April 21, 2018 TWO SHARE FIRST DAY LEAD AT THE SIGNATURE INVITATIONAL AT THE FEDERAL CLUB GLEN ALLEN, Va. Central Virginian Ben Keefer (Glen Allen) and Neal Pease (Charlottesville) shot 3-under-par 69 to share the first-day lead at The Signature Invitational at The Federal Club being conducted at The Federal Club. Keefer and Pease are a shot ahead of northern Virginian Kurtis Grant of Herndon (2-under 70) and two clear of Daryl Chappell (Petersburg) and Steve Serrao (Midlothian), who both opened with 1-under 71, entering Sunday s final round. Hampton Roads-area golfer John Rosenstock (Virginia Beach) and Buck Brittain (Tazewell), completed the seven rounds of par or better in the regular category. Keefer admittedly had a stress free round and his scorecard reflects as much. Keefer birdied three of the layouts five par 5s and drained a 12-footer at the par-4 finishing hole for his longest birdie conversion of the four-birdie, one-bogey round. The relatively benign conditions were a welcome sight to Keefer and others, who ve dealt with incredibly windy conditions at previous events and during rounds in the early part of this golf season. I actually didn t think it played really hard it was nice to play when the wind wasn t blowing really hard and having a fairly calm day with some shots. I think it made people feel a little more comfortable, Keefer said. The powerful Keefer has plenty of which to cull from at the layout, a big-style golf course. All told, he s won five events conducted at the club the Signature in 2013, the Virginia State Golf Association Four-Ball Championship (with Tim Kelley) in 2010 and the Richmond Golf Association Nelson Broach Memorial (with Rich Jeremiah) in 2011, 2013 and 2014. I ve probably won more golf tournaments on this golf course than any other course in the state of Virginia I have no idea why, said Keefer, 39. Pease, 23, got off to a strong start, registering birdies on his first two holes and final two holes on the outward nine on his way to firing 3-under 33 on the first nine. He played well from tee to green the whole way, hitting 16 greens in regulation and missing just one fairway. He also tamed the club s slick putting surfaces. The biggest strategy was getting the speed of the greens down, said Pease, who is training in St. Augustine, Fla., in hopes of one day becoming a professional golfer. I hit my driver and irons really well. I was matching the line on the ball with the line on the putterface and everything was around the hole (on putts). Grant, 18, made birdie at the par-5 ninth hole and remained in red numbers the rest of the round. That said, he looked back to making four straight putts of about 15 feet at Nos. 4-7 three of them for par and the one at No. 5 for birdie as important in keeping his round going.
Making those putts, one after another, gave me momentum and I just had that feeling that putts were going to drop, said Grant, a senior at South Lakes High School in Reston. Impressively, he had just 25 putts for the round. Chappell had to make an adjustment from the start after tweaking a muscle in his right lat while warming up. He still managed three birdies, including a 15-footer at the par-4 18th hole. Serrao played the final five holes in two under par to join four others in red figures. In the senior division, Richmond-area golfer Scott Reisenweaver (Midlothian) returned 2-under 70 and owns a three-stroke lead over Neil Davis of Charlottesville (1-over 73). Reisenweaver had a solid putting round, logging four birdies to offset two bogeys. He had a bead on the slippery greens basically the entire round and collected birdies of 18 feet (No. 3) and 15 feet (No. 8) on his second nine in the two-tee start. Among the super seniors (age 60 and older), local Leon Roday (Henrico) shot 1-under 71 and is two ahead of Harry Thomas of Virginia Beach (1-over 73). Roday made eagle on his first hole of the day, the par-5 10th, watching his 35-foot third shot from the fringe dive into the hole. The memorable beginning to his day fueled Roday to a two under par outward half. GLEN ALLEN, Va.
