It will be here soon! Just a reminder all livestock registrations for fair are due to the office on May 15! More information about fair exhibits, see page 4! 2015 county fair Club Challenge For this year s club challenge, each club will be using their creativity to design or create anything they can imagine from 1-2 wooden pallets! Clubs will be provided with 2 wooden pallets from the Extension office, that were donated from Brent Heizel. The possibilities are endless for what a club can choose to do with their pallets. They can paint designs on them, or dismantle them and build something. The club could work on this together, or members could form a committee to work on this. Pallets can be worked on at the club meetings, or at a designated time., or during our Wood Pallet Workshop April 4, 2015, 12:30-3:00 PM. (Paint and brushes will be available as well as a limited amount of woodworking tools. Pallet Projects will be due to the office on Monday, June 22, 2015 Exhibit Judging day of the fair. Upcoming Activities and Workshops $15 Challenge Event April 4, 2015, 9:00 AM Noon Members will gather at the Jefferson County Extension Office, and parents are welcome to join in! We will travel to Goodwill, the Bargain Box, and consignment shops in town to find outfits for the $15 Challenge (part of the Style Show). Time permitting, we will gather back at the Extension Office after this event to complete paperwork for the Style Show. This is open to all 4-H and Clover Kids members. More information about the $15 Challenge can be found at: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4hfiles/ statefair/sfdocuments/ SF6OThe$15ChallengeJudgesEvalForm.pdf Please note, you can participate in the $15 Challenge at the county fair, even if you do not attend this event. 4-H Club Wood Pallet Challenge Workshop April 4, 2015, 12:30-3:00 PM Clubs will be provided with 2 wood pallets for the members, as well as black, red, blue, green, white, and orange paint. Members can bring additional colors if they choose. A limited amount of woodworking tools will be available to help dismantle wood pallets if groups so choose. At the workshop, you will make a project plan and begin construction. We will also work on exhibit paperwork for the fair. This is for 4-H members only. Cost: $5. 4-H Greenhouse Workshop April 14, 2015 5:30-7:30PM A workshop will be offered to all Jefferson County 4-Her s by Barb Grijalva. 4-Her s will have the opportunity to learn to start seeds, transplant flowers and plants, and possibly more activities based on the weather conditions. If you are interested in participating, call the Extension Office today! We will take the first 15 registrants. 4-H Shooting Sports Workshop April 26, 2015, 2:00-4:00PM At the Southeast Iowa Skeet Club, 2307 200th Street, Fairfield, IA 52556 4-H Safety and Education in Shooting Sports (SESS) uses skills and disciplines of shooting to assist young people in obtaining knowledge and developing life skills. Learn safe and responsible use of firearms and archery equipment including sound decision making, self-discipline, concentration, the highest standards of safety, sportsmanship, and ethical behavior. The disciplines included in this workshop: Archery Rifle Pg. 2 MISSION STATEMENT 4-h empowers youth to reach their full potential working and learning in partnership with caring adults Shotgun This workshop is open to 4-H members and non-4-h members ages 9-18, so 4- H ers can bring friends! However, youth must be at least 12 years old to participate in the shotgun portion of this workshop, and all youth participants will need to have signed parental permission waiver to participate. Livestock Project Information Sheep & Goat Weigh-In Saturday, April 11, 2015 Jefferson County Fairgrounds State Fair Animals between 10:00-11:00 AM for retinal imaging. Please call the Extension Office if you have any questions regarding weigh-in! Horse Practices The first horse practice is Monday, April 27, 6:30-8:30 PM at the fairgrounds. Remember, all 4-H and FFA horse exhibitors must attend at least 2 practices to exhibit at the fair. Also, make sure that you are actively enrolled in your 4-H and FFA Club before attending practices. Practices will continue each Monday until fair. May 15 Livestock Deadline!!! By May 15, the following animals will need to be identified in 4-H Online or at the Extension Office if coming to fair: Breeding Beef, Breeding Sheep, Bucket- Bottle Calves, Cats, Dairy, Dogs, Horses, Pets, Poultry, and Rabbits. Stall fees for all animals coming to fair must be paid in the office by