Osceola Elementary SAC Meeting Minutes Date: February 6. 2017 Meeting Called to Order: 2:30 pm SAC Chair: Meredith Gilbert Co-Chair: Christy Cleckler SAC Members Present: Meredith Gilbert, Christy Cleckler, Kevin Flassig, Kathy Szlosek, Woody Keck, Beckie Greene, Michael Anton, Tina Spada, Teresa Webb, Laurie Jennings, Ruby Clements Non-SAC Members Present: Ann Greene, Amber McAndrew, Heather Smyth, Aaron Smith Topic #1: Welcome Meredith Gilbert welcomed everyone to the meeting and asked everyone to sign in. Topic #2: Review/Approve SAC minutes from December 2016 Meredith Gilbert stated that the December minutes were emailed to everyone. There were no objections. Woody Keck motioned to approve December minutes. Kathy Szlosek seconded. Passed unanimously. Topic #3: SAC Membership Changes o Additions o Deletions Jennifer Marshalll needs to be removed. Woody Keck motioned to remove Jennifer Marshall. Laurie Jennings seconded. Passed unanimously. Topic #4: SAC Budget Review Current Budget o Meredith Gilbert announced that the current SAC budget is $1,872.73. There was no activity on our budget. o No requests were given for SAC funds.

Tina Spada motioned to approve the budget, seconded by Beckie Greene, passed unanimously. Topic #5: Principal s Report Use of State Awarded Grant Funds o The state gave the district $400,000. $300,000 was allotted to schools for uniforms. However, it was stated that it could be used at discretion of the school. o Mr. Flassig asked if anyone could provide input on how to use money at our school. He added that maybe it could be used to improve safety on our campus. o Tina Spada said that she had thought it was just for polo shirts. Mr. Flassig said they are allowing flexibility. o Kathy Szlosek said at the DAC meeting it was discussed that the money could be used for band uniforms. o Mr. Flassig proposed we could use the money to purchase spirit shirts for Friday. We could purchase one for each child. He added that the money could be used for club shirts as well, like science club. o Tina Spada said the spirit shirts could be used for tye dye t- shirts. Mr. Anton does tye dye with his business. o Tina Spada questioned if it could be used for different needs on this campus. o Teresa Webb wants to know if the money has to be used this year. It was stated that Mr. Flassig will look into that. o Mr. Flassig added that Osceola has community support for uniforms. o Tina Spada questioned if shirts could be worn during week. Mr. Flassig added that the school could be off dress code for one day each week and two weeks during the year. Mr. Flassig discussed that last month Osceola s Girls on the Run team was recognized at the Chamber of Commerce Meeting. He would like to thank the coaches, Mrs. Smyth, Ms. Gilbert, Ms. Cleckler, Ms. Fischer, and Coach Belfer for the support of the girls and help with the program. It is a fantastic program. Mr. Flassig discussed we have 90 new computers for use. Mr. Flassig discussed preventative dental screenings are being held at school. Mr. Flassig added that Pasta for Pennies collection is occurring now at school. The drive is to benefit children with Leukemia. The Sweetheart Dance is a family event. It is meant to be mom and son and dad and daughter. The cost will be $5 a family. Food will be

provided. The 5E s survey will be provided for the parents to complete at the dance. Mr. Flassig stated that we are focusing on attendance again. Student achievement is attached to attendance and he wants to stay on top of it. Last month we were at 93%. He wants to increase by a couple tenths. We are competing with Ormond Elementary and will meet at the bridge again. The Mayor will be there. We will continue this each month. Topic #6: School Improvement Report SIP 2016-2017 Mid Year Update o The mid-year reflection is due February 13. o Meredith Gilbert discussed the progress we are making. We are working toward meeting our goals. We have compiled data and are working on the reflection. PIP 2016-2017 Mid Year Update o No changes to the PIP. Topic #7: Title 1 Update 5Es Survey o Mr. Flassig stated that the survey is being conducted by the University of Chicago. 20% of parents need to take the survey in order for it to count. The survey provides data analysis. All students in 4 th and 5 th grade will take the survey. All teachers will complete it also. o Will replace title 1 survey. SAC Climate Survey o Mrs. McAndrew is awarding prizes for completing the survey. The window is February 1-28. o Meredith Gilbert stated that the students will take the survey during media 3 rd week in February Woody Keck stated that both links on our website and parent portal. Topic #8: School Climate Survey Meredith Gilbert stated that the climate survey window is February 1-28. Meredith Gilbert asked if there were any questions. No questions were brought up. Topic #9: District Advisory Committee

