SARASOTA COUNTY CROQUET CLUB SINGLES AND DOUBLES CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS FEBRUARY 17-19 and MARCH 16-18 & 21-23, 2012 The SCCC held its eighth annual club singles and doubles championships with sixty-four members competing, some in both events, while some played either singles or doubles only. The weather co-operated throughout the nine days of tournament play, with mostly sunshine and moderately warm days. February did require a few sweaters and long pants however. The play was on three courts at the Venice complex of the Sarasota County Croquet Club First was the doubles competition in February with 25 teams competiting in four flights. The championship winner was determined during the last game of block play when the two top seeds played off that final game. The team of Alan Cottle and Avril Rangoni-Machiavelli took the win by one wicket over Fred and Jackie Jones 15-14. First flight, a field of 6 teams, saw Christine Irwin and Roger Measel top the field with 4 wins and 1 loss, while Dolores Gallagher and Bruce Gillespie took second with 3 wins. Obviously the teams were well matched as three teams ended with 3 wins each. Second flight, fielding 6 teams, ended block play with Joy Bandy and Norm Mulroney and Doug Johnson and Bob Maye, tied with 4 wins. As the title was not to be determined by net points a play-off the on Sunday gave the deciding win to the Joy and Norm, with the Doug and Bob placing second. Third Flight, with 7 teams saw Betty Anne Szuts and Arthur Olsen sweep the field, going undefeated, with five wins to take the win. Gloria Stevens and Ivan Szuts came in second. Trophies were presented to the winners and runner-ups. Singles competition, due to size, was held as two separate events. Championship and First flight played over the week-end of March 16-18, while Second and Third flight played during the next week March 21-23. Forty players competed in four flights to determine the new winners in each category. Championship flight, with 6 players, handicaps ranging from a 1.5 to 2, became a match between Russ Cuccia and Fred Jones, with both going to the final block game, undefeated at four wins each. Both played well but Fred Jones was the victor 19-15, taking the win, with Russ second First flight, with sixteen players, was divided into two blocks with Carl Kruse and Bob McQuinn leading Block One and Bill Cole and Glenn Bennett leading Block Two. A single elimination ladder saw Bob and Carl both go down in the first games. In the final match Bill Cole out lasted Glenn Bennett with a nail biting finish to win by one wicket..

Second flight, with two blocks of five, saw Bob Hacker and Jim Feorino as the block leaders. A four person ladder, quickly took both of them out of the running. Along came Richard Zeck to take a win over Lee Anderson to take the honors. Third flight, originally started with nine but with drop-outs ended at seven. Arthur Olsen and Ron Truman played through the block, each undefeated, with six wins. A playoff netted Arthur the flight championship. With a complete volunteer crew the tournament ran very smoothly, and thanks go to Charlotte Neagle, tournament manager, Fred Jones, tournament director, the grounds crew of Bob Lentz, Ralph Curtis, Roger Measel, and Glenn Bennett, the Kitchen help under the direction of Sue Doherty who insured there was coffee and fixings every morning, and that there was sufficient food to go with the Toast and Tally at the completion of the games at the end of each day.