May 15. Horse Clinic- Roping Workshop A Roping Workshop is being offered May 16, 9:00AM 3:00PM.This workshop will be led by Josh Neely with Off-horse instruction in the morning and On-horse instruction in the afternoon. Lunch will be provided. This clinic will be open to the first 10 4-H members to signup. Contact the Extension Office if you are interested! FSQA Training FSQA Training in Jefferson County will be offered April 15, 6:00-8:00PM. If you are unable to attend training at this time, you can choose any one of the following trainings to attend. If you only need testing, contact Lara to set up a time to test in Jefferson County. Remember, all 4-H and FFA members exhibiting beef, dairy cattle, dairy goats, meat goats, poultry, rabbits, sheep, and swine must either attend training annually or pass the FSQA Test. Appanoose County: April 13,16, 6:00-7:45PM, April 14,15, 4:30-6:15PM Davis County: April 11 & April 20 Washington County: April 25, 8:15AM-12:00PM Johnson County: May 11, 5:30-9:00PM Wapello County: April 25, 2:00-4:00PM If you would like to attend one of these alternative FSQA trainings, please contact the county extension office of the training that you wish to attend to make sure an open spot is available. Southeast Iowa Showdown August 8, 2015 In the morning, there will be a Maintaining and Fitting Your Animal Workshop open to all youth. The livestock show is in the afternoon. This show is for the champion breeding and market animals from the county fairs in southeast Iowa. In the event that the champion does not show, the reserve champion is eligible. Species include: beef cattle, goats, lambs, and swine. For more information, or sponsorship, contact Ben Godwin: (641) 919-8300. Purina/Stock Show University Livestock Clinic Purina/Stock Show University Daily Care, Management, and Nutrition Clinic is a FREE event held at the Three Rivers Town and Country Store, Epworth, Iowa on April 13, 6:00PM. This program will include a discussion with Joel Edge about daily care and management, nutrition/feeding, and achieving goals with your projects, with many opportunities to ask questions. COUNTY AND STATE FAIR INFORMATION The Greater Jefferson County Fair June 24-29, 2015 Here is some important information regarding 4-H and FFA members eligibility to exhibit projects at the fair. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Courtney at the Extension Office! It is best to address all questions and concerns now, before livestock deadlines and before fair begins! How do I know I am eligible to exhibit at the fair? All 4-H members who are exhibiting static projects or animal projects must be enrolled in 4-H Online (or completed paperwork) and must participate in a minimum of 6 hours of intentional, youth development learning experiences with a caring adult (Iowa 4-H Participation Policy). This includes time spent attending meetings, workshops, camps, community service projects, giving a presentation, or keeping records of activities. If you have any questions, please talk to your 4-H leader or contact the Extension Office. FFA members must be properly enrolled in their FFA chapter, have paid dues, and be in good standing with their schools. All 4-H and FFA members exhibiting beef, dairy cows, dairy goats, meat goats, poultry, rabbits, sheep, and swine must have attended an FSQA training or tested out. What paperwork is required for exhibiting at the fair? All Static Exhibits require an Exhibit Form to be completed and attached to the project. Entries in Communications, Style Show, and Photography will require a separate form. Most Animal Exhibits do not require paperwork to be handed in during the fair. Instead, forms will be completed and filed in member s record books. These are due in the fall. Bucket-Bottle Calves and Lambs do require paperwork to be filled out before the fair. If you are exhibiting in either of these divisions, please contact the Extension Office when your project begins. The Advanced Cattle Feeding Pen of 3 also requires paperwork to be completed for the fair. All paperwork is available at the Jefferson County Extension Office and on our website. How do I sign-up to exhibit my projects? Animal Exhibits All stall fees, livestock entries, and identifications must be completed by May 15! Entries can be made online from home into 4-H Online or entries may be made at the Extension Office. Instructions for online entries can be found in the May newsletter. If you would like to make entries before that date, please contact the Extension Office. Static Exhibits Statics exhibits do not