Royals vs. Orioles Last night s loss dropped KC s lead to 3-2 in the season series with a pair remaining...kansas City is still 10-5 in its last 15 inseason meetings...the Royals trail the all-time regular season work by a 205-262 margin, including a 90-132 deficit in Baltimore, specifically 36-60 here in Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Date Site Score WP LP Att. 8/24 KC W, 8-3 Medlen Jimenez 27,797 8/25 KC W, 3-2 Duffy Gonzalez 29,734 8/26 KC L, 5-8 Chen Cueto 33,003 8/27 KC W, 5-3 Ventura Tillman 31,115 9/11 @ Balt L, 8-14 Givens Herrera 45,420 9/12 @ Balt 9/13 @ Balt FORTUNATELY JUST ONE LOSS--It wasn t a grand road trip opener for the Royals here last night, as the Orioles exploded for 10 runs in the eighth inning en route to a 14-8 decision...as for just one loss, that s what goes down in the books, but KC has now dropped six of seven for the first time this year and is 3-8 in its last 11 games to see its lead in the Central get cut to 10 games, while the lead for the best record in the A.L. has been chipped away to three...kansas City held a 3-0 lead after two and was leading 6-4 entering the home half of the eighth when the roof fell in as the O s hit a pair of grand slams and sent 13 men to the plate... Danny Duffy was the starter and allowed only two runs on three hits with three walks and eight strikeouts, but could only go 5.0 innings due to an inflated pitch count, needing 101 tosses...as for the pen, only Ryan Madson was spared the wrath of the Baltimore bats, working a scoreless frame, but inheriting a bases loaded jam and allowing one inherited runner to score...kelvin Herrera surrendered the first grand slam in the eighth to absorb his third loss and then Joba Chamberlain gave up the second in the frame...at 83-57, KC is back to 26 games over.500 since winning its way there on August 22 (74-48). PEN HAS RARE TOUGH EVENING--Unfortunately, the top statistical bullpen in the game entering last night had its roughest evening in quite some time, allowing 12 runs in just 3.0 innings, the first time that many runs have scored in that short amount of work in franchise history...the Baltimore eighth inning was the first 10-run frame against KC pitching since the Tribe scored 10 times in the fifth inning on September 30, 2012, in Cleveland en route to a 15-3 decision...coupled with the loss in 12 innings on Wednesday, this marks just the second time this year that he Kansas City pen has been charged with consecutive losses (May 31 at the Cubs and June 2 vs. the Indians)...Royals relievers still have a combined record of 27-11 for a big league best winning pct. of.711...despite the rough treatment last night, KC s 2.64 bullpen ERA still leads the American League and is second only to St. Louis in the Majors. ALL ABOARD THE CAIN TRAIN--One glaring bright spot last night was the performance by Lorenzo Cain, who recorded his second career multi-homer game while finishing the contest with three hits and a career-first 4-run game...the Most Valuable Player in last year s American League Championship Series against these Orioles, Cain has continued the attack this year, going 9-for-17 (.529) in four games against the O s this year...coupled with his 8-for-15 (.533) effort against Baltimore last October, LoCain has hit.531 (17-for-32) in his last eight games against the Orioles, with 10 runs scored, two doubles and two homers. DAYDREAM BELIEVERS--Kansas City hasn t Monkee d around when it comes to playing in the afternoon, posting a 14-6 mark in its last 20 day games dating back to a visit to Oakland on June 27...since that date, the Royals are 7-4 in their last 11 on the road in the daylight and 7-2 in the last nine afternoon home affairs...on the year, KC is 25-16 in the daytime, a.610 winning pct., which is the best in the American League and fourth best in the Majors. EXTENDED JOURNEY UNDERWAY--Last night was the first in this 10-game road trip and started a stretch in which 17 of the final 23 games are on the road...after the completion of this 3-game series, the Royals will head to Cleveland for a 4-game meeting with the Tribe that starts on Monday...KC will wrap up this next-to-last regular season tour of the year with a 3-game weekend stop in Detroit that begins a week from tonight. SERIES WORK--KC needs to win out in this series to avoid losing a third straight set for the first time in 2015...the Royals have lost consecutive