Southland Hockey Association SKATER SKILLS Evaluation Criteria Forwards/Backwards M Weave Without Puck M Weave With Puck Agility Skate Start Position Ready with aggressive bent knee posture and weight forward Quick Acceleration Uses short quick initial strides gradually lengthening as player accelerates Control at Speed Good balanced posture with stick under control and weight evenly distributed Bilateral Stopping Stops effectively both ways with good bent knee posture, head and shoulder turn, and uses both edges Turns With Both Edges On 180 degree turns skater should use both feet with inside foot ahead and good knee bend Keeps Feet Moving Feet always engaged without gliding between turns Strong Turns Drives out of turn with power and acceleration Body Position Hockey stance with knees bent and head up. Comfortable through turns with body lean and low stance Controls Puck Puck remains on stick throughout drill including the finish straight. Uses Both Sides of Stick Through the turns and the weave players should use front and back of stick as appropriate Keeps Feet Moving Skates as same time as handling the puck without gliding Cradles Pucks on Turns Cradles and controls puck on 180 degree turns preventing it from drifting away Efficient Transitions Engages edges with weight transfer and quick turn reducing or eliminating scraping and slowing Acclerates Well Following change of direction skater should immediately begin to accelerate either forwards or backwards Aggressiveness Player Doesn t hesitate but rather bends knees, engages edges and pushes through turns and transitions.
