DETROIT LIONS vs san diego chargers GAMENOTES Win And In scenario With a win today over the San Diego Chargers ¾ The Lions will earn an NFC Wild Card playoff berth. It will mark the first time the club has qualified for the playoffs since it earned a Wild Card bid in 1999. ¾ The team s record would improve to 10-5, marking the most wins (10) by the club through 15 games since it had 11 through 15 games in 1991. The last time the Lions finished with 10 wins was 1995 when the team won its 10th game in the final week of the season. ¾ Detroit s record vs. the AFC West this year will move to 4-0. Since the NFL realigned into four divisions in each conference (2002) and played under the current scheduling rotation, this would be the first time the Lions swept a division (NFC North, NFC or AFC) during that span. ¾ Detroit will win 10 games for the eighth time since the franchise relocated to Detroit in 1934. That year, the Lions had four players to reach 4 picks: CB Ray Crockett (4), CB Melvin Jenkins (4), CB Kevin Scott (4) and S William White (4) With 19 yards off interception returns, the 2011 Lions defense can become the 10th squad for the Lions to register 400 interception return yards since 1940. get Off ThE field The Lions defense this season has been sparked by the unit s ability to stop opponent drives, limit points via turnovers, third-down defense, fourth-down defense and return touchdowns. 2011 nfl Leaders, Takeaways rk Tm Fum int Total 1 SF 14 21 35 2 GB 5 27 32 3 Det 12 18 30 4 Sea 8 21 29 2011 nfl Leaders, Opponents Third Down efficiency rk Tm Made att Pct. 1 Bal 58 191 30.4 2 Det 55 178 30.9 3 NYJ 57 181 31.5 4 Ari 63 196 32.1 2011 nfl Leaders, Opponent 4th Down efficiency rk Tm Made att Pct 1 NYJ 1 10 10 2 SD 1 9 11.1 3 GB 3 14 21.4 4 NO 6 19 31.6 5t Cin 3 9 33.3 5t Den 3 9 33.3 5t Oak 4 12 33.3 8 Ten 6 17 35.3 9t Car 3 8 37.5 9t Det 6 16 37.5 9t NE 6 16 37.5 2011 nfl Leaders, Opponents 3rd/4th and 1 efficiency* rk Tm Made att Pct 1 Det 10 26 38.5 2 NYJ 8 19 42.1 3 Car 14 27 51.9 4 StL 12 23 52.2 *Courtesy Stats, LLC. 2011 nfl Leaders, Yards Per Pass Play rk Tm G att Sk PP Yds avg/pp 1 Hou 14 462 38 500 2535 5.07 2 Pit 14 465 30 495 2515 5.08 3 Bal 14 458 45 503 2770 5.51 4 Det 14 507 38 545 3063 5.62 nfl Leaders, combined Fumble and interception return TDs rk Tm int Fum Total 1 Det 4 2 6 2t Chi 3 2 5 2t GB 4 1 5 Lions Leaders, combined Fumble and interception return TDs rk Year int Fum Total 1 1937 3 4 7 2t 1950 3 3 6 2t 1967 6 0 6 2t 2011 4 2 6 5t 1962 2 3 5 5t 1971 3 2 5 5t 1997 3 2 5 forcing IT 2011 nfl Leaders, Forced Fumbles rk Player Tm G FF 1t cliff avril Det 14 6 1t Terrell Suggs Bal 14 6 3 Quintin Mikell StL 14 5 3 Jabaal Sheard Cle 14 5 5t Jared Allen Min 14 4 5t Tambi Hall KC 14 4 5t Ryan Kerrigan Was 14 4 5t Aaron Maybin NYJ 11 4 5t Kyle Vanden Bosch Det 14 4 5t Patrick Willis SF 12 4 2011 nfl Leaders, Team Forced Fumbles rk Tm G FF 1 Bal 14 20 2 SF 14 17 3t Cin 14 16 3t Det 14 16 2011 nfl Leaders, Fumble recoveries rk Player Tm G Fr Yds TD 1 Jared Allen Min 13 4 6 0 2t cliff avril Det 13 3 24 1 2t Michael Boley NYG 11 3 78 1 2t Navorro Bowman SF 13 3 0 0 2t D Qwell Jackson Cle 13 3 1 0 2t Haloti Ngata Bal 13 3 28 1 2t Jonathan Vilma NO 9 3 0 1

The Lions have returned four interceptions back for touchdowns this year, which is tied for the most in the NFL. By registering 5 interception returns for touchdowns, the Lions can record the second-most in team history, with the team record held by the 1967 club who registered 7 interception return touchdowns. If Houston reaches 3 interception return touchdowns in 2011, he will tie Hall of Fame CB Lem Barney s team record of 3 set in 1967. Currently with 182 interception return yards, Houston, by adding 18 yards to that total, can become the seventh player in team history to record 200 interception return yards in a single season. The Lions are tied for third in the NFL with 16 forced fumbles. Avril is tied for a League-high with 6 forced fumbles in 2011, which is also a career high. By recording 1 forced fumble today, Avril can move into a tie for the 10th-most forced fumbles in a season among NFL players since 1994. Avril is tied for second in the NFL with 3 fumble recoveries. With 12 fumble recoveries this year, the Lions rank second for the most fumble recoveries in the League. They are also tied for fourth with 2 touchdowns via fumble returns. SpEciAL SpEciAL TEAMEr S John Wendling is one of the best and most productive cover guys on special teams units in the NFL. Wendling (special teamer) was an alternate to the Pro Bowl last season. Wendling is tied for second in the NFL this season with 16 special teams tackles. He led the NFL with 24 special teams tackles in 2010. Over the past two seasons, Wendling leads the NFL with 40 special teams tackles. Since entering the NFL in 2007, Wendling has 89 special teams tackles, the most over the past four seasons. TurNOVEr ScOriNG The Lions have been the best team this year in coverting interceptions and fumbles into defensive scores. With 6 TDs off interception and fumble returns, the Lions lead the NFL. With 1 touchdown by an interception or fumble return, the Lions will tie a franchise record for the most touchdowns via interception or fumble returns in a season. The team record is 7 (3 Int, 4 Fum) in 1937. The Lions have scored 2 touchdowns via interception or fumble return in three different games this season (2 at Dal 10/2; 2 at Den 10/30; 2 vs. Min 10/11). This has occurred in only one previous season, 1937, in Lions history. If the team returns an interception or fumble for a touchdown twice in one of the team s remaining two games, it will mark the fi rst time in team history that the Lions have scored 2+ touchdowns via interception or fumble return in four different games during the same year.
