WELCOME TO THE 4A STATE BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS! To: 3A Athletic Directors, Coaches, and Crowd Management Supervisors From: Dean Naffziger, 4A State Basketball Tournament Manager Date: February, 2010 Congratulations on your 2009-10 basketball season! As you prepare for the state championship, please read carefully through this booklet. The tournament management looks forward to an outstanding four days of basketball. FORMS The following information is required for EACH team in the tournament: School Profile, Team Roster, Team Photo, Pass List, Supervisors, Cheerleaders, Medical Personnel, Media Form, and the District Personnel. Team medical personnel must also register with the tournament medical authority. All forms are posted on the WIAA Web site and must be filled out on line by the school s athletic director at my.wiaa.com. COACHES/DRAW MEETING The seeding meeting is scheduled for the Sunday preceding the tournament at the WIAA office in Renton. The 3A coaches meeting will be on March 7, 2010 at 3:00 P.M. and the draw will follow immediately. Team captains may attend. ENTRANCE Tournament packets will be issued following the draw meeting. Pins will be handed out at the walk through on Tuesday, March 7, 2010, if all information has been submitted. Four (4) parking passes will be included in the packet. Each team will be issued pins for twelve (12) players, and eight (8) for Coaches, Managers, Statisticians for locker room and floor admittance. An additional pin will be provided if the team has a designated team medical personnel. Each of these players and school personnel will be hand stamped with a fluorescent stamp at the pass gate for entrance into the facility. One (1) student photographer, one (1) student press and (1) student video person will be admitted if registered on the team pass list. Five School Board members and the superintendent will be admitted through the pass gate with proper I.D. No other passes will be authorized. PARKING PASSES Each school will receive four (4) parking passes. These passes must be used for all vehicles (vans, cars, etc.) parking at the event, as the school name on the side of a vehicle will no longer serve as a parking pass. Please note that tournament managers will work with schools that need more passes, although there may be a charge for these passes. SUPERVISORS Head supervisors must meet with the tournament school liaison by half time of the previous 3

game. All supervisors must be listed on the supervisor list, check in at the pass gate, wear the appropriate authorized credential, be readily identifiable and be prepared to supervise the school s rooting section. All credentials must be returned to the pass gate after the game. LOCKER ROOMS AND PRE-GAME WARMUP Upon entering through lower F gate at the Tacoma Dome (approximately one (1) hour before game time) look for the team liaison who will escort the team to the locker room attendants. They will make arrangements for storage of team equipment, location of locker rooms, taping procedures, and pre-game preparations. Access to the designated locker room will be after half time of the preceding game. No one will be allowed into the locker room area without proper credentials. The press will be restricted entry immediately following the game. Each team is responsible for the security of their personal valuables. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE ANYTHING OF VALUE IN THE LOCKER ROOM! Locker room attendants will be stationed outside the locker room at all times to be of assistance to the teams. There will be 15 total chairs at courtside for players, coaches and other team personnel. The fifteen (15) minutes (not including introductions) warm-up time will begin immediately following the end of the preceding game. Coaches are advised to have their teams ready to warm-up at that time. The girls will use locker rooms A and B at the east end of the corridor and will play on the east court. The boys will use locker rooms C and D at the west end of the corridor and will play on the west court. Names of the schools will be posted outside the locker rooms. The home team on the east court will be seated on the left side of the scorer s table as you face the court; visiting team will be seated closest to the curtain. The home team on the west court will be seated on the right side of the scorer s table as you face the court; visiting team will be seated closest to the curtain. Teams must warm-up ONLY on their own half court each team should go to their respective bench first then to their own half court to warm-up (any team that runs through or around the opposing teams warm-ups will be assessed with a technical foul.) During introductions the team huddle must take place at each respective team end (not the center jump circle.) Players will be provided a souvenir water bottle and water will be located in the locker room. TOURNAMENT MERCHANDISE Game Plan Merchandising will have tournament apparel for sale throughout the tournament. PROGRAMS Each school will be provided two complimentary programs. Coaches will be asked to sign for these. Eighteen programs are available at the reduced rate of $5.00 each through the program 4

