BREN ARENA 3 p.m. (ET) ORANGE COUNTY CLASH Western Michigan faces Illinois State in the opening game of the Orange County Clash, hosted by UC-Irvine. The Broncos will then face UCI or UNC-Greensboro on Monday in either the consolation or championship game of the clash. The Anteaters and Spartans play Sunday following the WMU vs. ISU matchup. REGULAR SEASON TOURNAMENTS This is the fifth season Western Michigan has participated in at least two regular season tournaments or classics. The Broncos went 1-1 earlier this season at the Iona Thanksgiving Classic, falling to UMBC (81-69) and defeating Iona (54-44). WMU is 5-17 in regular season tournament games dating from this season back to the 2004-05 season. The Broncos have been crowned the winner of just one of those 11 tournaments, picking up wins over UTPA (95-77) and Air Force (71-54) two years ago at the Air Force Classic. BACK IN CALI This is the second-straight season Western Michigan has made the trip to California, last year competing in the San Diego Surf N Slam Tournament at San Diego State, Dec. 28 & 30. The Broncos fell in both games, 85-80 to Seton Hall, and 77-72 to San Diego State. BRONCOS VS. REDBIRDS Western Michigan is 4-9 all-time against Illinois State, but is on a two-game winning streak against the Redbirds. The two schools last faced off in 2003-04, with WMU winning 79-57, and played each other the season before in which the Brown & Gold posted a 100-79 win. ON THE ROAD AGAIN WMU is on the road four straight games, traveling to North Carolina for a pair of games after its two-game stint in California. The next home match-up will be the Mid-American Conference opener against Toledo, Jan. 7. LAST TIME OUT Western Michigan women s basketball stopped a two-game skid with its first home win of the season, 72-63, over Chicago State on Dec. 18. The Broncos had their highest point total of the season in the victory as Miame Giden recorded the second double-double of her young career, posting 20 points and 11 boards, both career highs. MILESTONE CHECK Senior Tiera DeLaHoussaye is closing in on 1,000 career points and is looking to become the 21st player in WMU history to reach the milestone. Currently, she has 966 points and is averaging over 12 points a game. With 480 career points, junior Sara Vest is just 20 points from reaching 500. MOVIN ON UP With two steals against Chicago State, Tiera DeLaHoussaye collected her 274th career take-away and surpassed Shelly Klare (273 steals, 1984-87) to move into second place on WMU s all-time thievery list. In passing Klare, DeLaHoussaye also moved into 15th on the Mid-American Conference career steals list. Maria Jilian (2002-06) holds WMU s record with 364 career steals, ranking second all-time in the MAC. GIDEN THE OFFENSE Freshman forward Miame Giden scored in double figures seven of the eight games this season and was the Broncos top scorer in five of those. Drake was able to do something no other opponent has been able to do, holding Giden scoreless (0-for-5 shooting) on Dec. 14. Giden leads the team in scoring (13.7 ppg) and rebounding (6.8 rpg). DOMINATING THE GLASS Western Michigan has outrebounded its opponent in five of the last six contests. The Broncos have a + 9.3 rebounding margin in that span, averaging 42.0 boards a game while foes are pulling in 32.7 rpg. PROBABLE BRONCO STARTERS Pos. No. Name Ht. WESTERN MICHIGAN WOMEN S BASKETBALL SCOUTING ILLINOIS STATE 2008-09 Record: 6-3 2007-08 Record: 26-7, 13-5 Missouri Valley (T-1st) Head Coach (season): Robin Pingeton Illinois State is riding a four-game win streak, dating back to Dec. 3. The Redbirds are 3-0 against Mid-American Conference opponents this year, defeating Ball State (91-68), Eastern Michigan (83-47) and Northern Illinois (89-67) in their last outing on Dec. 15. Three players average double figures for ISU, led by Kristi Cirone with 16.9 points per game. She has made a teamhigh 19 three s this season and is shooting over 46 percent from behind the arc. She also leads the team in free throws made (19), assists (51) and steals (19). SWEATER IS BETTER Junior forward Sara Vest scored in double figures for the first time this season against Drake, dropping in 12 points. The majority of those were generated at the free-throw line, were she shot 8-for-11. Vest pulled down a game-high eight rebounds vs. Drake and collected a career-high three steals. LOOK AT LONEY Junior Jenny Loney has emerged as a steady contributor for Western Michigan this season. Averaging just over four minutes of playing time a game the last two seasons, Loney is seeing about 18 minutes of