Toronto Wildlife Centre Toronto Wildlife Centre (TWC) is the only wildlife centre offering medical care and rehabilitation for sick, injured and orphaned wild animals in the GTA. TWC began operations in March 1993, and our doors have remained open every single day since. In that time, more than 85,000 wild patients have received high quality care, and hundreds of thousands of people have been helped with wildlife-related situations via TWC s Wildlife Emergency Hotline. TWC is a registered charity. Sick, injured and orphaned wild patients are helped almost entirely through donations from generous supporters, and hundreds of volunteers give their time and effort to help. VETERINARY HOSPITAL TWC is the only wildlife centre in Canada with veterinarians trained in wildlife medicine on staff. WILDLIFE REHABILITATION TWC admits approximately 5,000 sick, injured and orphaned wild animals each year. Over 270 different species of wildlife have been admitted for care. WILDLIFE EMERGENCY HOTLINE Approximately 30,000 phone calls are handled by our team each year, providing members of the public with expert advice on a wide range of wildlife issues. WILDLIFE EMERGENCY RESCUE: TWC is the only wildlife centre in Canada with a dedicated wildlife rescue program. From a deer stuck in a pit to a hawk caught in string in a tree, our team carries out challenging, life-saving rescues every day of the year. PILL RESPONSE OIL SPILL RESPONSE When petroleum and other oil-based products spill into bodies of water, our team organizes search and rescue, washes affected animals, and provides medical and rehabilitative care until the patient can be returned to the wild. PUBLIC EDUCATION Education is essential in bridging the gap between nature and urban areas. TWC engages the public and organizations via our website, community presentations and booths, educational campaigns, social and traditional media, newsletters, books and other literature. Wild Ball Overview Wild Ball brings together some of the GTA s most influential residents and leaders with a deep commitment to helping wildlife. The event has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to support the medical care and rehabilitation of sick, injured and orphaned wild animals. This year the ball will take place on Thursday, October 13 th at the Palais Royale Ballroom in Toronto. This stunning venue is located at historic Sunnyside Beach on the shores of Lake Ontario. Together with our sponsors and guests, our goal is to will raise $120,000; funds which will directly support wildlife in need. Our guests will be treated to a delicious multi-course meal prepared by some of Toronto s most revered chefs. This entertaining evening under the stars will include an auction, acrobatic dance and a special performance from Juno award-winning classical guitarist Liona Boyd. This year s theme is Nocturne. All is not quiet in the dead of night. While you are sleeping, a whole world of nocturnal animals are just waking up; a great-horned owl flies over the streets, a flying squirrel glides from tree to tree, and unbeknownst to you a mother Virginia opossum waddles past your doorstep with her babies clinging to her back for the ride. On a hot summer night, take a look up at the streetlights - you may see a few bats catching their dinner, helping to keep the insect population in check. Day or night, we share our urban habitat with many amazing wild animals. Like the nocturne music which is evocative of the night the wild animals that live out their lives between dusk and dawn create their own cacophony of sound - the high pitched howls, barks and yips of a coyote pack, the sharp piping peent of the nighthawk, and the song of the spring peeper tree frog. This call of the wild this wild nocturne - reminds us that our world truly never sleeps; wild things live all around us, at all hours, even in urban centres. Wild Ball will sparkle with starlight and moon shine and celebrate all of the remarkable wild animals that thrive and survive in the post-twilight hours of day. Page 2
