action in goal for the Raiders this season. Toomey is 4-4-1 overall with a 2.11 goals against average and.924 save percentage. MSOE is averaging 2.30 goals per game while allowing 2.20 goals per game. The Raiders are 6-for-65 (9.2 percent) on the power play and are 45-for-54 (83.3 percent) on the penalty kill. Shorty Surprise: St. Norbert has already registered three shorthanded goals this season, its second-most in the last six years. The Green Knights have shorthanded markers this year from Ryan Petersen, Brandon Longley and Tyler Allen. St. Norbert had just one shorty in 2007-08 after tying a school record with seven shorties in 2006-07. St. Norbert leads the NCHA in special teams this season. The Green Knights have scored 21 power-play goals and have allowed two shorthanded goals for a plus-19 with a man advantage. St. Norbert has allowed 10 power-play goals while scoring three shorthanded goals for a minus-seven when on the penalty kill. St. Norbert s total of plus-12 is ahead of UW-Superior s net special teams total of plus-7. Four Factor: When St. Norbert s opponent has scored exactly four goals in recent history, it has usually spelled doom for the Green Knights. In St. Norbert s last 94 games, opponents have scored exactly four

goals six times. The Green Knights are 1-5 in those games. St. Norbert s last four losses have all come when its opponent found twine four times. Oswego State owns two of those victories - in the 2007 Frozen Four and on Nov. 28, 2008 at St. Norbert - both 4-3 scores. UW-Superior topped the Green Knights 4-3 this season on Nov. 22, while Gustavus Adolphus handed St. Norbert its only loss in 2007-08 by a 4-2 score. Lake Forest also beat St. Norbert 4-2 on Feb. 11, 2006. The Green Knights lone win recently in the situation came in a stirring 5-4 overtime win over Hobart in the 2006 Frozen Four. Streak Stuff: St. Norbert had its 37-game unbeaten streak snapped with a 4-3 loss to UW-Superior on Nov. 22. The long skein of games without a loss was the longest in any division of NCAA hockey since 1986 and the only streak in the top nine all-time since 1996. St. Norbert s unbeaten streak is impressive considering the level of competition in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association, playing at least 18 games annually against league foes. The Green Knights 37-game unbeaten streak is the secondlongest in Division III history. Massachusetts-Dartmouth holds the Division III record at 38 games from Jan. 16, 1985 to March 2, 1986. St. Norbert has had two 19-game unbeaten streaks in its history, and fashioned a 26-game skein during the 2004-05 season. With its collection of unbeaten streaks of at least 19 games, St. Norbert now has four of the top 13 unbeaten streaks in NCAA Division III history. Middlebury is the only other Division III school which has at least two unbeaten streaks of at least 19 games. St. Norbert s best ever stretch of hockey came at the end of the 2002-03 season into the 2003-04 season. The Green Knights carried a 19- game unbeaten streak (17-0-2) into the 2003 Frozen Four before losing to Norwich in a national semifinal. St. Norbert then opened the 2003-04 season 11-0-1. St. Norbert was 28-1- 2 over that 31-game stretch. Dating back to a 2-1 loss to UW- Stout at the Resch Center on Jan. 27, 2007, the Green Knights are an impressive 46-5-4 overall and are 26-2-4 against NCHA opponents. Gimme Five: St. Norbert is unbeaten in its last 211 games when scoring five goals or more with a 206-0-5 mark since a 7-5 loss to Bemidji State in De Pere on Jan. 12, 1996. The Green Knights had an 85-game winning streak snapped when scoring five or more goals when they tied UW-Superior 5-5 on Dec. 3, 2004. St. Norbert is 5-18-4 in its last 27 games when allowing five goals or more dating back to the 1996-97 season. The only wins were a 9-5 win over St. Scholastica on Feb. 20, 1999, a 7-5 win over UW-Stout on Nov. 30, 2001, another win over UW-Stout in an 8-5 triumph on Jan. 14, 2005, a 7-5 win over UW-Stevens Point on Feb. 3, 2007 and a 7-5 win over NCAA Hockey - All Divisions Longest Unbeaten Streaks No. Team Dates Division 42 Bemidji State 11/8/83-12/31/84 II 38 Mass.-Dartmouth 1/16/85-3/2/86 III 38 Rensselaer 11/24/84-11/16/85 I 37 St. Norbert 11/10/07-11/21/08 III 36 Mass.-Lowell 1/15/81-1/26/82 II 34 Alabama-Huntsville 2/4/95-3/9/96 II 30 Cornell 11/22/69-11/21/70 I 29 Middlebury 12/31/94-1/7/96 III 29 Northern Michigan 12/28/90-10/25/91 I Head Coach Tim Coghlin Education: Bachelor s degree in communications at UW-Stevens Point (1989); master s degree in education at UW-Stevens Point (1995).