sets for the first time since July 30-August 6 (1-3 in Toronto and 1-2 in Detroit)...KC entered last weekend vs. Chicago riding an 8-series unbeaten streak, going 7-0 with a split...the Royals are still 13-5-1 in its last 19 sets...on the year the Royals are 28-13 with five splits in the 46 series played...since June 7, when KC trailed the Twins by a game, the club has gone an American League best 53-34 for an 11-game turnaround in the standings. TODAY S STARTING PITCHERS: RHP Yordano Ventura (10-8, 4.34) vs. RHP Chris Tillman (9-11, 5.15) 2015 2014 Career 2015 2014 Career Yordano Ventura vs. Orioles 1-0 1-1 2-1 Major League Record 10-8 (4.34 ERA) 14-10 24-19 Chris Tillman vs. Royals 0-1 1-0 2-3 Major League Record 9-11 (5.15 ERA) 13-6 54-42 YORDANO VENTURA is making his 24th start of the year, 57th of his career and 58th overall outing...he faces the O s for the second time this season and fourth time in his career...the 24-year-old signed a five-year contract with two club options on April 4...he originally signed with the Royals in 2008 as a non-drafted free agent out of Samana in the Dominican Republic. STREAK SNAPPED--Yordano suffered his first loss since July 20 last Monday, dropping a 6-2 decision at home to the Twins...the defeat snapped a personal 6-game winning streak, spanning eight starts, as he was charged with four runs on eight hits over 5.1 innings... he surrendered a leadoff home run to Aaron Hicks on his third pitch of the game, then allowed just three singles over his next four innings...the night unraveled in the sixth as he allowed three straight hits and had a pair of wild pitches that led to a 3-run inning...all told, Yordano walked five to elevate his pitch count over 100 in the sixth inning, while it was the secondmost free passes he d issued since walking six in an August 11 start vs. Detroit...the 6-game winning streak was the longest by a Royal this season. ELEVATED STRIKEOUT RATE--Despite suffering his first loss in nearly six weeks, Yordano still managed to fan eight in 5.1 innings last Monday against the Twins, giving him 51 K s in his last six outings...his total since August 11 ranks second in the American League, behind only Chris Sale (54), while his 12.29 strikeouts per 9.0 innings rate is third-highest in the Majors in that span, trailing Sale (14.16) and San Diego s Ian Kennedy (13.21). HARD TO HIT OF LATE--After allowing a season-high 10 hits in 4.0 innings July 20 vs. Pittsburgh, Ace has been one of the toughest in the league to square up...starting with his July 26 win over Houston, he s held opponents to a.224 batting average (48-for- 204), which is eighth in the A.L. among pitchers that have faced at least 175 hitters. DAY BALL-- Ace has been at his best in the afternoon this year, going 6-2 with a 4.14 ERA in his 10 daytime starts...he s also held opponents to a.229 batting average (49-for-214) during the day, compared to a.266 average at night...he s 9-6 in 18 afternoon outings (17 starts) in his career with a 4.28 ERA. VS. O S--Yordano faces Baltimore for the second time in his last four starts, having worked 6.0 scoreless frames against them on August 27 in a 5-3 victory at The K...in that outing, Ace allowed just two hits and fanned a career-high 11 hitters...he s 2-1 in three regular season starts vs. the O s with an 0.89 ERA (2 ER in 20.1 IP), holding them Ventura vs. Orioles Player AVG. WADE BACK ON A ROLL--Kansas City reliever Wade Davis is back on track after displaying a mere mortal side during the early portion of August when he was charged with four earned runs in 4.0 innings, raising his season ERA to 1.13...he has since appeared 10 times allowing only three hits and fanning 13 over 10.0 innings while blanking the opposition and earning four saves in the process...he s 7-1 with 13 rescues this year, subbing periodically for Greg Holland...dating back to September 4, 2013, when Wade made the full-time return to the bullpen, he has posted a Major League best 18-4 record among relievers and 0.97 ERA, allowing only 15 earned runs in 139.2 innings, while limiting opposing hitters to a.147 average and fanning 182 hitters for an 11.73 strikeouts per 9-inning ratio. RECORD CROWDS AT HOME--The Royals broke their all-time season attendance record on Wednesday and will enter the final six home games with a season total of 2,506,913, a per game average of 33,426...Wednesday was the 56th time the Royals