Letter from the Editor My goodness! Where did the first half of the year go! Apologies for my late June edition, unfortunately my brain still hasn t received the memo that we are now into the second semester!! June was quite an eventful month, both the dressage committee and the show committee ran 2 great events, I have included some information and pictures below for those interested. July is also going to be busy, with: Sat 8 th Dressage Training Day Sun 9 th Rally Show Practice (plaiting, trimming, practicing workouts etc.) Sat 22 nd Rally Slow Non-Competitive Sports & Trail Activities All details are on the MARC Website and in the Calendar on page 10. Don t forget to check out the other calendar events planned for the second half of the year, and get your nominations in on time - as we all know, the weeks pass all too fast and the events will be here before we know it!! Sam Howard Newsletter editor New club shirts! An update on the club shirts - an order was placed including the pre-orders of everyone who sent them in, and we are expecting the delivery date to be just before the dressage championships, so fingers crossed I will be handing out shirts to members to sport them proudly! Thank you to everyone who did send pre-orders, it made the job easier for guessing the majority of sizing s within the club for ordering stock. Official Dressage competition Sunday 4 June. The Official/Restricted Dressage competition went ahead on 4th June, with clear skies. This time we had dust instead of mud!! Competitor numbers were lower than our last official comp but we had four judges with over 60 tests and the two arenas in action. 2

A big thank you to all the volunteers who helped with gear checking, setting up and taking down arenas, penciling, collecting sheets and scoring. Without our volunteers, these days could not be run at all and their efforts are very much appreciated by the Dressage Committee. As usual, Totally Tasty Catering provided a great service with their burgers and hot and cold drinks. Once again, it was particularly gratifying to the committee that all the competitors took the time to attend the presentation of ribbons and prize money at the end of the day, especially those who travel long distances to attend. (Pictures below show most of the happy winners at the presentation.) On Facebook and by email we have had some lovely comments about the day and the club so well done all. All in all, this was a very successful event. We are now looking forward to the two-day Dressage champs in August. Thank you to all the competitors who attended. Thanks must go out to the Show committee - Cate and Monique, you guys run a great show! Thank you to all the helpers special thanks to Donna Woodward for stewarding all day, and to the Judge Sophie Meehan - you had your work cut out for you with all the quality horses! 4

Thanks to the Totally Tasty Catering team for feeding everyone so well. Results from the Show are up on the MARC website. A cheap and easy way to get a full copy of EA Dressage rules. By Pam Thurlow Previously I used to print my own Rulebook, but because it is 180+ pages, it takes forever and costs a fortune in ink etc. One of the judges at the last comp said she had downloaded it onto a memory stick and taken it to a printer and they had printed it into a bound book for only $38, so I decided to do the same I took my memory stick to Zipprint, 355 Kent St Maryborough and they were brilliant. Printing cost $16 (double-sided) or $18 (single-sided) and they did it immediately. They offered to bind it (but I didn t ask about cost), however I asked them to the punch holes so I could put it in my ring-binder, which cost another $10. Total $28 and done in 5 minutes! And when the rules are updated (small changes each 6-12 months) I can simply print off the few changed pages and add them into my ring-binder. Food for thought!? I recently saw this article on the eurodressage website.. German Federation Reminds Members Not to Trim Whiskers and Ears The Secretary-General of the German Equestrian Federation (FN) has sent a reminder to FN members that trimming whiskers and ears is against animal welfare and forbidden in Germany. "We would like to draw your attention to the German Animal Welfare Law that trimming the vibrissae (hairs & whiskers) around eyes and muzzle, as well as clipping or cutting the hairs inside the ears of horses is prohibited. Adherence to this rule at horse shows in Germany is being supervised by German authorities. Competitors can be fined if their horses are found unlawfully trimmed or clipped. Efforts should be made to educate horse-keepers about the importance of the vibrissae in equine welfare, and to ensure that trimming is not required, rewarded or encouraged within competition." Trimming the vibrissae has been made illegal in Germany in 1998 for welfare reasons, but is permitted in the majority of countries. Whiskers and ear hair might look untidy and spoil the immaculate turn-out of competition horses, but even though they look superficial and nonessential, they are critical to a horse's spatial awareness. They alert the horse for objects immediately in front of its eyes of or below its nose. Grazing horses rely on their whiskers to guide their muzzles toward edible food and away from other objects. The whiskers near their eyes warn them from bumping into obstacles. The article goes on to discuss some small studies which were inconclusive about the negative effects, but still. Food for thought? 9
