YMCA of Greater Des Moines Basketball Rules 1.1 OUR MISSION The YMCA, founded on Christian principles, is an inclusive association of people united to enrich the quality of family, spiritual, social, mental and physical well-being. OUR VALUES In our youth sports programs, please keep in mind that the YMCA is all about values and character development for our children. CARING, RESPECT, HONESTY and RESPONSIBILITY are the four core values of the YMCA. YMCA Pledge All youth sports begin each game with the YMCA Youth Sports Pledge. Each coach, player and referee will be required to say and adhere to the pledge each game. Win or lose, I pledge to do my best. To be a team player, to respect my teammates, coaches, opponents, and officials and to improve myself in spirit, mind and body. SPORTSMANSHIP Players are responsible for their own actions while coaches are responsible for team members and spectators supporting their team before, during and after the game. Players, coaches and spectators are to display good sportsmanship at all times. Referees govern all play on the field and at the site, their decisions are final. The Sports Director, Site Supervisor, and/or Referee have the authority to remove anyone not displaying good sportsmanship. All future disciplinary action will be decided by the Sports Director. The YMCA enforces a zero-tolerance policy for inappropriate behavior by players, coaches, and parents. Action will be taken by the YMCA concerning all such matters. WEATHER CANCELLATION The League Director or Site Supervisor will determine when a game should be cancelled due to severe weather. Safety is our prime concern at all times. Coaches will be contacted by the League Director, and it will be the coach s responsibility to communicate notice of the cancellation to the parents/guardians of the players. Rules - All Levels Use of Players The intent of this program is to provide equal playing time for all participants regardless of ability. Each player must play half of each game. It is the coach s responsibility to ensure this is being followed. If the referees or site supervisors see this as being a problem then the responsibility of substituting will be taken away from the coach. Unless a player is not playing due to injury or referees request that player should receive equal playing time. Substitutions No free substitutions are allowed unless a player is injured. Substitutions should be done at mid-quarter and between quarters. Each quarter will stop mid-quarter to allow substitutions. However, 7 th /8 th grade teams may use free substitution during the entire game. Clock will not stop mid-quarter for substitution for 7 th /8 th grade teams, so it is the coach s responsibility to ensure equally playing time is achieved.
