Your National Champions in the Recreational Division! Delaney Charon (captain), Patrice Eakman, Hannah Johnson, Alexa Lee, Lexie Liimatainen Payten Schneberger, Nora Wagner, Leah Westmoreland & Megan Witte Step in Time is the Masquerade NATIONAL CHAMPION! What an amazing end to an amazing first year as a studio! The Taurus Tap PACC Team won the National Championship with their tap routine to Step in Time! Nationals are a chance to compete against dancers from around the country. In order to qualify to attend nationals, the dancers must compete at regionals and receive a platinum/diamond adjudicated award, place in the overall high score awards or receive another equivalent award. This year we had 6 team routines and 8 solo/duo routines qualify for nationals, which were held at the Burnsville Performing Arts Center. These routines were: Scorpius Select s Nightmare, Draco Dancer s Dreaming with a Broken Heart and Fashionista, Phoenix Fusion s Sweet Dreams and Dream, and Taurus Tap s Step in Time. Our qualifying solos were: Heather Striowski s Halo s Mix, Patrice Eakman s You Can t Stop the Beat, Lexie Liimatainen s I Loved Her First, Lily Westmoreland s Hyphy, Megan Witte s Alice, Jasmine Eastman s Lights Camera Action and Amelia Allen s At the Hop. Our duo was Payten Schneberger and Patrice Eakman s Beat of My Drum. Practices started the Monday after recital. We had 8 hours of practice per team routine throughout the 2 weeks between recital and nationals and 4 hours of practice per solo/duo. During these practices we really drilled the Continued on Page 5

If you would like to purchase ballet slippers we have them in stock at the studio. Ballet Technique Classes (all levels)- Dress code for these classes is a leotard and tights with NO shorts or skirt and either ballet slippers, freeforms or half shoes. Leotards are available for purchase at the studio. The white Revolution ballet slippers used for our regular classes are acceptable, however they are not the easiest for the teacher to see the dancer s foot so we recommend a pair of our pink Jete ballet slippers. For dancers who are done growing and/or need more support, we highly recommend our MDM ballet slippers which feature built-in arch support. Both types of shoes are in stock now- ask at the desk to try them on! Jazz & Tap Technique Classes (all levels)- Please wear appropriate dance attire, including leotards, dance shorts, tank tops, etc. so that the instructor can see the movement of the body. Please do not wear baggy clothing or sweatpants. For jazz, dancers need to have either jazz shoes, ballet slippers, half shoes, freeforms or pedinis. Tap shoes are required for tap. We have shoes and clothing available for sale. Acro Technique Classes (all levels)- This class includes tumbling and many moves where you are upside down. Please wear a leotard or biketard to avoid embarrassing mishaps with shirts that ride up! You may wear foot undeez or go barefoot in this class. Student and Adult Pilates- It is recommended that you bring a mat for these classes since many moves are done on the floor. Wear comfortable clothing you can move in. Dance shoes or bare feet are suggested.

National Champions (Continued from page 2) choreography and timing and made any necessary changes based on the judges suggestions we had received throughout the regional season. The first 6 days of the national competition runs just like the regional competitions. The dancers perform their routines and are judged and given a score. They receive an adjudicated placing based on their score and are also eligible for overall awards and judges choice awards. During the preliminary competition, we were excited to receive 7 overall placings! Heather, Megan, Payten/Patrice and Sweet Dreams all received 1st Overall High Score, Step in Time received 2nd Overall High Score, and Patrice and Nightmare received 5th Overall High Score. In order to make it to Finals, we needed to be one of the top 4 highest scoring routines out of the entire recreational division, regardless of age, group size or dance style. Imagine our surprise when they announced Step in Time as one of the finals routines! The announcement wasn t made until about 9:30pm on Wednesday night and we had to be back in Burnsville ready to perform on Thursday afternoon. To make it even more stressful, one of our dancers could not attend and, although we had another dancer who knew the routine, she had not practiced the changes we had made specifically for nationals. After a pretty sleepless night (how can you sleep when you are so excited???) the team headed back to Burnsville. We had about 3-4 hours to use for practicing and listening to our preliminary critiques before we had to perform. We spent most of this time practicing all the toss combinations that were included in this routine and going over timing. Only the top 4 highest scoring routines in the recreational division were invited to finals, so we were up against 3 other routines- a Petite (ages 5-8) large group tap, a Teen (same as our age category of ages 12-14) large group tap and a Petite hip hop solo. It was a bit nerve-racking since 2 of the other routines were tap and the ages were so diverse- it s hard to know what the judges will be looking for. For Finals, the judges do not score the routines, they simply watch the 4 routines and then choose one as a winner. After the judges have made their decision, all 4 routines are invited to stand on stage and the winner is announced by playing their music and a video clip of their routine up on the big screen. What an amazing moment when that music played and everyone realized it was Step in Time! We were presented with a trophy that is 5 ½ feet tall! It was an incredible moment for everyone. We would like to thank all the parents, relatives and studio friends who supported us this year and took the time to share this moment with us either in person or by watching online. We couldn t have gotten here without you! If you would like to become a part of the PACC team contact Suzy at suzy@ssddance.com
