To do so, the Flames will have to snap Jacksonville State's streak of 32 consecutive regular-season triumphs against non-fbs opponents. 3) The Flames' early-season success has been fueled by a high-powered offense. Liberty is averaging 49.3 ppg and 536.0 ypg, including 384.3 through the air. 4) Liberty QB Stephen "Buckshot" Calvert has won two Big South Offensive Player of the Week awards already this season. He has thrown for 1,107 yards in three games while completing 70 percent of his passes and throwing 12 TDs to just one INT. 5) WR Antonio Gandy-Golden has been Calvert's favorite target. Gandy-Golden, who grew up just over an hour from Jacksonville State's campus in Dallas, Ga., is coming off of a 7-catch, 171-yard outburst against Indiana State. 6) Redshirt junior S Corbin Jackson was named Big South Special Teams Player of the Week after blocking a potential game-winning FG on the final play of Liberty's 42-41 win over Indiana State. The Gamecocks are playing their first home game since suffering a 40-24 loss to Youngstown State in the 2016 FCS second round on Dec. 3, 2016. Interestingly, Jacksonville State has already had two bye weeks during the 2017 season, coming on the weekends of Sept. 2 and Sept. 16. Saturday's 2 game will mark Liberty's second visit to Burgess-Snow Field but its first since Oct. 17, 1981. The Flames have only played four games in Alabama in program history and none since a 35-28 loss at Samford on Oct. 30, 1999. John Grass has done an exceptional job in three-plus seasons as Jacksonville State's head coach. He owns a 34-7 record, with the only seven losses coming to Power Five opponents (Auburn, Georgia 3 Tech, LSU and Michigan State) and inside the FCS Playoffs. The Gamecocks have posted convincing victories in each of their three previous meetings with the Flames, including a 64-0 home win on Oct. 17, 1981, a 42-13 victory in Lynchburg on Sept. 25, 1982 and a 48-19 triumph in Lynchburg on Sept. 24, 2016. It has been four years since Jacksonville State has either suffered a regular-season home loss (Oct. 12, 2013 vs. Tennessee State) or an OVC defeat (Nov. 4 16, 2013 vs. Eastern Illinois). Since then, the Gamecocks have won 17 straight regular-season home games and 24 consecutive OVC contests. Jacksonville State has also recorded 32 straight regular-season wins against non-fbs opponents since its Nov. 16, 2013 setback to Eastern Illinois. LAST MEETING WITH JACKSONVILLE STATE SEPT. 24, 2016 NO. 3/4 JACKSONVILLE STATE 48, LIBERTY 19 LYNCHBURG, VA. (WILLIAMS STADIUM) Jacksonville State outgained Liberty, 563-181, led by the duo of QB Eli Jenkins (14-22 passing for 224 yards and 2 TDs, 18 carries for 121 yards and 2 TDs) and RB Roc Thomas (14 carries for 111 yards and a TD). The Gamecocks scored on runs of 87 and 76 yards, passes of 69 and 51 yards and a 75-yard punt return. Liberty QB Stephen Calvert came off the bench to throw for 125 yards, highlighted by a 59-yard TD strike to Dante Shells. A Liberty Win Would... Enable the Flames to open the season at 4-0 for the first time since 2008 and the fifth time in program history (also 1989, 1990 and 1997). Give the Flames their first-ever victory over Jacksonville State and their inaugural triumph in the state of Alabama. Mark the Flames' first triumph over an OVC opponent since Sept. 22, 1990 against Morehead State, snapping Liberty's five-game losing streak against conference members. Make the Flames 7-10 all-time against OVC opponents. Improve the Flames' record against FCS Top 25 opponents to 8-11 under Turner Gill. Mark the Flames' third all-time win over an FCS Top 5 foe (previously vs. Coastal Carolina in 2014 and 2015). Give the Gamecocks their first regular-season home loss since Oct. 12, 2013 (Tennessee State). 2017 UNIFORM TRACKER The Liberty football program is outfitted by Nike and has 27 different helmet/jersey/pants combinations to choose from during the 2017 season. The 2014 and 2015 victories over Coastal Carolina mark Liberty's only two wins over FCS Top 5 foes alltime. The 2017 season will also serve as Liberty s 16th and final season as a member of the Big South Conference. Liberty was one of four charter members in the Big South when the league started to sponsor football in 2002 (along with Charleston Southern, Elon and Gardner-Webb). During his previous five seasons at Liberty, Flames Head Coach Turner Gill has led the Flames to a Big South title four times (2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016) and its first-ever NCAA FCS Playoff appearance in 2014 (advancing to the second round). Liberty is off to its first 3-0 start since the 2008 season and for the seventh time in program history (also in 1975, 1989, 1990, 1993, 1997 and 2008). Should Liberty win at Jacksonville State next weekend, the win would give Liberty its first 