need to be entered before fair. Simply bring them to the Activity Building on Monday, June 22 for judging. Communications and Style Show Entries must be turned into the Extension Office by June 1. If you have questions regarding any exhibits at the fair, please do not hesitate to contact Lara by visiting the Extension Office, by phone (641) 472-4166, or by e-mail wurtz@iastate.edu. Animal Exhibits 4-H Market Broiler entries are due May 1. Rabbit entries are due July 1. All other animal entries must be made by May 15 into 4-H Online. To be eligible to show a animal at the Iowa State Fair through 4-H, members must have completed 5th-12th grade during the 2014-2015 school year. For more information, visit the Iowa 4-H Livestock website: August 13-23, 2015 Static Exhibits All static exhibits will advance from the Greater Jefferson County Fair to the Iowa State Fair. Members must have completed 5th grade in order to be eligible for their project to advance. Pg. 4

Rule Changes for Fair 2015 The following is a list of rule changes for the Fair Book, which will be effective for county fair 2015. Static Exhibits CLASS 10303 DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT A photo or series of photos submitted electronically, not printed. Photos in this class will be submitted, viewed, evaluated, and displayed electronically. 1. Photographs may be either black and white or color. 2. Photographs will not be printed. 3. Entries may be a single photo or a series of photos. A series is a group of photographs (3-5) that are related or tell a step-by-step story. Series photo entries must have all photos in the series viewable at the same time. 4. Photos entered should be submitted at the highest resolution possible. A finished file size of 1-3MB is recommended. 5. Photos should be submitted in an acceptable and commonly used format for easy viewing. 6. Subject matter of photographs must be in good taste, and be appropriate for public display in a 4-H setting. 7. Photographs depicting unsafe practices or illegal activities will not be displayed. 8. Iowa State Fair 4-H photography exhibitors must use the Photo Exhibit Label to provide required information or photo exhibits. The Phot Exhibit Label may be submitted electronically with the photo entry. 9. At Iowa State Fair exhibitors entered in 4-H Photography are not eligible to exhibit in the FFA photography show and vice-versa. 10. Photos entered in this class will be evaluated on the same evaluation criteria used for printed photographs. Livestock Horses: The following rules have been added/updated in 4-H Rules and Regulations for Equine Shows in Iowa. Increase from 2 horses to 3 horses entered per exhibitor Each exhibitor is still limited to 6 total classes Important ID Reminders All 4-H horses must be identified in 4hOnline by May 15 th ID a maximum of 5 horses total per 4-H er Of those 5, max. of 2 can be leased NO leasing of halter horses Leased horses must have a completed lease form in 4HOnline Each horse can only be ID ed by ONE 4-H er, unless: There are more 4-H ers in a family than horses for example, 4-H er A and B could both ID horse X 4-H ers can ID horses in 4-H and FFA as long as they are DIFFERENT horses for example, horse A and B in 4-H, horse C and D in FFA State Fair exhibitors will still have to choose to show in either the 4-H horse show OR the FFA horse show, not both; but, they could show FFA at county and then 4-H at state fair (with different horses) State Fair 4-H horses MUST have photos uploaded into 4hOnline by May 15 th Lease agreements, if applicable, must also be uploaded into 4hOnline by May 15 th Meat Goats: 4.) Summer 2015 4-H Camp Opportunities Summer Day Camps Summer day camps are currently being planned and will be announced in the May Newsletter! All camps will be held in July. We will offer camps for Kindergarten through 6th grade. Iowa 4-H Youth Conference Grades: Youth who have completed 8th-12th grade; they do not have to be 4 -H members. Dates: June 30-July 2, 2015 Location: Iowa State University Cost: $175 and financial aid is available Activities: At the conference, you will be able to meet new friends, listen to speakers, have fun, attend workshops, make memories, and give back! You can attend the conference workshops, or participate in camera corps, the Animal Science Round-Up, or the CSI: Crops to learn about your interest area! If you are interested in attending, more information is available at: www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/iowa4hyouthconference Region 19 4-H Intermediate Mystery Day Trip! Date: