UNCBears.com University of Northern Colorado 2005-06 Men s Golf Weekly Release This Week s Match 2006 Ron Moore Invitational Palm Valley Golf Course - Goodyear, Ariz. March 20-21, 2006 Hosted by the University of Denver This Week The University of Northern Colorado men s golf team opens its spring season on Monday and Tuesday when they take part in the 2006 Ron Moore Invitational, hosted by the University of Denver and held at the Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Ariz. The Bears will be competing against a field that includes host Denver, Air Force, Colorado State, Iowa State, Kansas, No. 39 Louisville, Louisiana Monroe, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico JV, Southern Utah, Utah, UTEP, defending champion Wichita State and Wyoming. Last year at the event, the Bears finished second overall behind Wichita State, who was an amazing 37 strokes better than the Bears and the rest of the field. Chris Ellis finished fifth individually for the Bears. Last Time Out In the Bears last event of the fall season, held in November, senior Tim Knight shot a final round 68 (-4) and finished tied for first with Xavier s John Streibich, the No. 83-ranked collegiate golfer in the country, as the University of Northern Colorado men s golf team finished seventh at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate hosted by New Mexico State. After an even-par round on Monday to start the tournament, Knight had rounds of 69 and 68 to finish in a tie for first after regulation play. Knight produced his best collegiate finish in a major tournament and helped the Bears team jump from 10th to seventh in the final team standings. There they finished in a tie with Miami (Ohio) and the New Mexico State J.V. squad. The Bears were only three strokes out of fifth place, which was held by Arizona. Xavier, ranked No. 38 nationally, won the team title by 10 strokes over UT-Arlington. Sophomore Tom Gempel finished 43rd (+7), junior Eric Higgins was 48th (+8), freshman Jordan Ensrud was 53rd (+9) and freshman Derek Hofmeister was 80th (+28) for the Bears. Bears to Host Division I Independent Championships Northern Colorado will host the men s and women s 2006 Division I Independent Golf Championships April 28-30 at Pelican Lakes Golf and Country Club in Windsor. Eight men s teams will vie for the tournament title which is being held for the first time. The men s field includes Francis Marion, North Dakota State, Sacramento State, South Dakota State, Texas- Pan American, Utah Valley State and Weber State. National Rankings In the latest Golfweek national rankings (March 12), Northern Colorado is ranked 108th nationally out of 281 total Division I teams. The Bears were ranked 99th at the end of the fall season. Next Up The Bears will compete at Stanford s U.S. Intercollegiate on April 14-15 in California.
