Sounders FC have never lost to the Fire in nine meetings all-time in league play. Seattle has won six, including a 3-2 win last June 7 at Toyota Park in their only meeting of 2014, the third consecutive victory in the series for Sounders FC. The teams have played to three draws. Sounders FC also won the 2011 U.S. Open Cup Final between the clubs. Coaches record: Sigi Schmid vs. CHI: P34 W17 L8 D9 Frank Yallop vs. SEA: P13 W6 L6 D1 CHICAGO FIRE The Chicago Fire put an end to their four-game losing slide by coming back for a result, gaining a 1-1 draw with the Houston Dynamo on Friday evening at BBVA Compass Stadium. The Fire are in 10th place in the Eastern Conference with 15 points from 16 matches. LAST MATCH The Dynamo opened the scoring in the 56th minute. Brad Davis skipped through the left side of the Fire defense, played a quick one-two then drove a low ball goalward Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson had trouble corralling. Alex was first to it, tapping home the loose ball into the goal from close range. The leveler came in the 72nd minute. From a Greg Cochrane cross into the box, Patrick Nyarko ran onto the pass and slid into Dynamo goalkeeper Joe Willis. The ball fell free behind Nyarko just yards from goal, and he popped up quickly and hooked the ball back into the goal. Fire head coach Frank Yallop made three changes to the team that fell 1-0 to D.C. United at Toyota Park. Lovel Palmer came into the back four for Jeff Larentowicz, and Matt Polster and Jason Johnson started in midfield for Chris Ritter and Joevin Jones. CHICAGO FIRE (4-4-2): Sean Johnson - Lovel Palmer, Eric Gehrig, Adailton (Chris Ritter 71), Greg Cochrane - Harry Shipp, Matt Polster, Razvan Cocis, Jason Johnson (Patrick Nyarko 46) - Guly do Prado, Kennedy Igboananike (Mike Magee 59). TEAM NEWS The Fire ended their four-game losing slide but have still gone since May 30 without a victory following the draw at Houston. They have one win in their last 10 league games, since winning three in a row March 29-April 24. Getting a point on the road is sort of what you set out to do, and I felt we could have nicked it and won the game, Fire head coach Frank Yallop said. Great effort from our guys, really proud of the way they fought and MLS GAME INFORMATION

battled against adversity with a few injuries here and there, a couple of things going on, not having a full lineup, so very proud of the way we played and getting a point. Patrick Nyarko made his first league appearance of the season after undergoing surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee and scored his first goal of the season, his first since May 10, 2014. Nyarko had made his first appearance of the year at midweek in the U.S. Open Cup match. As my recovery continues, I keep saying I still have a little bit to go but all of these are confidence builders. Fifteen minutes, 45 minutes and then sooner rather than later I ll be considering myself for a starting position, said Nyarko. All I want is to help this team win games. That s all I ve been about and that s what I ll keep doing. The goal ended the Fire s goalless drought after 285 minutes the seventh-longest in MLS this season following back-to-back shutouts vs. New England and D.C. United. Mike Magee also made his third appearance in the last four matches, his first league outings of the season, coming on for the final half-hour. Patrick had a big impact in the game on Tuesday and comes and gets the tying goal here, Yallop said. I m pretty pleased for him. It s been a long road back, and he and Mike were great when they came off the bench. It s a long haul to get back from that type of injury, and I m very happy that they re both on the field and they re both contributing and doing well. Jason Johnson made his first start for the Fire since arriving in a trade with the Dynamo, playing 45 minutes in a wide midfield role. He had made six substitute appearances after coming over to the Fire. We ve got Polster sliding around from center back to midfield, me kind of playing everywhere in the midfield, you ve got [Johnson] playing. We ve got a lot of guys playing different positions and not complaining, just doing what they need to do, said midfielder Harry Shipp. In previous games I think we weren t always doing the little things effort-wise to get results in difficult places and I think we did all the little things to get the win unfortunately it didn t happen but I think we showed promise. SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC Seattle Sounders FC put an end to their three-game losing slide with some late dramatics, getting the game s only goal at the end for a win against D.C. United on Friday evening at CenturyLink Field. Sounders FC are in a tie for first place in the Western Conference with 32 points from 19 matches. LAST MATCH United were a man down after just the 27th minute, when Fabian Espindola was shown a straight red card by referee Silviu Petrescu for a high elbow to Sounders center back Zach Scott. The match-winner came two minutes from the end of regulation time. A cross from the left was partially cleared, but only as far as Tyrone Mears on the right side of the area, and he rifled a swerving shot past United keeper Andrew Dykstra inside the far post. Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid made five changes to the team that dropped a 4-1 decision at the Portland Timbers at Providence Park. Zach Scott and Dylan Remick came into the back four for Brad Evans and Oniel Fisher, and Cristian Roldan, Osvaldo Alonso and Thomas all came into the midfield for Andy Rose, Micheal Azira and Marco Pappa. SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC (4-4-2): Stefan Frei (Troy Perkins 44) - Tyrone Mears, Chad Marshall, Zach Scott, Dylan Remick - Cristian Roldan, Osvaldo Alonso, Gonzalo Pineda, Thomas (Andy Craven 78) - Chad Barrett (Darwin Jones 85), Lamar Neagle. TEAM NEWS Sounders FC put an end to their three-game losing skid in league play and their four-game losing run in all competitions with the win against D.C. United. To get out of a slump, or the funk we were in a little bit, sometimes just a couple of things need to break for you. It seems like it s a struggle, and it was a little bit of that. I thought we came out aggressively early on in the game, Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid said.... I thought we went after them. At that point, when they received the red card, I think we relaxed a little bit and took our foot off the gas pedal. We needed to keep pushing, which we tried to do when we came out in the second half. Tyrone Mears scoring his first goal for the club in the 88th minute, starting his 18th match out of 19 league games this season. It was Mears first goal in any competitive match since Nov. 27, 2010, when he scored for Burnley FC of the English Premier League. We needed that, Mears said. My first thought [after the goal] was just to run over to the bench. We re a big family here, you know? And we re all hurting, I know the fans have been as well. I wanted to celebrate with everybody. Said Schmid: He s hit a few like that in practice. He actually struck that really well. I think he said he did for the queen. MLS GAME INFORMATION

Troy Perkins was called upon to make his first league appearance of the season, coming on in place of Stefan Frei when he suffered a left shoulder sprain just before halftime. Perkins did play the full 120 minutes in the U.S. Open Cup loss to Portland. This is the reason we signed Troy, Schmid said. He s an experienced goalkeeper. He s been around the league. He knows what it s all about. As with any goalkeeper, sometimes when you re not getting a lot of games you have to work on your timing a little more and you can t get that timing unless you re in games. But his experience, his shot-blocking ability, his ability to read the game are certainly things he brings. Osvaldo Alonso made his first league appearance since May 31, after missing five league games, playing the full match in his usual central midfield spot. Thomás came back into the lineup for the first time since June 20, playing 78 minutes in a wide midfield role. Sounders FC also recorded their first defensive shutout since June 13, a 3-0 win vs. FC Dallas. Seattle had allowed seven goals over the previous three games. We all said, Tonight is where we get a result. We can t think about going a goal down or not playing well. We had to get a result, whatever it took, Mears said. I thought it was really good defensively. That s what our season s been built on: being good at the back and keeping clean sheets. MLS GAME INFORMATION