June 11, 2015 Who can Participate: 7th & 8th Graders ( Each county will have 5 available seats, after the first 5 have signed up, you will be placed on a waiting list.) Cost: $100.00 (This covers all meals and events for the day) Book your seat for a one day fun-filled Mystery Trip! We will be traveling to a, mystery town where you will get to visit 6 different exciting locations! You won t want to miss this fun trip. Check out the trip schedule and registration form included in this Newsletter for more information. Pg. 6 Help Wanted! We are looking for 1-2 part-time personnel to help during the week of the 2015 Jefferson County Fair and Summer Day Camps throughout the last 3 weeks of July. Please fill out an application, which can be picked up at the Extension Office or found on our website: www.extension.iastate.edu/jefferson/4h Applications are due May 1, 2015 at 4:30 PM. A decision will be made following the Extension Council Meeting on May 4. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Lara at the Extension Office! We are looking for high school youth are interested in volunteering at summer day camps! This summer, the Jefferson County Extension Office and 4-H will be offering day camps for youth Kindergarten 6th grade. We would like assistance from high school 4-H members for each of these camps. In addition, we will require training and preparation from these high school members before camp begins.

State 4-H Camps Iowa 4-H is offering three 5-day/4 night camps for youth in grades 5-8 during the 2014-2015 school year. Youth do not have to be in 4-H to attend these camps, so invite a friend to join you! For each camp you can select a specialized educational track that explores a topic that interests you. Here s what s on the schedule: State 4-H And My World Camp, June 21-25 Campers can choose one of these tracks to explore: Cultural Ambassadors: Learn about and appreciate the broad range and richness of different cultures and traditions that make up our global society. Become an agent of change to help others celebrate diverse cultures. Cook This!...International: Develop your nutrition knowledge and culinary skills through hands-on activities as you taste and prepare ethnic cuisines. Explore new flavors while practicing leadership, citizenship and communication skills. Iowa Young Leaders: Strengthen your skills in team building, group leadership, and community leadership then learn how to put it into practice in your community after you return home. State 4-H Science Explorers I, July 5-9 Campers can choose one of these tracks to explore: 4-H STEM Catalysts: Become a catalyst for change by exploring robotics, alternative energies, and science of motion; see how science and technology are used in nature and everyday life. Explore STEM related careers. 4-H Nature Explorers: Experience the natural setting of the Iowa 4-H Center by learning about its land, prairie, water resources, and wildlife. Bean Green: Plant-based Science: Get on the cutting edge of research and technology, exploring the latest developments in Bioenergy, Agricultural Production, and the Environment. Explore emerging career possibilities in agriculture and bioenergy. State 4-H Science Explorers II, July 12-16 Campers can choose one of these tracks to explore: 4-H STEM Catalysts: Become a catalyst for change by exploring robotics, alternative energies, and science of motion; see how science and technology are used in nature and everyday life. Explore STEM related careers. Bean Green: Plant-based Science: Get on the cutting edge of research and technology, exploring the latest developments in Bioenergy, Agricultural Production, and the Environment. Explore emerging career possibilities in agriculture and bioenergy. Veterinary and Animal Science Explorers: Dig deeper by observing animals, learning about normal animal behavior, and applying what you learn. Get on track for a career in animal or veterinary science. All camps are held at the Iowa 4-H Center in Madrid, Iowa. In addition to learning about the camp topics, campers will also be able to enjoy swimming, hiking, climbing, recreation, sports, crafts, campfires, and more! Cost for each camp is $350 for 4-H members, $380 for non-members which includes all meals, lodging, and special programming costs. PROJECT CORNER It s time to think about projects you can make for the county fair this year! Remember that some of the projects and assignments you create in classes at school will make great county fair exhibits. Check out some of these ideas created by other 4-H ers around the state.
