SWIM SCHOOL TIMES BRUCE S WATER SAFETY TIPS #13 Learn how to resuscitate. #14 Walk don t run when in and around an aquatic venue. RIPPLES ST MARYS Charles Hackett Drive ST MARYS 2760 Tel: 9833 3000 SWIM STUDY FLOATS SWIM BENEFITS Thanks to the Early Years Swimming Study, we in Australia have officially known for several years, learning to swim from a young age and regularly, can help kids not only become safer and stronger, but smarter; the study found swimming can help children to develop physical, cognitive and social skills faster than those who do not have lessons. However, now a report funded by Swim England, has revealed the unique benefits of water making it the perfect place for people of all ages to exercise - particularly those with long term health conditions; regular swimming also helps older people stay mentally and physically fit. It s also claimed, swimmers live longer I ll say that again swimmers live longer. It added that swimming can lower the risk of early death by 28 per cent, and lower the risk of death due to heart disease and stroke by 41 per cent. One of the greatest elements of this study is that it shows, from grassroots to green pastures, swimming is the sport and hobby for all of us! But more importantly, learning to swim from a young age can not only help children develop more quickly than those who aren t exposed to swimming, but can make them safer in and around water; and who doesn t want to reduce drowning deaths across the world?! RIPPLES PENRITH 119 Station Street PENRITH 2750 Tel: 4721 3625 Email ltsadmin@ripplesnsw.com.au Website www.ripplesnsw.com.au Follow us on: There were 29 drowning deaths in children aged 0-4 years and 12 drowning deaths in children aged 5-14 years at aquatic locations across Australia between 1 July 2016 and 30 June 2017. This is an increase of 7 drowning deaths for 0-4 years old (or 32%) on last year s total of 22 drowning deaths. Swimming pools (including home and public pools) were the leading location for drowning among this age group, accounting for almost half (45%) of all deaths, there was a 13% decrease against the 10 year average. Although a 75% increase was recorded in the number of children under five drowning in bathtubs and spa baths. Just over three-quarters of drowning deaths in children under five resulted from a fall into water (76%), while a further 24% drowned while bathing thus reinforcing the need to be vigilant in actively supervise children at all times in and around water as well teaching them swimming and water safety skills from a young age.
