MANX MODEL BOAT CLUB NEWSLETTER June 2018 Hi All, Welcome to your June newsletter. The summer sailing season is now well under way with a number of events already completed and several important events coming up in the next month or so. I have included a couple of reports from completed events kindly provided by Brian King. Unfortunately the tug towing didn t go ahead due to the weather, and we hope to reschedule this for later in the year. The main event at the end of this month is the Mannanan Regatta on 23 rd & 24 th June. Please see later in this newsletter for full details of the event. I have also attached a poster produced by Kim Holland to help advertise the event and a copy of the Mannanan dinner reply slip which needs to be completed and returned along with your payment. Don t forget that this is your club, so if you have any ideas of anything you would like including in the calendar then please shout up so that we can have a look and see what can be fitted in. The same applies for any articles you would like to see or submit for inclusion in the newsletter. Please e-mail me with any items you might have. Regular club sailing will continue at Silverdale on Sunday mornings starting at 10am on days when we don t have another event scheduled. You can always find information about the boat club on the website www.manxmodelboatclub.org. Happy Sailing, Jason Quayle GDPR You may have seen a lot of discussion in the media in recent weeks about the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR). These are a set of European regulations which set out enhanced safeguards as to how organisations collect, hold and process personal data and information. As a club we need gather an amount of information about our members such 1

As a member you tick a box on your annual membership form which confirms that you agree to the club holding information about you, and as a club we give an undertaking that we will only use your information for the purposes of conducting club business. In order to consistently set out how we use members data, we have introduced a Data Protection Policy. This policy is attached to this newsletter for your information and will also be made available on the club web site. We should emphasise that this policy has been put together at relatively short notice and may need updating as we understand more about our obligations under GDPR. 2018 Fixture List Sunday 10 th June 2018 Sunday 17 th June 2018 Saturday 23 rd June 2018 Sunday 24 th June 2018 Big Night Out event for the larger models in the club. We hope to hire a van to transport models to the show and put on a display similar to what we have previously done at the Warwick show, but on a slightly smaller scale. We will have further details to make available as we get closer to the show, but if you are thinking of attending then members are looking to travel to Heysham on the Steam Packet either on Thursday evening 18 th October or Friday morning 19 th October. Setting up at the venue will be on the Friday afternoon with the show open to the public on the Saturday and Sunday. Members are generally booking accommodation at the Bispham Premier Inn which is a couple of miles away from the show venue at the Norbreck Castle. We will start to put plans together about how we set up the display as we get closer to the date, but if you would like to attend and bring a model along them please let me know so that we can fit it in. All models will have to be securely boxed if they are travelling in the van. 3

Steering Competition At long last a lovely day for a club competition. With hardly a breath of wind and the sun breaking through, it looked as though a great morning was in the offing, and so it proved. With 3 helpers already there when I turned up just before 9 o clock, it was a combined effort to have all ready by 10.o clock. Jason Fleming had left the gear for us as promised and Mike Kelly and I worked out a course between us on the spur of the moment. Simple but very effective as it turned out! Billy had taken the entries while the course was being assembled, with 6 in the Under 1 metre [but over 600mm], 3 in the under 600mm, and 3 in the over 1 metre. Not a huge field but enough to call it a competition. The under 1 metre was first off, with yours truly first off to show the course with the Cygnus. While having a good run, I still made a couple of mistakes to lose 2 marks. Jason Quayle was next off with his Fairy Huntsman. He fairly extruded confidence going around at speed, but he also had 2 touches. Dave Costain was next with his fishing boat which failed to start at first but after running repairs he was on his way. [He did not know what he did, but it worked!] He had 3 touches and went outside a buoy so lost 8 points. Brian Swinden was next with his twin engine lifeboat and despite some weird engine noises at low speed, he managed a clear round. Norman was next out with his small cargo boat and started off out off touch, due to not having sailed the boat over the last year. By the time he was half way round he was gaining confidence and tearing round! Unfortunately, he lost 17 points and Kyrill fared similarly to lose 18 points. Brian Swinden s clear round took the honours. Envoy tug being sailed by Jason Quayle in the Steering Competition 4

In the under 600mm Brian Swinden was first off with his small tug and got around with a loss of six points. I was next off with my lobster boat Manxman. Unfortunately, I did not get far as the battery failed and I had to abort. Just then Peter Iddon turned up and was persuaded [conned] into using Brian s tug and having a go. It was an interesting experiment! However, he did get finish, losing 12 points, making Brian the winner. Next up was the Over 1 metre class with 3 competitors. Mike Kelly was first off with his new large tug. [35 years old and in the refurbishment stage.] He had problems due to the power available overcoming the small rudder. He did get most of the way round before aborting after losing 12 points. Jason was next with his Envoy tug, and he got round for a loss of 3 points. I was next with my Wendy Ann and after a false start with a jammed rudder, got going successfully to finish losing 7 points, mainly due a 5 after going the wrong way round the icebergs. So Jay took first place. After a cracking morning, Jay took to the pedallo to collect the buoys before we all made our way home. Thanks to John W s son Paul for taking the gear back. Valkarie being sailed by Norman Cadwallader in the Steering Competition 5

