HEAD COACH Jim Montgomery Fifth Season Jim Montgomery is in his fifth season behind the bench at DU for 2017-18 after being named the eighth head coach in program history on April 15, 2013. He signed a contract extension last summer that runs through the 2020-21 season. Montgomery, 47, has amassed a record of 106-47-20 at Denver, reaching the Century Mark faster than any coach in DU history. The Montréal, Québec native has led the Pioneers to the NCAA Tournament in each of his seasons in the Mile High City, winning the inaugural NCHC Championship in 2014, making the Elite Eight in 2015 and leading Denver to its first Frozen Four berth since 2005 in 2016 prior to capturing the eighth national title in program history in 2017. He was named a finalist for the Herb Brooks Award as NCHC Coach of the Year in both 2016 and 2017 and won the Spencer Penrose Award as national coach of the year in 2017. Prior to his arrival in Denver, Montgomery spent three seasons (2010-13) as Head Coach/General Manager of the United States Hockey League s Dubuque Fighting Saints, winning a pair of Clark Cup championships (2011 & 2013) as well as a regular season title (2013) and GM of the Year honors (2013). He was an assistant coach at RPI from 2006-10 and began his coaching career at Notre Dame in 2005-06, serving as a volunteer coach with the Fighting Irish. Hockey East s all-time leading scorer with 301 career points (103G-198A), Montgomery won a national title during his senior season at Maine in 1993 and went on to play professionally for 12 years in the NHL, AHL, IHL, UHL, DEL and RSL. Montgomery and his wife Emily live in Highlands Ranch with their two sons and one daughter. Assistant Coach David Carle Fifth Season University of Denver alumnus (Class of 2012) David Carle joined the Pioneers staff on Jan. 1, 2014 following a season-and-a-half as an assistant coach with the USHL s Green Bay Gamblers. During his time with the Gamblers, Carle helped guide Green Bay to an overall mark of 37-23-4 and a second-place finish in the USHL s Eastern Conference with a total of 78 points. In addition, the Gamblers set a franchise record for 15 consecutive victories on their home ice during the 2012-13 campaign. On the international level, Carle also garnered experience as the video coordinator for the gold-medal winning Team USA U-17 team in the 2011 Five Nations Tournament. As a player, Carle was originally recruited to the University of Denver as a player, but was forced to retire from hockey in July of 2008 after being diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy - which is best known as a leading cause of sudden cardiac death in young athletes and is a primary disease of the myocardium muscle of the heart. He was nonetheless selected by Tampa Bay in Round 7 (203rd Overall) of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. The Anchorage, Alaska, native was a standout prep school defenseman at Shattuck-St. Mary s (Minn.), helping the Sabres capture back-to-back national titles in 2007 and 2008. Carle has a rich hockey tradition in his family as his brother Matt became Denver s first Hobey Baker Award winner in 2006 and went on to enjoy a long career in the NHL. His younger brother Alex, meanwhile, is currently in his junior season with the Merrimack College Warriors (Hockey East). Assistant Coach Tavis MacMillan Third Season Longtime Winnipeg Jets (NHL) scout Tavis MacMillan joined the Pioneers as an assistant coach on May 27, 2015. A native of Milk River, Alberta, MacMillan had been on Winnipeg/Atlanta s scouting staff since the 2007-08 NHL season. Prior to joining the Jets/Thrashers franchise, he spent 10 years on the coaching staff of the Alaska-Fairbanks Nanooks (WCHA), including three seasons as head coach (2004-07). MacMillan s uncle John won two national titles (1958, 1960) with the Pioneers as a forward prior to embarking upon a decade-long pro career that included stops in the NHL with Detroit and Toronto, with whom he won a pair of Stanley Cups (1962, 1963). As a player, MacMillan spent four seasons with Alaska-Fairbanks (1990-94), recording 192 points (56G-136A) in 135 career NCAA games. He also played briefly in the ECHL with Greensboro Monarchs and served as a player/marketing director with the WCHL s Alaska Gold Kings in 1995-96. He began his coaching career with the Nanooks in 1996-97.
