For the first time this season the Travs lost a game that they led after the 6th inning, although it was a scarce 1-0 lead. After a quick start, which included the first run scored in 15 innings, the Travs were held without a run for the last 8 innings. Travs N Birds Tonight is the 258th regular season game between the Travs and Springfield Cardinals, since the Baby Birds joined the Texas League in 2005. The Travelers hold a 116-141 record against Springfield including a 52-78 mark at Hammons Field. The Travs did win last season s series with Springfield 17-15, marking the 3rd season the Travs won the series with the Cardinals. Random Rants Traveler pitchers hold a collective 2.48 ERA in the last 11 games (24 er/87 ip) with batters held to a.216 average (69-319)...Six of the last seven games have been decided by one run with the Travs holding a 2-4 record in them...travs right handed pitcher Orangel Arenas is holding Texas League batters to an.043 batting average (1-for-23)...In 12 games since scoring 20 runs on 24 hits on April 3 the Travs are batting.218 with 29 runs scored Mid-April Moving Day The Los Angeles Angels announced 6 transactions involving the Travelers on Wednesday and Thursday. After Tuesday s loss to Frisco relief pitchers Mike Morin and Michael Brady were promoted to Salt Lake (AAA Pacific Coast) along with utilityman Shawn O Malley. Pitcher Eduard Santos was also activated from the Travs disabled list and transferred to Inland Empire (A+ California). The Travs received 2 relief pitchers; David Carpenter from Salt Lake and 2010 Angels first round draft choice Cam Bedrosian from Inland Empire. Who Needs A Homer? The Travelers only have 2 home runs this year, the fewest hit in the Texas League over 14 games. Their last home run was hit by Kaleb Cowart in the 8th inning on Opening Night on April 3 in Midland, a span of 12 games and 355 at-bats. Currently the Travs are tied for 3rd fewest home runs in Minor League Baseball. Run Rabbits Run Currently the Travs lead the Texas League and the High Minors (AA and AAA) with 24 stolen bases and have 8 players with at least 1 steal. Already this season the Travs have two games with 7 stolen bases including Thursday s 2-1 victory. The Travs hadn t stolen 7 bases in a game since pilfering 8 bases on April 16, 2011 in a 10-2 win over Midland in Little Rock. Career Night Opener Third baseman Kaleb Cowart opened the season with the best game of his career Thursday with 5 base hits and 5 RBIs. Previously Cowart had 4 hits in a game on 9 occasions including 1 game last year with the Travs. The 5 RBIs ties a career high set in 2012 while playing for Cedar Rapids. Lucky Fourteen The Arkansas Travelers began their 14th season as an affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday. The club s 73-66 regular season record was its best since 1998. During the affiliation with the Angels, the Travs hold a record of 863-1061 (.449 pct) and own two Texas League titles (2001, 2008). The 2014 season is the last on a two-year player development contract signed in September 2012. The Travs posted a 2363-2393 record in 35 years as a St. Louis Cardinals affiliate from 1966-2000. Wellman Leads Travs A veteran of 30 seasons in professional baseball, new Travs manager Phillip Wellman is back in a familiar role as manager where he owns a 862-939 record in 15 minor league seasons, including eight years as a manager in the Southern League with the Mississippi Braves (2007-2010) and Chattanooga Lookouts (1999, 2001-2003). Most recently Wellman was the hitting coach for the Springfield Cardinals from 2011 through 2013 and tutored Texas League Players of the Year (Matt Adams - 2011 and Oscar Taveras - 2012). Wellman, a native of Bulverde, Texas, managed the M-Braves to the 2008 Southern League Championship. Wellman went into coaching in 1988 with the Atlanta Braves organization after the end of a four-year playing career as an outfielder and infielder in the minor leagues. He took his first managerial post in 1992 with the Gulf Coast Orioles and managed four years in Rookie-level affiliated baseball. Acquired by Angels from NYY (with Exicardo Cayones) in a trade for Vernon Wells on March 26, 2013. Comes off a 3-2 loss on Saturday against Midland at Dickey-Stephens Park Allowed 9 base runners in 4 innings, but just 2 runs; a sacrifice fly by Dusty Coleman in the 1st inning and a 2nd inning solo homer from Jefry Marte Sneed left 7 runners in 4 innings pitched Earned a Win in Double-A debut in an 8-1 victory at Frisco on April 7. CALIFORNIA ALL-STAR Sneed put together an All-Star first half at Inland Empire last season before missing six weeks due to shoulder tendonitis. Sneed was 7-1 with a 3.12 ERA in 13 first half starts for the 66ers to earn a spot on the California League All Star Team for their annual game against the Carolina League All Stars. PITCHER OF THE WEEK The week before being named an All-Star, Sneed was the Cal League Pitcher of the Week on June 10. He was 2-0 in 2 starts with a 0.69 ERA during that week. CHAMPIONSHIP RUN Sneed returned from the disabled list in time to help the 66ers on their march to the 2013 California League championship appearing in 2 post season contests. Although he posted no wins or losses, Sneed held a 1.46 playoff ERA and held batters to a.195 average.