action in 2008-09. Her 33 points through eight games is just five off her total offensive production last year (38) and surpasses her point total from her freshman season (30). She currently averages 4.1 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. A threat from the outside, the 6-1 guard leads the team in three-pointers made and (7-for-20). TAKE TEN Ebony Cleary s 10 rebounds against UIC was her second double-digiit rebounding effort of the season and the eighth of her career. Earlier this season, Cleary posted a double-double against Saint Louis with 10 points and 10 rebounds. DELAHOUSSAYE, GIDEN EARN HONORS Senior Tiera DeLaHoussaye and freshman Miame Giden were named to the All-Classic Team at the Iona Thanksgiving Classic after both averaging over 13 points and six-plus rebounds in two games against UMBC (11/29) and Iona (11/30). WELL TRAVELED WMU s schedule consists of 29 games, 11 of which are at home, and two non-conference regular-season tournaments. December is Western Michigan s most taxing part of its schedule, as the first five contests are on the road and WMU is away for seven of eight games. MONEY IN THE BANK Brenna Banktson s 22 points against Saint Louis set a new career high for the 5-10 sophomore forward. Her previous high was 21 against Ohio on Feb. 2, 2008. On the way to 22 points, she made eight field goals, which also was a career high. Going 3-for-5 for long range, she tied her career best for three s in a game. McDOWELL AT THE HELM Former Wisconsin assistant Tasha McDowell became the fifth head coach in Western Michigan s history on April 19, 2008. McDowell is in her 12th year of coaching and has also had stops as an assistant at UC-Santa Barbara, Bradley, Dayton and her alma mater, St. Ambrose. McDowell s staff at WMU includes Yvette Harris, Glenn Box, Phil Sayers and Lindsey Hass. For a complete bio on McDowell, see page four. BRIGHT FUTURE A youthful, but experienced, 2008-09 Western Michigan squad features just two seniors in Tiera DeLaHoussaye and Arianne Wilson. There are five juniors, three sophomores and five freshmen rostered. 2007-08 REVIEW The Broncos concluded 2007-08 with an overall record of 13-19, and went 9-7 in MAC. Ranking first in the MAC West for much of the year, Western Michigan was in contention for the division title until the final week of the regular season, in which it would place third. The Brown & Gold won six of first seven MAC games and had three more total conference wins than 2006-07. In the MAC Tournament, WMU defeated Akron, 84-54, in the first round before losing to eventual champion Miami in the quarterfinals, 65-60. DELAHOUSSAYE NAMED PRESEASON ALL-MAC For the second-straight season point guard Tiera DeLaHoussaye has been named Preseason All-MAC. DeLaHoussaye is the reigning MAC Defensive Player of the Year and was a First Team All MAC selection a year ago. She ranked third in the nation in assists (7.8) and 10th in steals (3.3) in 2007-08, and has ranked in the top 15 in the country in both categories the past two seasons. She was also one of 52 players from Division I to be named as an All-American regional finalist. DeLaHoussye led WMU in scoring (12.4), assists and steals, while ranking second in rebounding (6.1) last season. IN A LEAGUE OF HER OWN DeLaHoussaye collected an unprecedented six MAC Player of the Week awards in 2007-08, the most ever by a single player in a single season. Three others had received the award five times - Buffalo s Tiffany Bell and Kent State s Julie Studer (both in 2000-01) and WMU s Kristin Koestier (1999-2000). WESTERN MICHIGAN REMEMBERS FRAN EBERT Western Michigan remembers Fran Ebert, who passed away this November. Ebert was the first head basketball coach in WMU history and coached for 18 seasons, retiring in 1982. Ebert amassed a career record of 186-113, winning three state Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) championships and three runner-up finishes in the state. Ebert was inducted into the WMU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1986 and Mid- American Conference Hall of Fame in 1992. Ebert was also the head softball coach at Western Michigan for nine years after founding the program in 1976. She won 69.9 percent of her games with a career record of 270-116-1, including two trips to the 1980 and 1981 AIAW World Series and the 1982 NCAA College World Series. The Broncos finished fourth in 1980, ninth in 1981 and fifth in 1982. Ebert ed the Broncos to the 1984 MAC championship. In recognition of her contributions, the softball field was renamed in her honor, Fran Ebert Field, in 1985.