4-0 start since 2008 and the fifth in program history (1989 6 games; 1990 4 games; 1997 4 games; 2008 6 games). Offense Liberty finished the Indiana State game with exactly 500 total offensive yards on 75 plays (6.7 yards per play average), marking the third game in a row Liberty has tallied 500 or more yards of total offense. The last time the Flames finished three or more games in the same season with 500-plus total offensive yards was in 2010 (four times). If the Flames were eligible for the NCAA FCS national rankings, Liberty would rank No. 9 in the country in total offense (536.0 yards per game). Liberty has scored 40 or more points three or more times in a season for the 13th time in program history and the third time in consecutive games (also in 1994 and 2009). The Flames are averaging a Big South-best 49.3 points per game this season and would rank No. 5 in the country in scoring offense if the Flames were eligible for NCAA FCS national rankings. Liberty s offense continues to be powered by its passing games as the Flames 384.3 passing yards per game accounts for 71.7 percent of the team s total offense this season. Despite the lofty passing yardage numbers this season, Liberty has had a player finished with 100 rushing yards in each of its first three games of 2017 (Baylor Carrington Mosley: 122 yards; Morehead State Kentory Matthews 103 yards; Indiana State Carrington Mosley 102 yards). Following the Indiana State game, Liberty has scored on 58.5 percent (24-of-41) of its offensive drives during the 2017 season (Baylor: 8-of-12; Morehead State: 10-of-14; Indiana State: 6-of-15). Liberty continues to remain highly efficient in the red zone this season and would rank No. 15 in the country if it was eligible for the NCAA FCS national rankings (94.1 percent/16-of-17; 9 TDs [4 rushing; 5 passing]/7 FGs). The Flames finished the Indiana State game committing seven penalties resulting in 80 penalty yards. Through three 5 games in 2017, Liberty is averaging 7.0 penalties per game and 86.6 penalty yards per contest. Defense The Flames allowed Indiana State to finish the game with 534 total offensive yards, the most yards allowed by Liberty since surrendering 563 yards in a 48-19 home loss to Jacksonville State in 2016. Liberty has allowed two of its first three opponents to amass 500 or more total offensive yards in 2017 (Baylor 532; Morehead State 300; Indiana State 543). During the Flames first five seasons under head coach Turner Gill, Liberty allowed a total of six opponents to finish with 500 or more total offensive yards (48 games over five seasons). After allowing Baylor to rush for 254 yards on 34 carries (7.47 yards per carry) in the season opener, Liberty limited Morehead State to 64 yards on 30 carries (2.13 yards per carry) and Indiana State to 107 yards on 35 carries (3.1 yards per carry). Liberty has ranked in the Top 40 in the country in rushing defense three out of five seasons under Flames Head Coach Turner Gill (national ranking/average yards allowed): 2012 (No. 24/126.1), 2013 (No. 31/135.3), 2014 (No. 78/183.7), 2015 (No. 38/146.7) and 2016 (No. 106/219.5). For the third game in a row, Liberty allowed four third-down conversions and is holding opponents to a 28.6 percent thirddown conversion rate (12-of-42 overall; Baylor: 4-of-12; Morehead State: 4-of-16; Indiana State: 4-of-14). Indiana State converted on 2-of-3 fourth-down plays, giving Liberty s opponents a 71.4 percent fourth-down conversion rate in 2017 (5-of-7 overall; Baylor: 2-of-2; Morehead State: 1-of-2; Indiana State: 2-of-3). Four of Liberty s five forced turnovers in 2017 have been interceptions and Liberty would be tied for No. 16 in the country in total interceptions (4) if the Flames were eligible for the NCAA FCS national rankings. Special Teams Liberty s entire special teams units received postseason honors and all four return to their positions heading into the 2017 season: K Alex Probert (All-Big South first team/hero Sports Freshman All-America HM), P Trey Turner (All-Big South first), LS Hunter Winstead (All-Big South first team/ STATS FCS All-America third team), KR Frankie Hickson (All- Big South second team). Liberty led the Big South with 15 field goals in 2016, while K Alex Probert finished the season ranked No. 9 in the country in field goals per game (1.36). Liberty has turned three of its five forced turnovers into points in 2017, scoring its first touchdown of the Indiana State game following a forced fumble on a punt where one of Liberty s players was forced into the Sycamores punt return specialist, causing the loose ball. Liberty has blocked a potential game-winning or tying field goal on the game s final play in three of the last four seasons (2014 vs. No. 1 Coastal Carolina; 2016 vs. Gardner-Webb in overtime; 2017 vs. Indiana State).

