Page 2 Memberships The club currently boasts a member ship of 266 members. Remember that club dues are effective for a calendar year, so be sure to pay your 2012 dues. You can find more information on our website at www.taftsc.com/membership.html. Please note that your membership expiration date is printed on your address label on this newsletter. Please do not let your membership expire. If you think there is an error, please contact us and we will help get it figured out. January-12 means January 2012 aka over due! Get Well Soon Taft Sportsmen s Club We are keeping Carolyn Frideres (Jimmy & Karen Chitwood s aunt) in our prayers for physical healing. Please get well soon. Meeting Minutes Online Interested on what happens at the monthly meetings and board meetings of the Taft Sportsmen s Club? Well now you can read the public records of these meetings online from our website. Go to www.taftsc.com/newsletter.html for a listing of the meeting minutes as well as the club constitution and by-laws. Range Vandalism & New Gate Code It is with great disappointment that we must report that there has been vandalism at the range over the last month or two. People are taking nontarget items from behind the sea trains and shooting them in the bays. Further, people have started shooting glass and other items in the bays and leaving behind a mess. The gate combination is changing effective 9/1/2012 and the new combination is 1156. Please do not share this combination with anyone. If they are a member, they will receive it in this newsletter or by e-mail. If you observe someone shooting items that are not targets and belong to the club, please call 745-0416, extension 1 or even the Taft Police Department and report these vandalism crimes. Our club members work hard to provide the club with quality range props that are not targets and no one has the right to take these items and shoot them. Junior Pheasant Hunt We have set the dates and times for the 18 th Annual J.C. Chitwood Memorial Junior Pheasant Hunt for the weekend of November 17 th and 18 th. Please see our flyer on the next page for more information about whom is eligible and how to register. The range props for IDPA were taken down from their storage area and shot. This is unacceptable. If you see someone shooting range props or the range benches, please call 745-0416 or the Taft Police Department and report it immediately. Please help keep your range clean and stop vandalism by reporting it and not sharing the gate combination with anyone. If they are a member, they have the combination.

Page 4 Taft Sportsmen s Club Take Action to Oppose SB 1221 Today!!! SB 1221 would ban the use of dogs for hunting bear and bobcats with limited exceptions, require increased licensing and microchip insertion for those exceptions, authorize game wardens to dispatch any dog that chases a bear or bobcat, and increase bear hunting tag fees. It is absolutely critical that all hunters call their Assemblyperson or State Senator and urge them to oppose SB 1221. The SB 1221 has been amended a few times and it is a fluid situation. By the time this newsletter is published, it might already be on the Governor s desk (It has in fact reached the Governor s desk). If that happens, you must contact the governor and voice your desire for him to veto the bill. Do not make the mistake of thinking because you do not hunt bears or bobcats with dogs that this bill does not matter to you. The animal rights extremists are using an incremental approach and are guaranteed to come after your bird dogs next. If you value liberty and your hunting tradition, you must oppose this bill. You can contact Assemblywoman Shannon Grove at 661 395-2995 or receive updates by e-mailing assemblymember.grove@assembly.ca.gov. You can contact Senator Jean Fuller at 661 323-0443 or by e-mailing senate.fuller@senate.ca.gov. Club Secretary Wes Morris spoke to both representatives staff and they were very quick to give him updates about the bill. Since printing the newsletter, the bill has passed through to the Governor s desk. Please contact him by all of his available means as often as possible. You can find the Governor Jerry Brown s contact information at http://govnews.ca.gov/gov39mail/mail.php. Please call, fax, and e-mail the governor at least once a day. It is all of our responsibility to pass on our hunting heritage to future generations. Please actively contact your representatives to urge them to oppose SB 1221 today and keep an eye on our Facebook Page and website for the latest updates. Donated Ammunition for Sale Longtime Taft Sportsmen s Club member Steve Hill recently donated some of his ammunition to the club. Since some of the ammunition is to some unique firearms, we can t use it for youth shooting, but we can sell it and use the proceeds to fund of our youth programs. If you are interested in purchasing any of this ammunition, please contact us at 661 745-0416 and dial extension 0 or e-mail us at info@taftsc.com.
