McCANTS SCORING IN BUNCHES EARLY Junior guard Rashanda McCants established her career high as a freshman with 16 points in a win over Arizona State. She then matched that total an amazing five times during her sophomore season. But one game into her junior campaign, the Asheville, N.C., native was finally able to increase that mark with a career-best 17 points in the win over North Carolina Central on Nov. 9. That total would not last 48 hours, however, as McCants scored 18 in the win over Arizona State on Nov. 11. McCants shattered that mark on Nov. 18, scoring 27 points, including 20 in the first half, in the win over Syracuse. With 28 points against Purdue on Nov. 29, McCants has established a new career high four times in 2007-08, and has scored in double figures in 11 of 13 contests. PRINGLE BLOCK WATCH Senior forward LaToya Pringle is already UNC s single-season leader in blocked shots after tallying 121 in 2006-07. Pringle now has her sights set on the career mark. After collecting three blocks against Western Kentucky on Dec. 20, Pringle has 278 career blocks through 116 career games, 41 behind UNC leader Dawn Royster s 329 from 1983-87. HISTORIC WIN IN SEASON OPENER Carolina s 109-32 win over North Carolina Central in the regular-season opener on Nov. 9 established a new school record for margin of victory. The 77-point victory topped a 71-point win (106-35) over South Carolina State on Dec. 30, 1997. TAR HEELS SPREAD THE WEALTH IN OPENER Seven players scored in double figures for Carolina in its 109-32 win over North Carolina Central on Nov. 9. Rashanda McCants (17) and Iman McFarland (13) each established new career highs in the game. Freshmen Cetera DeGraffenreid (16) and Rebecca Gray (11) each reached double digits in their Tar Heel debuts. Alex Miller (15), Heather Claytor (13) and LaToya Pringle (12) rounded out the double-figure scorers. Standout senior forward Erlana Larkins was held scoreless for the first time in her career. WOMEN S HOOPS STRONG IN THE CLASSROOM The UNC women s basketball team has received the NCAA s Public Recognition Award for having an Academic Progress Rate in the Top 10 percent nationally for the sport. In addition to the Tar Heel women s basketball team, the UNC baseball, men s basketball, women s golf, volleyball and fencing teams were also recognized. LARKINS NAMED PRESEASON ALL-ACC Senior forward Erlana Larkins was named to the five-player preseason All-Atlantic Coast Conference team. Larkins was joined on the list by Maryland's Marissa Coleman, Duke's Abby Waner, NC State's Khadijah Whittington and preseason player of the year choice Crystal Langhorne of Maryland. Larkins was a first-team All-ACC selection in 2007. TAR HEELS PICKED SECOND IN PRESEASON POLL Coming off its third consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference title and second straight trip to the Final Four, North Carolina was picked to finish second in the ACC by the league's coaches, SIDs and media. The Tar Heels received 10 first-place votes to finish second behind preseason favorite Maryland, who gathered the other 27 firstplace votes. Following the Terps and Tar Heels, Duke was chosen to finish third, with Florida State, Georgia Tech and Virginia rounding out the top half of the league. NC State, Clemson, Virginia Tech, Miami, Boston College and Wake Forest completed the conference's predicted order of finish. Larkins returns for her senior season after three standout years in Chapel Hill. The Riviera Beach, Fla., product was a third-team AP All-America honoree and was named first-team All-ACC in 2007. She averaged nearly a double-double in 2006-07, scoring 12.9 points per game and grabbing a team-high 9.4 rebounds per contest. CAROLINA IN PRESEASON TOP 10 ONCE AGAIN North Carolina is ranked in the top 10 in both major polls to open the season for the fourth consecutive year. The Tar Heels are ranked No. 7 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll, while the Associated Press has Carolina at No. 8. UNC was ranked No. 2 in both polls ot open 2006-07, its highest-ever preseason rankings. FRESHMEN LOOK TO MAKE AN EARLY IMPACT The Tar Heels once again have an impressive freshman class that will play significant minutes right away. Cetera DeGraffenreid (North Carolina), Rebecca Gray (Kentucky) and Italee Lucas (Nevada) were each the Gatorade High School Player of the Year in their respective states in 2006-07. TAR HEELS SIGN FOUR FROM THE CLASS OF 2012 The University of North Carolina women's basketball program signed four high school seniors to National Letters of Intent, head coach Sylvia Hatchell announced Nov. 14. The four members of the class of 2012 are Laura Broomfield of Lexington Park, Md., Chay Shegog of Stafford, Va., She'la White of Portsmouth, Va., and Candace Wood of Charlotte, N.C. "We are very excited about bringing in another outstanding class," Hatchell said. "All four of these young ladies are true student-athletes - they are all strong both in the classroom and on the basketball court. We love the balance of this class, and we feel like we have covered all aspects of the game from point guard to great shooting to strong post play." Broomfield, who attends St. Mary's Ryken High School in Leonardtown, Md., is a 6-1 forward. Broomfield was an All-Met honorable mention selection by the Washington Post in 2006 and earned All-Area first-team honors. Before moving to Maryland, Broomfield was the 4Shot Hoops Georgia Rookie of the Year in 2005. Shegog, who attends Brooke Point High School in Stafford, Va., is a 6-5 forward/center. She was a Parade Magazine fourth team All-America honoree in 2007 and a three-time Fredericksburg Freelance-Star Player of the Year. Shegog was named firstteam All-Met by the Washington Post in 2007 after leading her team to a third straight Commonwealth District title. She averaged 18.2 points, 17.4 rebounds and 5.9 blocks per game as a junior. White, who attends Norfolk Collegiate High School, is a 5-5 guard. White participated in the Nike Skills Academy in 2006 and was named to the all-tournament team at the Boo Williams Invitational in 2007. She averaged 21 points per game as a junior at Woodrow Wilson High School. White was a Street and Smith honorable mention All-America performer in 2005 and 2006 and earned first-team all-region honors in 2005. Wood, who attends Victory Christian Center School, is a 5-11 guard. Wood was an honorable mention Street and Smith All-America performer in 2005 and 2006 and was named to the Nike Jr. Phenom Showcase all-star team in 2006. Wood was also a first-team all-state honoree in 2006 and led her team to the NCISAA state championship. LARKINS ON WADE, WOODEN LISTS (NAISMITH, TOO) The 2007-08 preseason "Wade Watch" list for the State Farm Wade Trophy Division I Player of the Year was announced in August by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association, and senior forward Erlana Larkins was among the candidates. The 25- member list, selected by a committee of leading coaches, journalists and basketball administrators, is comprised of top Division I student-athletes who best embody the spirit of Margaret Wade according to the following criteria: game and season statistics, leadership, character, effect on their team and overall playing ability. The John R. Wooden Award committee announced Nov. 1 the preseason candidates for the 2007-2008 Women's Wooden Award, and Larkins was named among the 30 standout players. The Award is named for the three-time college basketball All American, 1932 Player of the Year and ten-time national championship coach at UCLA. Larkins was one of 50 players named to the 2007-08 Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T preseason candidate watch list, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced.
