Spain - Landscapes of Castile Bike Tour 2018 Individual Self-Guided 8 days / 7 nights A cycling journey into the depths of unexplored Spain. A peaceful journey to discover the raw natural beauty of rural Spain, from the high plateau of Castile into the province of Guadalajara. From the town of Ayllón, in the foothills of the protected Guadarrama Mountains, explore the red stone villages and the medieval town of Riaza. Later head south towards Guadalajara, down the "black slate villages valley". Cycle on to Jadraque, dominated by the impressive "El Cid s Castle" and follow the natural park of the "Rio Dulce Canyon", to reach the unique and magnificent medieval town of Siguenza.
Itinerary Day to Day Day 1: Arrival to Ayllón Arrival and a chance to relax and explore the medieval town center full of noble mansions from the 15th-17th centuries, and its palace and elegant Main Square and town hall. Day 2: Ayllón to Riofrio de Riaza 53 km Bicycle handover and adjustment. Spectacular first route cycling amongst a vast oak woodland, discovering the quirky red stone villages, to visit the medieval town of Riaza, with its fabulous main square, surrounded by colonnades topped with balconies and its gothic church with its renaissance tower. Day 3: Riofrio de Riaza to Camillo de Ranas 39 km An initial push up the Quesera mountain pas takes you into Guadalajara province and a very different landscape of large wooded valleys and the occasional little village, characterized by its traditional architecture using the singular local black slate. The small quiet road descend into the remote Tejera Negra Valey where the stars shine bright at night, away from any light pollution. Day 4: Campillo de Ranas to Cogulludo 36 km Cycle along winding country roads, past interesting towns such as Tamajón and Muriel, with a chance for a swim at the Beleña reservoir. Today s route takes you to Cogolludo where you can enjoy its palace and beautiful main square and inviting restaurants with airy terraces. Day 5: Cogolludo to Jadraque 39 km Wide open spaces as you cycle past many small plateaux through traditional shepherding country. Look out for the solitary shepherd with his heard. After an uphill climb you are rewarded by fantastic views of the surrounding countryside and later descend in to the
Day 6: Jadraque to Sigüenza 43 km Cycle along good country tracks from Jadraque to Pelegrina following the sweet river "RIo Dulce", as it sinks into a spectacular canyon, now a protected natural park where large birds of prey thrive. Take time for an exhilirating dip in its crystal clear waters. After a short cycle ride from here you will reach the impressive historic town of Siguenza. Day 7: Round Trip Siguenza 38 km Time to explore Siguenza s 5th century castle, 12th century cathedral, diocese museum, medieval necropolis and many churches and historic buildings as well as doing a circular cycle tour exploring the surrounding landscape. Day 8: Departure Return to Madrid to fly back home or why not extend your stay in this interesting city?
