If school closes, the district stops plowing the road from the school down to the Center. So, if you are traveling to the DACC and school is closed, choose another route. Because we care about our members and our staff, it is sometimes necessary to close early or open late. These unscheduled closures will be posted on our website and on Facebook. There will also be a message on our phone. Morning Fitness Classes (classes beginning before 11:00 am) will be cancelled if school is cancelled. If there is a two-hour delay, regular classes will begin at 11:00 am. If in doubt, please call the DACC at 275-3001.

A Community Center Project Perhaps you didn't know that when you enter the DACC you are swimming among, exercising in the midst of, and hanging out with some of the area s finest bakers and chefs. If you have never sampled Iva Rudy s blueberry cake, you have missed one of life s best experiences. This book - compiled by all of us - will gather recipes made from fresh ingredients whenever possible, recipes passed from one generation to another, recipes for 30 minute meals and holiday celebrations, and recipes from family and friends. Please contribute at least one of your favorites to our Community Center project! Jean Knouse Tina Bartholomew and Iva Rudy are the Co-Chairs for this exciting project. This 2015 publication will also be filled with DACC info, personal messages, notes of support, a patron list and many more interesting bits of information. The absolute, last day to submit information for publication is Sept. 15th, so please visit the website for the forms to submit if you would like to participate in this project. Pickleball Pickleball is a paddle sport created for all ages and skill levels. The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players. The Basics 1. A fun sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. 2. Played both indoors or outdoors on a badminton-sized court and a slightly modified tennis net. 3. Played with a paddle and a plastic ball. Pickleball Courts are available Mon through Fri from Noon until 2:00 pm for now. There is no additional fee for members. If the demand is great, a sign-up sheet will be developed. You may use your own Pickleball equipment or you may borrow equipment at the front desk. Official Pickleball racquets and balls are required. Sneakers are also required. Brief History Pickleball was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, a short ferry ride from Seattle, WA. Three dads Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum whose kids were bored with their usual summertime activities are credited for creating the game. Pickleball has evolved from original hand-made equipment and simple rules into a popular sport throughout the US and Canada. The game is growing internationally as well with many European and Asian countries adding courts. 6

DACC Learn-to-Swim Program SWIM LESSON GOALS #1: Safety in and around the water #2: Proficiency in lap swimming #3: FUN!! The DACC Swim Lesson Program operates on a monthly basis from September through May The DACC Learn-to Swim Levels Intro to Swimming: This class is for children who are at least three years old. Skills to be learned include paddling with hands, proper kicking, slipping into and climbing out of the water, submersing head, and floating. Level I: Skills at Level I include jumping into the water, paddling and reaching, floating for 10 seconds without a belt, and demonstrating the elementary backstroke and breast stroke (arms only). Level II: Belts are not encouraged at this level. Skills learned at Level II include the elementary backstroke, traditional backstroke, and rhythmic breathing for the American crawl. Also at this level, the basics of jumping and diving are taught and swimmers learn to jump into deep water, push off the bottom and then push to the top (a very important skill). Swimmers work on floating for longer periods of time. Level III: Swimmers will work on refining the backstroke, elementary backstroke, American crawl, and breaststroke. Diving, treading water, and jumping in and pushing off the bottom to a floating position are emphasized. Students begin to work on developing endurance. Level IV and Stroke Clinic: Stroke refinement and technique are the primary lessons at this level. Swimmers begin endurance work. 10 If you know a child who should be taking swim lessons and whose parents are unable to provide classes (at all levels) because of a financial need, please contact us. Our annual United Way allocation provides for memberships and because they are so important swim lessons!