have eclipsed the 30,000 mark this year, posting a 32-24 ledger in those affairs, while going 13-6 in the 19 home sellouts this year...kansas City blew past the 2,000,000 mark in season attendance in the 60th home date on August 14, marking the fastest that KC has eclipsed that milestone, three dates earlier than the 1989 campaign...this is the 13th time in franchise history that Kansas City has drawn at least two million, but the first time in 24 years (1991). STILL THE BEST WITH TWO AWAY--The Royals continue to lead the Majors in two-out hitting with a.278 average, which is 33 points higher than the big league average (.244)...KC is slugging at a 435 clip, third best in the Majors, second in the American League, while leading the bigs with runners in scoring position and two away at.281, which is 48 points ahead of the big league average...kc has plated 257 two-out runs, third most in the A.L...a season ago in 2014, Kansas City hit just.236 in two-out situations with 219 total runs...the Royals boast three of the top six individual two-out hitters with Lorenzo Cain (.385) leading the league, followed by Kendrys Morales (.341) in fourth and Eric Hosmer (.323), who is sixth...morales (63), Hosmer (60) and Cain (60) rank third and tied for fourth, respectively in two-out hits...morales, who is third in the A.L. in overall RBI (101) has driven more than half of those in with two outs, leading the Majors with 51, shattering Joe Randa s (2000) previous club record of 46. A ROOM WITH A VIEW--The Royals enter today with a 10-game advantage in the Central...KC held a season-high lead of 14 1/2 games back on August 19, while the club is now 26 games over.500 after peaking at 31 above break-even on two occasions...the 10-game lead is still the largest of any division in the Majors, while the Royals possess a 3-game edge over Toronto for best record in the American League. NED S TREK TO.500--Manager Ned Yost, who became the winningest skipper in franchise history earlier this year, enters today three games below.500 all-time as KC s skipper (456-459)...it s still an impressive mark because of the route the journey took, as Yost got the job on May 13, 2010, and in his first 2 1/2 seasons saw the Royals play 55 games under.500 at 198-253...since the start of 2013, Ned s troops have gone 258-206 for a.556 winning pct., which is the best record in the American League (Baltimore next at 249-215), and fourth-most wins in the Majors trailing only St. Louis (275), the Dodgers (266) and Pirates (266) in that span...he passed Royals Hall of Famer Whitey Herzog as the winningest skipper in team annals when he captured win #411 on June 18 vs. the Brewers...Ned s 913 career wins, which include 457 with Milwaukee, rank 67th all-time and sixth among active managers...he s now 10 wins in back of Paul Richards for 66th all-time. vs. Orioles (2015) vs. Orioles (career) On Road (career) vs. Tillman (career) vs. Chen (career) Player AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI Butera - - - - -.205 39 8 0 7.197 380 75 7 37.333 3 1 0 2 - - - - - Cain.529 17 9 2 4.293 58 17 2 5.282 888 250 14 93.200 5 1 0 0.400 15 6 0 0 Colon - - - - - - 0 0 0 0.288 52 15 0 6 - - - - - - - - - - Cuthbert - - - - - - 0 0 0 0.000 7 0 0 0 - - - - - - - - - - Dyson.000 4 0 0 0.238 42 10 0 0.246 496 122 0 23.125 8 1 0 0.000 1 0 0 0 Escobar.150 20 3 0 1.248 137 34 0 7.262 1811 474 13 154.357 14 5 0 0.238 21 5 0 1 Gomes.500 4 2 0 0.219 224 49 13 30.246 1729 425 80 259.000 3 0 0 0.190 21 4 1 1 Gordon.000 5 0 0 0.236 415 98 15 48.264 2133 564 65 232.231 13 3 2 3.313 16 5 1 1 Gore - - - - - - 0 0 0 0 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Hosmer.063 16 1 0 2.209 129 27 3 13.284 1386 394 38 181.125 8 1 0 0.350 20 7 2 5 Infante.200 15 3 0 3.255 145 37 4 26.277 2645 733 52 281.200 5 1 0 1.222 9 2 1 2 Morales.400 15 6 1 2.363 146 53 6 34.268 1546 414 60 228.455 11 5 0 1.417 12 5 0 3 Moustakas.474 19 9 2 9.242 99 24 5 16.242 1206 292 37 128.455 11 5 1 3.375 8 3 0 1 Orlando.429 7 3 1 2.429 7 3 1 2.191 89 17 2 6.500 2 1 1 2.667 3 2 0 0 Pena - - - - - - 0 0 0 0 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Perez.200 20 4 0 3.227 75 17 2 9.275 1033 284 36 133.222 9 2 1 3.188 16 3 0 2 Rios.538 13 7 1 2.295 505 149 19 76.268 3272 877 72 373.313 16 5 1 3.333 9 3 0 0 Zobrist.368 19 7 0 0.284 455 129 15 61.275 2209 608 67 304.200 40 8 3 4.378 37 14 1 3 Starting Pitchers Breakdown Total KC Avg.
