200 ES Field Days PARACHUTE GAMES The students should sit around the parachute without touching it until one in charge gives the instructions. The parachute should be held by the edge, not by the handles, because the handles will rip or the children can pull a muscle more easily. No shoes should be allowed on the parachute, only socks or bare feet. The following activities work well in the order they are presented, but students may make suggestions and improvements to the following based on past class experiences. You may always add your very own creative game as well. MAKING WAVES Sitting, kneeling and then standing gently and then with increasing force move arms up and down making waves with the parachute. BOUNCING BALLS POPCORN : Add different size balls one at a time to the parachute while making waves. See how high the balls can bounce. Try to keep them from bouncing right off. TENT IGLOO : Everyone stands holding onto the parachute. On the count of three everyone raises their arms above their heads, pulls the parachute down behind them and then sits on their edge of the parachute. Everyone will be sitting inside what looks like a big dome while it slowly deflates around him or her. Note: It s fun to make a tent in order to explain the next game while everyone is sitting under the tent. TRADING/SWITCHING PLACES: One half of the circle is given numbers starting at one. The next half of the circle is given the same numbers. Each person should be sitting opposite the person with the same number If there is an uneven number of participants the highest number will have three people with that number. Everyone starts standing making waves. When leader calls a number, the two people with that number run under the waves and switch places. It is possible to call 2 numbers as long as the 5 aren t close to each other or else the parachute will be left dangling. Call numbers until everyone has had a chance to switch. CAT AND MOUSE TAG: Keeping the same numbers as the previous game, have 2 sets of numbers go under the parachute to be the mice (4 people). Have one set of numbers go on hands and knees on top of the parachute as cats (2 people). The rest of the people make waves to help hide the mice while the cats crawl through the waves trying to find the mice. When a mouse is tagged he/she comes out and joins the wave makers. After a few minutes or when all the mice have been found choose new mice and cats. JAWS: Two people (keeping the same number system works well) go under the parachute and become sharks. Two other people walk around the outside of the circle of people holding the parachute; they are the lifeguards. Everyone else sits on the ground with their legs straight out in front of them and the parachute pulled up to their waist. These people make waves while the sharks are under the waves grab the feet of unsuspecting people (swimmers) and try to pull them under the parachute. As soon as a swimmer feels a tug on their feet they start to call for the life guards who run around the outside of the circle, grab the victim under the arms and try to rescue them from being dragged under by the shark. If the lifeguard succeeds the shark goes on to another victim. If the shark succeeds he/she switches places with the victim. Continue for a few minutes and then switch the sharks and lifeguards with other people.

200 ES Field Days COOPERATIVE AND TEAM BUILDING ACTIVITIES & RING HOCKEY ACTIVITY COOPERATIVE AND TEAM BUILDING ACTIVITIES Set up two to four groups. If there are an uneven number of students, the first person in line should go twice. Everyone should have a chance to be the first one to start if possible and time permits. Cooperative Hoop Pass Challenge: (3 to 5 in a group) - Everybody holds hands - One end starts with a hoop in their hand - The group tries to move the hoop to the other side as quickly as possible - Last person raises the hoop in the air to declare successful completion of challenge. Ready-Aim-Forehead Cooperative Challenge: (2 per item in a group of 4 or 6) - Two participants face each other and place a balloon or any ball in between their foreheads. - They then run from one side to the other, then hand over to the next two players - These two hand the balloon to the next two in line. - Once finished, everyone sits down to complete the challenge. - If there are an uneven number of players the first person fills in. Cooperative Long Rope Challenge: (3 to 5 in a group) - Group stand in a straight line. - The rope has to pass through all the participants clothes (in and out of pants and in and out of sleeves) - The first group to pass the rope through all their team raises the rope above their heads to declare successful completion of challenge. Cooperative Centipede Walk Challenge: (Grades 3 & 4 ONLY!) - A member of the group finds a spot on the centipede picks up a rope and grabs on to it. - Working together, group walks to a pre-determined spot. - Group to reach spot, declares successful completion of challenge by sitting down in straight line. Cooperative Ball Pass: (3 to 5 in a group) - Pass ball to a group mate while standing in a line from front to back. - Last person on the line to get ball runs to the front and passing continues until group reaches a pre-determined spot. - Variations include over and under, through legs, side to side, with legs stretched out and overhead.

Note: With each of the next races, an exercise can be added at the far end of the relay, i.e. at the cone do 5 jumping jacks or 3 sit-ups or 5 push-ups. Ball on Chin Race: Basic relay while holding a ball or soft object below chin. Zigzag Race: - Form two groups and have them stand in a straight line with one or more steps space in between them. - One runner starts and zigzags through the whole line and remains in place. The same time, next runner on the line begins to zigzag and so on. - When finished, everyone sits down to finish race. Sack Race: (Grade -4) - First person in line steps into the sack - On the go signal he or she hops to and around the cone to come back and hand over the sack to the next person in line. - The player who has already hopped sits down. - The first team that has everyone sitting down wins the race. - If there are an uneven number of players the first person goes twice Potato Race: - The team is split up into two sides, one half opposite the other - The first player in line places a potato or any object between his or her knees - The aim is to move to the other side without dropping the potato - At the other side another player will take over the potato and go back - Once a player has had a turn he or she sits down - The first team that has everyone sitting down wins the relay Dizzy Relay: - Form two groups and have them stand in a straight line. - One member runs up to the opposite end and place their forehead on a bat while twisting around a specified number of times. - Runners return and tap hand of those next in line and then sit down. Dress Up & Take off Relay: (Grades K-2) - The first person in line runs past 4 cones - Each cone has an item of sports clothing - The runner has to put these clothes on in order - From the last cone the person has to run to a big cone and around it - Once he or she is on the way back they take off their sports clothing in order - They then tap the next person in line and sit down - The first team that has everyone sitting down, wins the relay - If there are an uneven number of players the first person will have to go twice Grocery List Relay: (K) - The first in line runs to the first piece of grocery, picks it up and runs to the cone - At the cone is a shopping bag, in which the grocery should be placed

- The runner then sits down behind the grocery bag - Once the grocery is put in the bag, the next runner can leave to pick up the next piece of grocery, etc Spoon Relay: - The team is split up into two sides, one half stands opposite the other half about 0 meters apart. - The first player in line places a ping pong ball on a spoon - The aim is to move to the other side without dropping the ball - At the other side another player will take over the spoon and go back - Once a player has had a turn he or she sits down - The first team that has everyone sitting down wins the relay Block Stacking Relay: - Players run from one side to designated area where they will stack one block and return - All the players in the line follow, taking turns, until full stack is completed. - Blocks lay in hoop. Stacking will be on top of a crate. Additional Relays: Skipping relay: Each person skips down around the cone and back. The next person goes. Bear walk. Running on hands and feet down to the other end and back. Crab walk. Bunny hop. Hop on right foot down and left foot back: there are many variations that can be done if you want to think some up Jump ropes. Run skipping the rope down to the other end and back. After one turn, runners hand off the rope to the next person waiting in line. RING HOCKEY ACTIVITY Activity takes place in cordoned area with benches in the middle. Equipment used includes rings, plain sticks, cones and balls. Object is to slide rings under the bench with the use of the stick with or without aiming for a target. Variations include: random placement of targets, restricted movement (targets in no person's land), attackers & defenders, throwing with yarn ball in stead of sliding with rings, kicking. Targets can also be placed in the back of the courts in no man's land. Team helpers can be placed in no man's land to return balls.
