Global Learning in Business Education: Case Study 2018 PyeongChang Olympic Games Lisa Delpy Neirotti, Ph.D. The George Washington University
GW + Olympic Background Since 1992, GW has organized study abroad courses to both Summer and Winter Olympic Games. Students meet with Olympic related executives, collect data on spectators, and since 2016 work with IOC on data capture in venues including security, VIP & Media seating, workforce break rooms, parking, and other measures. 11
Business lessons in General The influence of politics on decisions The short and long term benefits of mega events The importance of data to support decisions Project management for a very large and complex project How leadership styles impact loyalty Sustainable initiatives come 2 nd to revenue Peace is money 12
Business lessons/challenge specific to PyeongChang What should the post-olympic strategy be for the Gangwon province? The 2018 Winter Games enhanced tourism infrastructure in the area and increased awareness Previously no modern, 4-5 star hotels only Traditional Korean guest houses (3 new beachfront properites) Reputation amongst Koreans of area is poor rural & unsophisticated New highway & high speed train (reduce travel time/more accessible 13
Defining the NEED Facts: South Korea has invested a lot of resources in order to host the events The event created a great opportunity to promote the area on a global scale Wants: We need to capitalize on this momentum to further develop the local economy We still need to preserve the areas character that focuses on sustainability 14
Products & Experience Venues & Infrastructure Communications & Engagement To guide our analysis and strategy development we adopted a similar framework to the one used by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Governance Supporting Ecosystem 15
A legacy plan what do with all the venues? Although each Olympic host cities says they have a legacy plan, few do. 16
17 Olympic Village Legacy Pyeongchang Village condos sold
Analytical Approach How capitalize on Olympics to enhance brand & increase visitors? What impressions did media leave on viewers? How make Gangneung attractive? New hotels on beach What have other Olympic cities done? Bobsled runs Ziplines Adventure parks Leadership retreats How use the Olympic venues for a sustainable long-term use? Not only for sport but for what other purpose? Frozen fish container storage convention centre an indoor amusement park or football field North/South joint Olympic Training Facility. Already have a speed skating training centre near Seoul 18
Strategic Insights Important to ensure that recommendations are integrated into strategic plans at all governmental levels ILLUSTRATIVE Baseline City Plan Benchmark 3- year Strategy Province Plan Strategic Alignment Internal & External Assessments Country Plan 19
A Once in a Lifetime Learning Experience 20 May the spirit of the Games remain with the students in work and life.