sellers on Wednesday only, if paid by cash, check or P.O.; additional programs will be $6.00 each. BANDS - NATIONAL ANTHEM The National Anthem will be played at the beginning of each day. The home team will have the first opportunity to perform the National Anthem according to the following schedule: boys home team on Wednesday, girls home team on Thursday, boys home team on Friday; girls home team on Saturday. The band director or soloist must check in with the floor manager at least twenty (20) minutes prior to game time. FILMING Platforms in sections 8A and 6A have been set aside for teams to film or videotape. Electrical outlets are available; extension cords are not provided. The individual filming for his/her school must be identified as the official school videographer. TOURNAMENT PHOTOGRAPHS Northwest Sports Photography will take team pictures before all games on Thursday. Cheerleaders pictures will be taken during half time on Thursday. Each school may make arrangements for individual photographs. SPORTSMANSHIP AWARDS Sportsmanship awards may be presented immediately following the team handshake after each game during the first three days of the tournament. FACILITY WALK-THROUGH The Tacoma Dome will be open for a walk-through on Tuesday, March 7, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. The Seattle Storm and team hosts will sponsor an ice cream social at the Best Western Tacoma Hotel, also from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. All Tacoma Dome parking lots are open at no charge during the team walk-through and ice cream social. COACHES CLINIC The Seattle Storm will offer a free clinic for all basketball coaches on Saturday, March 13, 2010, from 8:00 until 10:00 AM, at the Tacoma Dome. Enter the facility through the lower F pass gate. All participating coaches must exit the building following the clinic. GAME STATISTICS Half time and post game box scores will be distributed to coaches participating in that game, will be posted near the tournament bracket boards and in the press area, and posted on the internet at www.cybersportsusa.com. Tournament brackets are posted on the WIAA Web site at www.wiaa.com/tournamentbrackets/4a and will be updated after every game. TEAM HOSTS Each team will have local members of the Tacoma business community serve as team hosts. The team hosts will contact each coach directly and offer assistance as needed. 5

MEDICAL ASSISTANCE Apple Physical Therapy will provide athletic trainers and doctors at court side during every game. School athletic trainers must register on site with Apple Physical Therapy and are allowed on the bench only if within the team roster limit. If you have special needs please check with us in an appropriate time frame so that we may properly assist you. The following information is provided in order to make the experience more enjoyable for you and everyone at the event. DRAWS: The team draws and tournament schedule will be posted on the WIAA Web site at (wiaa.com) on Sunday, March 7. All games will be cybercast on cybersportsusa. Receive WIAA State basketball tournament final game scores on your cell phone! TACOMA DOME INFORMATION: Check the Tacoma Dome Web site at (tacomadome.org) for directions, a map of the facility and parking lots. PARKING is $8.00 per space per day. The public entrance is at the upper A or upper C concourses on the north and south sides of the Dome. With several concession options, no outside food may be brought into the facility. All bags are subject to search. Lodging and other area information is posted at (tacomasports.com). TICKET PRICES: Valid ASB card must be presented for student price; Ticket windows will open one hour prior to the first game time of the day. All Day (Wed/Thurs) All Day (Fri/Sat) All Tournament Adults/Students Without ASB Card $10 $11 $30 Students With Valid High School or Middle School ASB $8 $9 $24 Seniors Age 62 & Up $8 $9 $24 Children 5 & Under FREE FREE FREE WIAA TOURNAMENT POLICIES: * Artificial noisemakers are not allowed at any WIAA state event; only cheerleaders may use megaphones. * Helium balloons are not allowed into the facility. * Foam fingers, hand held pom-poms, and small hand-towel sized rally towels with professional printing approved by school administration (a sponsor name/logo on the hand towel is permissible provided it is secondary in size to the predominate school name/logo) are permissible. * Only the official school banner may be posted or in the stands; no other signs are allowed. * Individual schools determine if face painting will be allowed. * All fans must wear shirts at all times (attire appropriate for school functions is expected). * Fans will be allowed to wear paraphernalia during the WIAA state tournament games only if worn or carried in the hand of the spectator into the facility; Boxes/cases or large quantities carried in any manner of any such paraphernalia will not be allowed into the facility; Students will be responsible for properly disposing of such paraphernalia at the end of each contest. If additional personnel are required to clean up any mess resulting from the paraphernalia, the school will be billed for the cleanup. JUST PLAY FAIR! All participants as well as spectators are expected to demonstrate sportsmanship and respect toward opponents and tournament officials at all times. Sportsmanship medals may be awarded after each game. Spectators who demonstrate inappropriate conduct or actions may be removed from the facility. SOUVENIRS: Team and action photographs (4nsp.com), programs (wiaa.com), and tournament merchandise (gameplanstore.com) will be on sale throughout the tournament.
