3 The President s Cup starts June 3rd with a qualifying round. Turns out we only had 44 sign-ups thus the need to eliminate 12 players to make the bracket 32. Or somehow get another 20 sign ups. The board decided to have a qualifying round June 3rd. The President s Cup will be over before the Member/Member-Member/Guest. Each match play round will be about a week. The NCGA Senior 4 Ball Qualifier/Just for Fun (2 man best ball) is on the horizon June 10th. It will be a two man best ball at 8AM on the Orchard. As of this printing we are working on the tournament. The member/member-member/guest will be in mid-july (July 14 th and 15 th.) Of course we will have a putting contest, horserace and spouse dinner. Lots of fun do not miss out on this one. There is an entry fee; it is also supported by your dues. It is one of the best deals in town. Our Tournament Committee is working hard to make sure the tournaments go well. Many thanks to Tony Dipaola, Les Hanson, Bill Rapp, Jason Hong and Steve Mumma who served on the committee. As always if you have any suggestions to improve our tournaments or if you for see any problems or situations that we should be aware of please contact John Vass at 916 209 8430 or jvass@sbceo.org. or Tony Dipaola916 253 3903 or a.dipaola@ sbcglobal.net. We will try to do our best to make things enjoyable for all SUNSHINE ALERT From time to time, someone in the Men s Golf League or their spouse will have a serious illness or pass away. As head of the Sunshine Effort, I would like to be informed of this so I can send the person or their family an appropriate card. Also, if the member agrees, this information will be publicized in our monthly
4 Linksletter so all members will be aware. If you know of someone in this situation, please contact Bob Emge at remge@starstream.net or (916) 434-6712 Superintendents Corner By Jason Wolf The heat is on! As most of you are aware, we will be pushing the 100 degree mark for the next 4 days. The heat is hard on everyone and everything, especially low mowed turf. We have a few things in our back pocket to help us get through the stressful times. One thing is the use of wetting agents on the turf. Wetting agents are substances that reduce the surface tension of water to allow it to spread drops onto a surface, increasing the spreading abilities of a liquid. Lowering the surface tension lowers the energy required to spread drops onto a film, thus weakening the cohesive properties of the liquid and strengthening its adhesive properties allowing the water to move down to the roots.
5 Another thing that we will be doing is opening up (aerifying) dry spots and top dressing this area with a sand product that is supposed to retain up to 12 times its weight in water and soluble nutrients. I m interested to see what kind of response we get from this! If you could please try to avoid all dry spots on the fairways and any worn areas in the turf from cart traffic. Stay cool!