DAC Report o Mrs. Szlosek stated that there is a House bill now to remove 3 rd grade mandatory retention. o The funds will be increasing for each student next year. o The district is looking to decrease the cost of teacher certification. o The district wants to increase funding for safe schools. o The Ruler Program will be starting for social emotional learning. o There are proposals to go back to paper pencil testing. o They are discussing that districts are going to be in charge of teacher evaluations, not the state and VAM will go away. It is in the works. o Middle school bullying was discussed. They are tracking whether uniforms are making a difference. o Next month Kathy Szlosek will attend the DAC meeting. Date to be given. Topic #10: SAC Sub Committees Report Reading: Christy Cleckler o The Reading and Writing Correlates participated in Celebrate Literacy Week with a book drive and other activities throughout the week. Along with our Girls on the Run program here at Osceola, we collected around 50 books. The books will be given to the Ronald McDonald house. The book drive was also done in conjunction with the can tab collection this year. Ms. Gilbert s class collected the most can tabs and was awarded a pizza party. A huge thank you to Mrs. Smyth for her help and donations! We will share documents with Woody Keck for five star. o Dr. Seuss night is Thursday, March 2 at 6:00. The reading and writing correlates will be meeting soon to get ideas together for the night. Schmancy Pops and the Seabreeze FFEA will be attending. o Mary Wentzel from the Ponce Inlet Preservation Society will be coming to read to first grade during Dr. Seuss week. Every student will get a free pass to go to the lighthouse. She is coming Friday, March 3. Meredith Gilbert will check on dates for other grade levels to attend. Writing: Ann Greene o Nothing to add at this time.

Science: Kathy Szlosek o Science Night at the museum was a huge success. There were around 250 in attendance. The families enjoyed it. They would like to have again next year. A lot of teachers attended. Some teachers brought students from the Dickerson Center. One teacher walked students from the neighborhood. Ruby Clements stated that the first Saturday of the month families can attend the museum for free. She proposed sending something home. Math: Heather Smyth o Nothing to add at this time. School Culture: Different Chair for each event o Mrs. McAndrew shared that The African American Read In is February 16. Celebrity readers will be in attendance. Seabreeze Culinary will be catering the event. o Ann Greene shared that the FSA pep rallies are coming. The first one will be held at 1:30 on February 27 for the Florida Writes assessment. 4th and 5 th grade will put on skits. o The second Pep Rally will be before the FSA in March. We do them in order to get them excited about the assessment. Topic #11: Public Input Discussion o Meredith Gilbert asked if there was any discussion. o Heather Smyth shared that Girls on the Run will be pushing start dates back to next week. The hope is that we can recruit more girls. There are scholarships available. Ruby Clements asked about run club for boys in the morning. Heather Smith said that she is looking into a run/walk club. Brags o Mr. Flassig shared that at the UNCF meeting, Ms. Todman was recognized for being one of the longest running ambassadors. She has been ambassador for 12 or more years. o Woody Keck stated that Osceola is getting close to 1:1 ratio with the technology. Mr Flassig added that different apps are being utilized around campus. o Tina Spada wanted to recognize Mrs. Treur. She walked around with the kids from the Dickerson Center at museum. She also wanted to thank Mrs. Szlosek for the event. Concerns

o Tina Spada is concerned about some behavior that is occurring in the cafeteria, specifically rude comments to a certain staff member. Mr. Flassig is aware of the issue and steps have been made to help with the problem. Woody Keck motioned to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Meredith Gilbert, passed unanimously.