Liberty 48, Baylor 45 (sept. 2, 2017) WHAT HAPPENED The beginning of Liberty's two-year FBS transition process started off with an offensive shootout. At the end it was the Flames standing as the victor, 48-45, over Baylor, Sept. 2, at McLane Stadium. On Feb. 16, the NCAA approved Liberty's waiver request to begin the twoyear FBS reclassification process. The Baylor game marked Liberty's final matchup against an FBS team as a FCS program. The Flames recorded their fifth win over an FBS program in school history with their victory. Three of the Flames' five wins over FBS programs have come under the leadership of sixth-year head coach Turner Gill. The Flames also defeated Appalachian State in 2014 and Georgia State in 2015. Liberty's first win over a FBS program came against Eastern Michigan in 1989, followed by a win over Ball State in 2010. With the win, the Flames move their record to 1-0 on the season, while Baylor opens the season at 0-1 under first-year head coach Matt Rhule. The game saw the two teams combined for 1,117 total offensive yards (Liberty 585; Baylor 532), with 725 of those yards coming through the air. HOW IT HAPPENED Liberty's offense controlled the game, as the Flames ran 103 plays for 585 total yards. The Flames went 15-of-24 on third down, giving Liberty more than 16 minutes of advantage in time of possession (38:16-21:44). Liberty committed zero turnovers, while coming up with two big interceptions. Chris Turner returned a pick 32 yards for a third-quarter TD, and Brandon Tillmon collected his first career INT on the game's final play. The Flames' defense also held Baylor to 41 yards and zero points during the first quarter, helping post Liberty to an early lead. In a game which featured three ties and four lead changes, Liberty took the lead for good at 34-31 on a 13-yard pass from Stephen Calvert to Antonio Gandy-Golden with 24 seconds remaining in the third quarter. HISTORY MAKERS The win marked the first-ever victory over a Power Five opponent in Liberty and Big South Conference football history. Liberty entered the game as a 34-point underdog and with only a 2.2 percent chance to win according to ESPN's Football Power Index (FPI). The game was ranked the 7th-biggest upset in college football over the last 25 years, in a Sept. 6 article on ESPN.com. The Flames joined Lamar (1981) as the only FCS teams ever to defeat Baylor. In their final season as FCS members, the Flames recorded their first season-opening victory away from Lynchburg since 1988, their inaugural season as an FCS (then 1-AA) program. WHAT THEY SAID Liberty Head Coach Turner Gill "I think Liberty's brand name just went out pretty strong across the country. Again, not just for football, but really for the whole school.... Now people are going to know about Liberty University." Baylor Head Coach Matt Rhule "Just an unbelievable offensive performance and Gandy-Golden, 13 catches for 192 yards, pretty much all of them with someone draped on him. I thought he took over the game and Mosley, the tailback, with 122 yards really when it mattered. And Stephen Calvert, he did a tremendous job at the quarterback position for them." 6 BUCKSHOT'S BIG NIGHT Making just his eighth career start, sophomore QB Stephen "Buckshot" Calvert rewrote the record books in Waco. Calvert's 447 passing yards broke the program record of 441, set in 1984 by Phil Basso against Carson-Newman. Calvert also set program records for attempts (60) and completions (44), while throwing three TD passes and zero interceptions and recording his first career rushing TD. NOTEWORTHY Alex Probert tied a Liberty single-game record with four field goals, equaling the mark most recently set by Matt Bevins on Nov. 20, 2010. He was 4-of-4 on the night and scored a total of 16 points. Antonio Gandy-Golden set career highs for receptions (13), receiving yards (192) and touchdowns (2). His 192 receiving yards rank No. 5 in program history and were the most by a Flame since Chris Summers' program-record 240 yards against Stony Brook on Nov. 19, 2011. Gandy-Golden and Damian King (10 receptions) are the first Liberty duo to record 10+ catches in a single game since Josh Stofle and Daniel Jackson at South Florida on Oct. 27, 2001. Carrington Mosley carried the ball a career-high 28 times for 122 yards. Liberty had a 300-yard passer (Calvert), a 100-yard rusher (Mosley) and a 100-yard receiver (Gandy-Golden) in the same game for the first time since Oct. 11, 2014 at Appalachian State, when Josh Woodrum (passing), D.J. Abnar (rushing) and Dante' Shells (receiving) achieved the feat. Liberty's 103 offensive plays were the most the Flames have run in a single game since totaling 104 plays at South Florida on Oct. 27, 2001. Jeremy Peters paced the defensive effort with a career-high seven tackles and two pass breakups. Chris Turner's eighth career interception was the first one he has returned for a touchdown.

It was just one off of the school single-game record and the most by a Flame since Biff Parson's five TD passes against Wingate in 2000. 44 Completions Calvert completed a Liberty and Big South-record 44 passes during a season-opening victory at Baylor on Sept. 2. He shattered the previous Liberty mark of 34 completions, set twice by Josh Woodrum (2012 and 2015). 60 Attempts Calvert's career-high 60 pass attempts at Baylor on Sept. 2 were another school record, eclipsing the previous standard of 57. Phil Basso was the most recent Flame to throw 57 passes, doing so against Central State in 1983. 447 Passing Yards Calvert's third program record at Baylor on Sept. 2 came courtesy of his 447 passing yards. Winstead (second team) and Probert (third team) were also named to the STATS FCS Preseason All-America Team. HUMAN HIGHLIGHT REEL Chris Turner Trey Turner Flames redshirt junior cornerback Chris Turner posted the No. 2 play on SportsCenter's Top 10 Plays on Aug. 12, thanks to a one-handed interception during a scrimmage. The play marked Turner's second career Top 10 appearance. He also made the cut on Nov. 19, 2015, following an acrobatic interception which helped seal a 24-21 win over No. 4/4 Coastal Carolina. Turner is the Flames' active leader with eight career interceptions, including a pick-six at Baylor.