CHICAGO FIRE SERIES NOTES Sounders FC leads the all-time series with Chicago at 6-0-3, including a 3-0-2 record on the road, where the club has allowed just four goals in five meetings. The Rave Green have won three consecutive matches against Chicago since 2012, and six wins in its past seven overall in the series after playing to two draws in 2009. Despite being unbeaten in nine matches against the Fire, Sounders FC has scored just 13 goals in nine league matches. Until last year s 3-2 win in Chicago, Seattle had never scored more than two goals in the series, while Chicago had never scored more than one. The only team in MLS to not draw at home yet in 2015, Chicago has posted a 4-4-0 record at Toyota Park. In addition, the club ranks seventh in MLS in total shots, while allowing the secondfewest shots in MLS. FIRE NOTABLES Chicago is highlighted by budding midfielder Harry Shipp, who leads the team with five assists and has added two goals in his second season in MLS. The pairing of David Accam and Jeff Larentowicz pave the way offensively with four goals each. Goalkeeping duties have been split between Sean Johnson and veteran Jon Busch, with Johnson posting a 1.22 GAA to go along with 31 saves in nine appearances. SEATTLE SOUNdERS FC AT CHICAGO FIRE JULY 11, 2015-5:30 P.M. PT SOUNdERS FC WEEKLY NOTES RAVE GREEN IN GOLd CUP Throughout the month of July, teams from across the region are facing off in the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup, a month-long tournament to determine this year s champion of North America, Central America and the Caribbean. For Sounders FC, it s a chance for three of its finest to make their mark for their respective nations. Clint Dempsey and Brad Evans don the red, white and blue to defend the U.S. National Team place atop the region after winning the 2013 edition of the tournament, while Marco Pappa leads the attack for Guatemala, who hasn t captured a Gold Cup title since 1967. Jurgen Klinsmann s squad kicked off its Gold Cup campaign with a 2-1 win over Honduras on Tuesday evening. Dempsey scored both goals for the USMNT, marking the fourth different Gold Cup he has scored in, while his seven career tallies in the tournament put him in fourth place on the U.S. all-time list. His 43 career goals for the USMNT is second all-time. Evans logged 28 minutes after entering as a substitute in the 62nd minute. The Sounders captain made a key defensive stop in the box after a Honduras attacker got behind the defense, preserving the one-goal lead. A championship for the U.S. would mean an automatic bid to the Confederations Cup, where the Americans would face off against the world s best. FRIBERG RE-JOINS SOUNdERS FC Seattle Sounders FC announced last week that it has signed midfielder Erik Friberg, who will wear No. 28. Friberg previously played for Sounders FC in 2011, starting 23 of 26 appearances and recording one goal and two assists. He then moved to Swedish side Malmö FF, helping the club to the 2013 Allsvenskan championship before moving to Italian side Bologna for the 2013-2014 Serie A season. Most recently, the Göteborg native played 13 games for Esbjerg in the Danish topflight. Prior to joining Seattle in 2011, Friberg played four seasons with Swedish club BK Häcken from 2007-2010, leading the team with seven assists in 2009. He began his career with hometown club Västra Frölunda. MEARS OPENS MLS SCORING ACCOUNT Tyrone Mears scored his first goal in nearly five years, including his first in MLS, in last Friday night s 1-0 win against Eastern Conference leader D.C. United at CenturyLink Field. Mears blast proved to be the difference for the Rave Green, who snapped a three-game losing skid in league action. In the 88th minute, Mears broke the scoreless deadlock with an emphatic right-footed strike from just inside D.C. s 18-yard-box. After moving forward into the attack, Mears received the ball unopposed in the box after a cross from the left flank passed through the area. The ensuing half-volley pierced through the defense and into the far top corner of the net. The strike is nominated for AT&T MLS Goal of the Week for week 18. The three-point result placed Sounders FC into first place in the Western Conference. In addition, Mears goal was his first scoring tally since January 8, 2011 with English-side Burnley. Schmid joined Sounders FC in its inaugural campaign after leading the Columbus Crew to its first MLS Cup and Supporters Shield, earning MLS Coach of the Year honors in 2008. From 1999 through 2004, Schmid s L.A. Galaxy teams won four major competitions: the 2002 MLS Cup and Supporters Shield, the 2001 U.S. Open Cup and the 2001 CONCACAF Champions Cup. He was voted the MLS Coach of the Year in his first season, 1999. Altogether, his Galaxy teams were 79-53-32 and reached the MLS Cup final four times, winning three division crowns. Schmid has twice served as the U.S. U-20 National Team head coach, most recently in 2005 at the FIFA World Championships. Schmid first forged a winning tradition at his alma mater, UCLA. After serving as an assistant, he was elevated to head coach of the Bruins in 1980, beginning a 19-year run at the helm. He claimed three national titles (1985, 1990, 1997) and was named national coach of the year following the 1997 championship. His UCLA teams accumulated a record of 322-63-33.
