JUGGERS RACING TEAM SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER

Soundings Newsletter of South Port Sailing Club October 2017 Message from Commodore Kelly Johnson Happy Hour Friday October 6th September has flown by and I m not entirely sure that I am ready for fall, especially since we enjoyed some amazing summerlike weather at the end of September. Many events around the club kept us busy during the month of September. Once again we kicked off the month with a Happy Hour (always a good chance to catch up over a bite or beverage or both). Our Monday and Thursday racing concluded with the last race on Sept. 25th. On the 10 th SPSC and LMYC hosted the annual Sail for Hospice regatta. I d like to thank everyone who participated, whether your participation involved racing, raising or donating money, attending or helping out with the BBQ. South Port again led the charge in fundraising. We had 17 boats compete in our event and raised $4000. LaSalle Mariners had 3 boats participate in their event and raised $840. Congratulations to both clubs for supporting the local Windsor & Essex County Hospice. The following weekend SPSC hosted the Harvest Moon regatta in which 30 boats participated in a rare light air version of the race. Thank you to all who competed and helped with the event. Also, a big thank you to the 13 visiting boats who took the time to travel to our club. It was great to see so many boats on the line and to catch up after the race. During the month of October we have the following events: Oct. 1 st the final Turtle Stampede race, Oct. 2 nd Mainstays Pot Luck, Oct. 6 th Happy Hour, Oct. 14 th cradle moving, Oct 15 th SPSC Cradle Robber race, Oct. 21 st Haul Out, and Oct. 28 th & 29 th Shark Frostbite Regatta. Also, please note the Fall Furl is being held on Nov. 4 th. Looks like the final work party will be a little late this year due to all of the above! 1 FALL FURL Saturday November 4th See page 10 for Reservation form & details Annual General Meeting Tuesday November 21, 2017 Content 7:00 pm Main Room Committee Reports on the season & election of the 2018 Flag Officers and Committee Chairs. From Property Chair, Dave Robichaud The season will soon be at an end and a final work party will be late this year due to all the events taking place in October. It will be scheduled after the Shark Regatta, probably November 4th. The date will be confirmed late October via email, as well as posted on Facebook, and noted on the easel in the club foyer. It will include the usual tasks of moving the harbour bins to the sundeck area, removing hoses and ends from the docks, south side and front of clubhouse, as well as driveway and shed and storing them in the shed for the winter, moving dock carts to the shed, washing outside blue boxes and garbage pails and storing at the recycle area, flushing and moving the honey bucket to the shed and a general clean up of the grounds and parking lot. A reminder to all members, you are not required to attend the club daily during your week of clubhouse duties. It is suggested the clubhouse be cleaned on a day you choose, and revisited once or twice during the week, especially after race nights to empty recycle and garbage. The week runs from Sunday to Saturday. All members are expected to assist with garbage and recycle whether you are on duty or not. If you see a full garbage pail, please help out by changing the bag and taking it to the bin on your way out the drive. Full recycle bins can be emptied on the south side of the clubhouse in the designated area. There were complaints and frustration with the grounds this summer as the kids were leaving a mess during sailing school lessons. We hope this will be rectified next season. Please put in your work chits for club hours when you do them, or when the billings go out it has to be changed if you did not submit your hours and are charged when you should not be. This makes extra work for Brenda. Work hour summaries are posted monthly on the main board in the foyer. If you see a discrepancy, please let us know. And last but not least, we have had a problem with the club being left open, and not secured this summer on several occasions. The sunroom windows can be left open unless there is a threat of a storm as the 2 entry doors are unlocked all summer, but the doors from the sunroom to the main clubhouse, the kitchen pass through, front door and main room windows should be closed and locked late day. To those who carry out their clubhouse duties and members who assist with tasks throughout the year.. Thank you! Work hours: Jackie (robtim@cogeco.ca) Doug Crowe (dcrowe@crawfordpackaging.com) 2 From the Harbourmaster, Peter Soles Cradle Moving & Haul Out 9:00 a.m. Cradle moving Saturday October 14th (bring any tools you may need) 7:30 a.m. Haul Out Saturday October 21st Winter storage forms and payment to be submitted by October 7th All dry sailed boats & dinghies must be removed from the main lot before October 12th. in order to position the cradles. The winter storage and release forms are available in September Soundings. Remember parking on Haul Out day is only permitted along the north side of the driveway, and only after the crane has arrived. The main lot is reserved for the crane. If any members (new or old) have any questions regarding the forms or general practices of haul out, please feel free to contact me. petersoles@gmail.com or 519-739-0263 To all members: Both Launch and Haul out days are not eligible for work hours

This years banquet is November 4th at the Ciociaro Club. See page 10 of this issue for details and the reservation form. There will be great food, awards, door prizes, music and lots of visiting. Since this is a celebration of the past sailing season why not invite those who helped make it so much fun. Please fill out the form and drop it off to the office, or mail to the club address. There will be a Happy Hour on Friday October 6th. Get your Thanksgiving weekend started with friends, burgers, hot dogs and some festive desserts. Hope to see you around the club this month as we slowly wind things up after another season on the water. But don't worry, there will be social gatherings and events continuing through the fall and winter months at the club, so keep an eye out for emails and notices in Soundings! Sail for Hospice 2017 17 boats raced Sunday September 10th bringing in a total of $4,000.00 in donations. With the contribution from LMYC our 2 clubs donated $4,840.00 to The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County this year. Thank you to all the skippers, crew, donors and to Kelly & Joe for coordinating the event another year! From member, John Marentette We had a fun weekend at the Cedar Island Yacht Club Rumline and Labour Day Regattas. Their clubhouse and grounds are really nice, and I recommend everyone stop in some time. Both Spitfire and Spongeworthy launched at the Colchester marina Saturday morning, and raced over to CIYC in the Rumline Race. After racing upwind in wind and waves all the way to CIYC, we ended up 2 nd and 3 rd to Willy Lightfoot s big red Ten Forward. Here is a good pic of the start at Colchester provided by Greg Switzer. Sunday morning saw the start of the Labour Day Regatta with Spitfire and Spongeworthy line up against Ten Forward. This time the course was a windy beat through waves back to Colchester, then a reach to the Colchester light, and a quick reach back to CIYC. The long quick reaches allowed Spitfire to stretch her legs and she finished ahead of both Willy and Mo. 7
