Pro Staff Team News October 2007 Volume 4.10 Super Series Wedding Rings Clobber Lake Havasu Striper (Part 2 ) The Mack s Lure Super Series Wedding Ring is living up to its name. In my last column I told how anglers fishing Lake Havasu have found that Super Series Wedding Rings are indeed a super lure for the lake s striped bass. The man I talked about in my previous column was Jerry Sanford, of Havasu City, Arizona. Sanford, you ll recall, told me how a friend named Joe Miler had introduced him to these lures. Miler had been using the Super Series Wedding Ring at Havasu for some time. I thought it would be good to get details on exactly how Miler uses his Super Series Rings. He shared those details with me and it pleases me to share them with you. These stripers came out of Lake Mead, Nevada. Stripers like this at Arizona s Lake Havasu have been clobbering Mack s Lure Super Series Wedding Ring spinners. I ve tried several different set ups, Miler says. Basically I use 50-pound Power Pro braid as my main line. Sometimes I use a Mack s Lure Hot Wings right beneath my sinker. I attach the leader that comes with the Wedding Ring to the Hot Wings. That way I have the flash of the (Continued on Page 2)

Often this set up works really well. You don t have to talk to Joe Miler long before you ll find out exactly how he feels about the Super Series spinners. It amazes me, he says. When I go out with somebody who isn t using a Wedding Ring. I usually wind up catching five or six fish to their one. If that sounds too good to be true, remember what Jerry Sanford told me about the time he went out with Miler. I told about it in my previous column. Joe caught 10 fish to my one with his Super Series spinner, was Sanford s comment. Miler favors a piece of anchovy for use on the hook of the Super Series, but doesn t limit himself to just that one bait. He sometimes switches to nightcrawlers. Now and then he winds up catching both Lake Havasu s largemouth and smallmouth bass on this same lure. As I ve said, he says, the lure just continues to amaze me. I knew it would catch stripers because I ve gone out and caught as many as 30 fish on it in a couple of hours. But I didn t expect it to catch bass as well. I m learning more about it all the time. Miler doesn t employ a snubber as some anglers do on the set ups they use for trolling. I If you re heading out to troll for stripers, give them a look at one or another of these Super Series Wedding Ring spinners. They have been catching a bunch of fish lately at Lake Havasu in Arizona. (Continued on Page 3) 2

