Best Friend Equine Supply, Inc., created the Best Friend Grazing Muzzle in 1997. Since its introduction, the Grazing Muzzle has changed the way that thousands of people care for their horses' diet-related concerns, such as laminitis and obesity. All Best Friend Grazing Muzzles allow unrestricting drinking and reduced grass intake. We believe the Best Friend Grazing Muzzle is the highest quality grazing muzzle on the market. Others agree as it has been recommended by veterinarians, barn managers, editors of The Horse Journal, farriers, and horse owners. Just take a look at our website to see what others have had to say! In addition to grazing muzzles, we also offer muzzles that curb cribbing and biting and soft stall muzzles that enable performance of temporary or lightduty tasks. ALL Best Friend muzzles sold through www.bestfriendequine.com come with a 30-day guarantee. * Here's how to select the right Best Friend muzzle in four easy steps
1. Select a style. Best Friend Standard Horse Grazing Muzzle: This grazing muzzle has a durable, reinforced rubber bottom and reinforced straps, and attaches to your own halter with four hook-and-loop straps. This muzzle can be rotated to extend the usable lifespan. This is a good choice if your horse is difficult to fit or can get out of almost anything. Available in six sizes: large horse (oversize), horse, cob, pony, mini, and mini mini. Best Friend Deluxe Horse Grazing Muzzle: This "all-in-one" grazing muzzle has a durable, reinforced rubber bottom and reinforced straps already attached to a halter and includes extra webbing over the top band to improve durability and a breakaway feature for safety (extra plastic buckle included). Available in six sizes: draft, large horse (oversize), horse, cob, pony, and mini.
Best Friend Have-a-Heart Grazing Muzzle: This "all-in-one" grazing muzzle has a durable, reinforced rubber bottom and reinforced straps already attached to a halter with an expandable noseband to reduce potential rubbing, extra webbing over the top band to improve durability, and a breakaway feature for safety (extra plastic buckle included). Rubbing is further reduced by a V-strap that not only helps keep some of the weight of the muzzle off the nose but also helps position the muzzle and keep it from coming off. Enlarged openings allow for increased air flow. Available in four sizes: draft, large horse (oversize), horse, and cob. Best Friend Cribbing or Free-to-Eat Muzzle: This muzzle has an ultra-lightweight, aluminum bottom grill, nylon webbing, and padded noseband, and attaches to your own halter with four hook-and-loop straps. It curbs cribbing and biting, while allowing unrestricted drinking and eating. This muzzle does not reduce grass intake. Available in four sizes: large horse (oversize), horse, cob, and pony.
Best Friend Soft Stall Muzzle: This muzzle is designed for temporary or light-duty tasks, such as preventing access to shavings, removal/eating of bandages, and biting. No first aid kit should be without it. It is not intended for use as a grazing muzzle. Available in three sizes: horse, cob, and pony/mini. 2. Look at the size chart and, based on the "fits" description, determine the expected muzzle size and the "depth" of the muzzle for the selected style. Your horse will usually wear its halter size but not always. Example: You have selected a Best Friend Deluxe Horse Grazing Muzzle. Your horse weighs 1100 lbs. and measures 16 hands. By looking at the "fits" description in the size chart, your horse is expected to need a "horse" muzzle size. The depth of the Best Friend Deluxe Horse Grazing Muzzle in size "horse" is 7 ½ inches.
Muzzle Size Fits Standard/Cribbing Styles Deluxe/Have-a-Heart Styles (circumference x depth) (circumference x depth) Mini Mini Mini Pony Cob Horse Large Horse (Oversize) Draft average-sized miniature larger miniature, Shetland, weanling (200-300 lbs) most average-sized ponies and yearlings, very small-faced horses (300-500 lbs; 12 hands and under) large ponies, small horses (e.g., Morgans), small-faced horses (e.g., Arabians) (500-800 lbs; 13-14 hands) average-sized horses (e.g., Quarter horses) (800-1100 lbs; 15-16 hands) Warmbloods, largefaced horses (1100-1600 lbs; 17 hands and over) very large breeds (e.g., Percherons, Belgians) 16" x 3" N/A 18" x 3 ½" 20" x 5 ½" (Deluxe only) 20" x 4 ½" 22" x 5 ¾" (Deluxe only) 22 x 5 ½" 24" x 7" 24" x 6" 26" x 7 ½" 26" x 6 ½" 28" x 8" N/A 30" x 8"
3. Measure the "circumference" of your horse's face at a height equal to the "depth" of the muzzle for the selected style and expected size, and add two inches to the measured circumference. Firstly, measure up the side of your horse's face from the tip of the lips towards his ear to the "depth" of the muzzle. Secondly, measure the "circumference" of your horse's face at the "depth" of the muzzle, and add two inches to allow for chewing and regular movement of the jaw. Example (continued): You measure 7 1/2 inches up the side of your horse's face from the tip of the lips towards his ear. You measure the circumference of your horse's face at this point as 24 inches. When you add two inches, the circumference is 26 inches. 4. Look at the size chart and, based on the "circumference" and "depth" of the muzzle for the selected style, determine if the expected size is correct. If in between sizes, go up one size. Example (continued): The circumference of your horse's face at the depth of the Best Friend Deluxe Horse Grazing Muzzle in size "horse" is 26 inches. This circumference corresponds exactly to the "horse" muzzle size. Therefore, you should order the Best Friend Deluxe Horse Grazing Muzzle in size "horse."
If the circumference of your horse's face is in between sizes, go up one size. The muzzle should not be tight or restrictive; it should allow room for grazing and chewing. You should be able to fit 2-3 fingers sideways between the grazing muzzle and the horse's face. The Best Friend Standard Horse Grazing Muzzle has a slightly closer fit. If you have selected the Best Friend Have-a-Heart Grazing Muzzle, the noseband adjustment should only be used to expand the noseband. If you feel you need to tighten the noseband, you probably need a smaller size muzzle. That's it! * All grazing muzzles come with a 30-day money-back guarantee covering defects in manufacturing. Damage incurred to the muzzle by your horse or the environment during use is not covered.