Big Night Out This is a new event for this year which due to be held on Sunday evening 10 th June at Onchan park (immediately after TT week). The event starts at 6:30pm, but arrive early to get a parking space for unloading the big models. The event celebrates the return to service of HMS Illustrious which has been restored during the winter by Mike Kelly. The model was originally built by member Keith Jewell but was then donated to the club when Keith & Shareen moved off the island in the early 2000 s. Unfortunately due to its size the model has rarely been seen on the water and has sat in storage for many years until Mike offered to clean it up and get it running again. The event is intended to be a run out for all the Big models within the club which despite being awkward to transport and store look extremely impressive once they are launched on the water. Don t worry if you don t have a Big model. Just bring along the largest model you own and have a sail with the club. 6

Fleetwood Marblehead Vintage / Classic Championships This was not first time I had entered these championships but it was the best for weather in a dozen years. I arrived at Fleetwood Friday lunchtime, to find Gareth and Liz had already arrived but as the wind was still fresh although given to drop the next day, we both decided not to do a test run so it was inside the Fleetwood MBC clubhouse to assemble our yachts ready for the next day. We were made very welcome and could help ourselves in the adjoining kitchen! I joined Liz and Gareth in the North Euston for a lovely evening meal and a gorgeous evening sunset looking over to the Island. When I got down to the clubhouse in the morning, all the other competitors were arriving also. Racing started at 10.30 am. Each competitor was to race against everybody else on an individual basis, up and then down, called a board. As there were so many competitors 8 boards were to be raced on Saturday and 7 on Sunday, There were 3 points for the upwind beat and 2 for downwind. The wind was spot on at around 10 knots and gloriously sunny. There was only 1 other boat Braine steered and that was a modern build on an old design and using modern sails and fitting. All the other boats were to later designs and using vane steering. I was the old man of the fleet! Gareth had a more modern boat than I with vane steering. We both spent some time experimenting with our sails as neither of us had sailed properly for nearly a year but we completed all our boards on our first day with the occasional win. The lake was purpose built for yachts with a length of 300 yds and a width of 30 yds. So, for each board we all walked at least 600 yds. By the end of day one we had all individually walked around 3 miles and more. Some of it was at a jog the boats were flying downwind! We didn t finish till gone 5.0pm so we were ready for the evening meal laid on at the North Euston. I slept well. Next day and the weather was exactly the same so we got off to a good start without having to reset our sails. Both Gareth and I had our boats set up much better and we gave our respective competitors some close racing and some more wins. Racing finished just after 4.0pm and the results were announced and the trophies presented. Neither I nor Gareth were among the winners but we had both shown our metal and had a fantastic and memorable 2 days. Mention must be made of the Fleetwood MBC s clubhouse which is a wonderful facility right alongside the lake. Although old fashioned the clubhouse comprises a small viewing area, 7

main meeting area, kitchen and boat storage for around 50 boats, all lined up in rows with sail lockers! Most of the yachts were radio controlled, many of them around 6 ft in length, based on the old classic boat hulls. There have regular sailing days, and a good scale power section. What a facility! Commodores Challenge 2018 Sunday 29 th April saw the first practice session for this year s Commodore s challenge which is tethered boats running in our small pool. A number of skippers were present with this years challengers ready for this first trial. It was nice to see Peter Iddon on the island again with his duck which sailed remarkably well. I have posted some more video of the first practice session on You Tube if anybody would like to see how the trials got on. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efltm3ov8kq A number of skippers were not quite as successful and needed to go away to make adjustments to their challengers. We have therefore decided to hold another practice event on Sunday morning 17 th June at Silverdale to see if the adjustment have worked! The full event will be held as part of the Mannanan Regatta on Saturday 23 rd June and Sunday 24 th June along with running last years Pop-Pop boats again. If you are interested in building a challenger then you can find a copy of the rules on the club web site. http://www.manxmodelboatclub.org/boatclub/commodore.html 8

Mannanan Regatta 2018 The format for this years event has now been confirmed as follows; Saturday 23 rd June Free sailing on the lake in the morning followed by the On the Water competition in the afternoon. The On the Water competition will be run as a mass participation event with everybody sailing at the same time and the judging taking place over the space of an allocated hour. Any model sailing during the hour may be judged as part of the competition. If you have more than one model then spend 20 minutes sailing one model and then change to another model. At the same time we will have the small pool set up on the side of the lake for practice runs of the Commodores Challenge to include both the tethered models and Pop Pop boats. Sunday 24 th June Free sailing on the lake in the morning whilst the Static Scale competition is judged on the side of the lake. At the same time we will have the small pool set up again for more practice runs of the Commodores Challenge. The actual Commodores Challenge will take place in the afternoon. The final event of the weekend will be the usual fun floats competition. Please note that we are not taking names in advance for the competitions, but you will need to register when you first arrive in the morning. I have attached a copy of the poster which Kim has very kindly produced for the event along with the dinner reply slip which we need returning along with your payment as soon as possible. Further details can be found on the club web site. http://www.manxmodelboatclub.org/boatclub/mannanan.html Tree Carving Regular members sailing at Silverdale will have noticed a recent tree carving which has appeared alongside Roy s bench. Whilst the carving is very nice and adds interest to the lakeside scene, we couldn t help notice a resemblance to somebody we know! 9
