of the Connecticut Marine Model Society, An IPMS Connecticut Chapter The newsletter June 8, 2013 CMMS BUFFET DAY! WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW THE meeting opened at 10 am, with Nic back at the helm. 24 members in attendance and 1 guest returning (Joe West). And congratulations go out to Gary Little on the birth of his new 30-cup coffee pot! TREASURER'S REPORT: Pete Carlin, always the optimist, noted our treasury was half full. SECRETARY'S REPORT: Bill noted that Bill Dernhart, a guest of Dave Williams at the recent convention, has joined the Club and is sending in this dues. His first meeting will be in September. 32nd NE Clubs Conference: Ron Neilson is pursuing all media outlets for publicizing the event. Dave and Tom will be going to the conference site to measure the layout, size of the tables, and space available for the vendors. Mystic Anyone: Interest was shown by some of trying to arrange a tour of inner sanctums of Mystic's ship models collection, et al, this summer. If you are interested, contact Tom Kane. See the Morgan launch - July 21, 2013 1

THIS MONTHS PRESENTERS Pete Carlin, Ed Petrucci, Tom Kane, Bill Strachan, Fred Kerson, Dave Dinan, Ron Neilson, John Leinung, John West (guest), and Richard Griffith THIS MONTH'S PHOTO GALLERY Tom Kane, Tug boat restoration continues Ed. Note: The paint chips/paint was from Lowe's not Home Depot as reported last issue. Tom gave us a look at the rudder mechanism. Being true to the original model required restoration of the moveable rudder system. Not only is the rudder moveable, it actually operates from the pilot house wheel. In the first picture you will see a water barrel on the roof. The covers a screw holding the lower housing in place but making future access to the rudder mechanism possible. Note that all parts, with the exception of the wheel house, the original parts of the model. Nice job, Tom! The pulley system restored. 2

Ed Petrucci's, Little Mermaid This is a Replica Seacraft 1/2 = 1' 0 scale cardboard model of a Cat Boat Ed made for daughter #2 in 1980. Using the cardboard frames as templates, he made 1/8 plywood frames and planked the hull with 1/16 x 1-1/4 pine planking. Very Nice, Ed! 3

Pete Carlin, Line seizing for the Emma C. Berry Pete's adapted String-a-Long. Pete gave us a demonstration of how he modified the String-a-Long to get the required length of seized line for the Berry. He uses alligator clips a weights to maintain tension and note the spool of thread attached at the bottom of the Cclamp to maintain a continuous feed. He also use a product-rainy's Dave's Flexament, a durable permanent seal that dries clear and remains flexible, even when dry. It is widely used in fly tying. He seizes the line about a half inch and then applies the sealant. The bowsprit shrouds never had it so good. Pete trying to get the thread to Go-a-Long! 4

Bill Strachan, Confederacy's initial framing I'm making some modifications on this build. Stem, Keel and Stern post were re-made using pear. Pear was also used for the shadow box frames. As I would very much like to rig this model, the masts have be angled and stepped to accommodate those wishes. Rigging will be done from the Crother's plans. Deck planking is maple. I was prepared for this, and I fully embrace the blotchiness. As matter of fact, my blotchiness ranks right up there with Ron's Maybe even better! 5

Fred Kerson, Niagara: a unique presentation (or two) A creative interpretation of the Model Shipways's kit using his special techniques! And a special gift from Dave D. to an antique lover! 6

John Leinung, a narrow opening appears ahead, Captain. Built from plans from an E. Armitage McCann book John was kind enough to tell us how they go into the bottle. Abercrombie & Fitch bought four of John's general clippers of the time, for resale on year. The fun part? You have to empty the bottle before starting, so Please ship model responsibly. 7

Duff Griffith, Half Moon Duff is using walnut and cherry for the planking. The plans are Boucher, drawn in 1933. In the foreground, not 3 new gizmos from Duff. From Left to Right, a clamp for odd shaped parts (ref: Edward J. Tosti's The Naiad Frigate (38) 797, vol..1, pp 52-53), a clamp for using a small plan to trim planking, and a PVC clamp which functions as item #2, but is hand held. The PVC contour sanders use Gorilla Glue to fasten the sand paper. 8

Joe West (Guest), a Man and his car! This is a vintage Tinker Toy, of a Graham sedan. O to be a kid again! Another oldie but goodie: a Dinky Toy of the Queen Mary! 9

Ron Neilson, Granado, from a Caldercraft kit Believe it or not, this was just the third model Ron ever built. This one, at least fits in the back of his car! 10

Ed's Little Mermaid plans. Note the paper folds, etc. You probably know I really like weathered models. Here is an article I though might be of interest on the subject: 11

Dave Dinan's Shop Tips #1 X-Acto has upgraded the #11 blade. The Z blade is the sharpest they have ever made. Bit pricy though, a 100 box runs about $50.00. #2 Problem: Dave's Corvette funnel (see last issue) need a clinker screen. This means 10 to 12 soft solders to create a screen about the size of a dime. Solution: Using Oatley's H20(5) water soluable past and TIK solder (melts at 275 degrees), Dave set the joints to be soldered, on an appropriate surface, applied the paste and set the two pieces that will form the joint as close to one another as possible without actually touching each other. He have a minute sliver of TIK solder and placed it as closed to the joint as possible, but again, to actually touching the metal. On the other side of the joint, Dave brought the soldering iron as close to the solder joint as needed to create the flow of the solder into the joint. Wallah! The heat sucks the solder into the joint with out any contact. 15

Now you know what a clinker screen looks like! Brilliant, Dave! Our next meeting is Saturday, September 14, 2013, 10:00 A.M. To???? At the University of New Haven 300 Orange Ave,, West Haven, CT 06531 In Kaplan Hall, Room 207.