(Continued from Page 2) don t like to put any more stuff on my line than I have to, he says. Instead of using a snubber, I use a very light drag setting on my reel. This striper expert also figures he catches larger than average fish. One of the ways he does this is by getting his spinner down where larger fish are holding. He says he often finds Havasu Lake stripers congregated about 25-feet down. One thing Miler says he d like to see Mack s Lure do is come out with a slightly larger version of the Super Series. I say that, he says, because historically you re going to take larger fish on a larger lure. I suggested that he contact the folks at Mack s Lure in this regard. I know from personal experience that Bob Schmidt and his capable crew up there in the Evergreen State always pay close attention to customer comments. Joe Miler is obviously a thoughtful and dedicated angler. I m always trying new techniques, he says, and I m learning new things as I do. Anglers like Jerry Sanford, the man I wrote about in my previous column, will testify that this is true. As I ve noted, Miler introduced Sanford to the Super Series. I ll bet those Lake Havasu stripers wish Miler would just keep quiet. Why? Because those Mack s Lure Super Series Wedding Rings have been causing them nothing but grief now for months! Pro-Staffer John Grubenhoff fishes his way to his second straight title By Daniel Wattenburger of the East Oregonian UMATILLA - The reigning champion did it again. John Grubenhoff won the Columbia River Walleye Circuit Angler of the Year title for a second straight time Sunday at the Governor s Cup in Umatilla. The Pasco, Wash., fisherman finished fourth at the circuit finale, but had more than enough help from previous tournaments to lock in the title. Partnered with son Jacob Grubenhoff, the expert angler reeled in 12 fish weighing a total of 43.76 pounds during the two days. As he said after winning last year s title, Grubenhoff credited simple consistency over the course of the four-stop circuit to his success. Pre-fishing has a lot to do with it, and makes a big difference, the 20-year veteran of the tour said. We ve been doing it long enough to know the spots and have our favorites. Another key aspect to the duo s success is versatility and figuring out what s working on any given day. Grubenhoff said he and his son tried four or five presentations Sunday before settling on the one they used most of the day. When we pre-fished it, blade baits were working, he said. But today we went with nightcrawlers mostly. Grubenhoff s earlier finishes in the circuit included second, third and fifth places, and he was the sole winner of the title because Jacob missed the Camus stop because of work. The senior Grubenhoff said he d split the $2,000 pot with his son anyway, as he did last year. The pair also won $1,083 for fourth place. Chris Mitchell and Michael Bedker won the Governor s Cup overall, hauling in 21.34 pounds Sunday to keep their lead set by 30.40 pounds Saturday. They cashed in for $3,498 with the win. The names in the top four didn t change between the two days, though Bobby Putnam and Ed Walker overtook Kimo Gabriel and Greg Osborne for second place. It was so aggravating today, said Gabriel, a Hermiston resident. We had the fish to win the tourney, but they kept getting off the line. If we caught every fish that bit, we d have 25 pounds easily. As Gabriel describes it, he and Osborne would catch a fish, then lose a fish, and couldn t put enough weight in their livewells to hold their second-place position. The Hermiston teacher did find a bright spot in the finish, and as he was handed his third place plaque said, it s always good to beat a Grubenhoff. Walker said their fish count was way down Sunday, but they got the right fish to make their move on the leader board. We got the right bites, added Putnam. Both days of the tournament had sunny and calm weather, which some fishermen love and others hate. John Grubenhoff is among those who d rather face adversity on the water. I like the wind in my face, he said. It eliminates a lot of the field right away and I ve always done well when it s choppy. Grubenhoff has won eight walleye tournaments over his career. FINAL RESULTS 1. Mitchell/Bedker 51.74 2. Putnam/Walker 48.32 3. Gabriel/Osborne 47.64 (Continued Page 4) 3

Bennett/Spalding 34.34 Promotional Pointers Knowing Your Stuff One of the first things taught to prospective new salesmen is to know your product inside and out. That is something that helps not matter what you are selling or promoting. And after all, our prostaffers are a very important part of our sales staff. One of the reasons you are on the Mack s Lure pro-staff is the fact that you like our products, use them, and have had success with them. But we can take that one step farther. Do you really know them inside and out particularly the ones you use? See if you can answer these questions: For you walleye pro-staffers; how long is the leader on a J-series Wally Pop? What size are the hooks on a large Cha-Cha? Here s a couple for you salmon and trout guys; how many colors does the Sledge Hammer come in? How much does a Promise Keeper weigh? You probably got them right, but if you didn t, take a few minutes to look over the catalog in a little more detail and better familiarize yourself with our products. It always looks better if you know most of the answers off the top of your head instead of having to look them up. I speak from experience. I spent a lot of time going over 4 the catalog when I first went to work for Mack s Lure. Yet only a couple weeks into the job, I was asked by a dealer how long the leader was on a Wally Pop and I couldn t answer the question. Kinda embarassing. Fortunately I just opened a package and pulled one out to show him. When I walked out of the store I resolved to spend more time with the catalog so I could more effectively answer any question that comes up. You are not expected to know everything of course. There are just too many variables, but you should be intimately familiar with the products you mostly promote. And you should be generally familiar with the other products that you don t see much of. Like how many colors the Sledge Hammer comes in (8)! Keep up the good work out there! Bernie Barringer Director of Marketing and Promotions Dear Bernie and Bob - Just got a phone call from fellow pro-staffer Russell Johnston. He called me from the Skykomish River to report catching six pink salmon this morning on the Mack s pink Glo-Getter Jig. He caught another three yesterday. He s doing so well that he s taken to setting up these jigs and float bobbers for other anglers on the stream who are wondering what he is using. Once he did he was able to watch them start catching fish too. Now that is a way to make a person into a believer! With the mention of these lures in two recent Fishing and Hunting News articles and their proven success on the river I suspect sales will be going up in the NW for these lures. Too bad pink salmon only come into Puget Sound Rivers every other year! Take care, John Kruse Malaga, WA Ladies, here they are,, hats made just for you and Mack s Lure has one waiting for you!
