Northern Schools Steer Competition at Manilla On the 21st, 22nd and 23rd of November the Inverell High Show Team made up of students from Year 7 to Year 11, competed in the Northern Schools Steer Competition at Manilla. The team members were Piper Tome, Georgia Hobday, Whitney Ellery, Abbey Cross, Bailey Whitton, Jaydan Cox, Jeb Cavenagh, Orrick Youll, Joshua Woodward and Jarrad Humphreys. We travelled to Manilla by bus on Tuesday arriving around lunch time after stopping at Bingara for morning tea and a Vinnies shop for the boys. It was $2 bag day and they were not going to miss out on a bargain. At Manilla we spent the afternoon washing the cattle and setting up our camp. Waking up early on Wednesday morning we took the cattle to get weighed and scanned, and then we prepared the cattle and got changed into our Show team uniform for the Paraders competition that afternoon. We had to compete against 10 Schools, 250 students and 60 steers. In years 7 & 8 we had Jaydan, Bailey, Abbey, Piper, Whitney and Georgia. Piper and Whitney getting top 2 in their heats and Piper getting 5th overall in the final. In the Year 9 and 10s we had Orrick and Jeb with Orrick making the final and 7th overall. Later that afternoon we competed in the Junior Judging competition which were split into two groups of under 16 s and opens. Several competitors from Inverell High went out into the ring to assess the cattle. Orrick with what he termed as an educated guess made it into the finals and after delivering his oral presentation eventually won his age group. Joining with all of the other schools, that night we competed in the farmer s challenge which included moving hay by wheelbarrow, constructing a panel fence, connecting a water pipe to fill up a large bucket, bobbing for an apple in the bucket, deconstructing the fence and removing the hay. This competition was done as a time trial. Our team was a combination of Inverell High and Farrer students. On Thursday our 6 steers competed in their weight classes against all the other steers. The cattle were judged on their conformation, muscle and fat cover. Inverell High were one of the only schools to bred their own steers and we did well in the heats getting a first with TIMOTHY led by Piper, then a 1st and 2nd in the next class AARON led by Abbey and BLAKE led by Georgia. TIMOTHY and AARON went back into the ring to compete for Champion and Reserve Champion and we were unlucky not to get first or second but AARON did place third in the final of all the steers in the competition. We are still waiting on the carcass results which will be announced next week. We would now like to thank some people who played a big part in the organisation of the competition. We would to thank Miss Rawson, Mr Luxford and Mr Neil McLane for all they have done to get us this far. We would like to thank Ms Colley, the school community and our generous sponsors for their continued support. The winning ribbons have been presented to the school and have been placed on display. I would also like to express my deep gratitude to Miss Rawson for her support and for the numerous extra-curricular activities she has organised for the students over the past twelve months. These activities have helped the show team members expand their knowledge and has provided them with exposure to the wider Australian cattle industry. I would like to congratulate every member of the Inverell High Show Team on a very successful year, they have shown comradery, courteousness and sportsmanship throughout every aspect of showing cattle. Congratulations, well done and I look forward to next year. Mrs McCabe Agriculture Teacher/Show Team Manager