WESTERN MICHIGAN WOMEN S BASKETBALL HEAD COACH TASHA MCDOWELL COACHING CAREER University of Wisconsin, Assistant Coach, 2005 08 UC-Santa Barbara, Assistant Coach, 2001 05 Bradley University, Assistant Coach, 2000 01 University of Dayton, Assistant Coach, 1998 2000 St. Ambrose University, Assistant Coach, 1997 98 EDUCATION Bachelor s degree in mathematics, St. Ambrose University, 1997 PLAYING CAREER St. Ambrose University (1996 97) Southwest Missouri State University (1995-96) Illinois Central College (1993 95) Western Michigan announced the hiring of former University of Wisconsin assistant Tasha McDowell as the Broncos head women s basketball coach on April 19, 2008. McDowell brings 11 years of coaching experience, including the last three as the defensive coordinator with the Badgers. McDowell comes to Western Michigan from Wisconsin, where she had served as an assistant for the past three years under head coach Lisa Stone. At UW, McDowell was the premier development coach, defensive coordinator and co-coordinator of recruiting. She worked closely with and helped develop one Kodak/WBCA All-American and four players who went on to play professionally overseas. During the 2006-07 season, McDowell helped the Badgers set a program record with 23 wins (23-13), as Wisconsin made it first post-season appearance since 2002. The Badgers posted a 4-1 record and were the runner-up champions of the WNIT, losing at Wyoming, 72-56, in the championship. Prior to her appointment at Wisconsin, McDowell was an assistant coach at UC-Santa Barbara from 2000-2005. McDowell served as the Gauchos recruiting coordinator and was also responsible for coaching the UCSB defense, helping coordinate the offense in her final season. In addition, she served as the team s community outreach coordinator and was in charge of guard development. She worked directly with one player who went on to play in the WNBA and a second who played overseas. Coming off an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance in 2004, the Gauchos finished the 2004-05 campaign with a 21-9 record, and made the NCAA Tournament for the ninth consecutive year and 11th time in program history. The Big West Conference champion for the 10th year, UCSB garnered a No. 13 seed in the Tempe Regional, and lost 61-51 to Notre Dame in the first round. Prior to her job at Santa Barbara, she was the second assistant at Bradley University in Peoria, Ill., where she aided in the Braves recruiting efforts. She also spent two seasons at the University of Dayton, helping the Flyers record their first winning campaign in six years and advance to the 2000 postseason WNIT. McDowell began her coaching career as an assistant at St. Ambrose in 1997. A native of Rock Island, Ill., McDowell has strong Midwestern roots and is a 1997 graduate of St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa, with a degree in mathematics. McDowell played four years of collegiate basketball, the first two of which were spent at Illinois Central College. After graduating from ICC, McDowell attended Southwest Missouri State before transferring to St. Ambrose. In her lone season with the Queen Bees, the team posted a 27-7 record and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament. A point guard, McDowell averaged 13.4 points, 5.1 assists and 3.6 steals as a senior, all team highs. WMU QUICK FACTS Location... Kalamazoo, Mich.
