New England Combat News VOLUME 27 NUMBER 1 JUNE 2015 THE CONTROL LINE COMBAT NEWSLETTER OF NEW ENGLAND Now Celebrating our 27th year of Publication 2015 GX Icebreaker BRIAN STAS, NEIL SIMPSON & CHRIS SARNOWSKI ARE TOP THREE May 3, 2015 - WRENTHAM, MA - This was opening day and stop number one on the 2015 GX season schedule. Five contestants were on hand for this event hosted and cd ed by Chris Sarnowski. Weather conditions were wonderful with temps in the mid- seventies, low humidity and sunny with a light breeze. There was no signs of winter rust as the contest was mid-air free with all the pilots giving a good account of themselves. Round one saw Brian Stas get past Paul Kubek with a two cut win while Neil Simpson tried to keep pace with a one cut win over Chris Sarnowski. Brian and Neil faced off in round two with Brian getting the better of it two cuts to one. In the same round Chris got into contention with a two cut win over Rick Clark. Round three was somewhat tranquil with Brian and Chris and later, Neil and Paul flying to one cut apiece draws. In the final round, Neil posted a two cut win early. Chris then out dueled Paul two cuts to one. Neither proved to be enough when Brian, who had a comfortable lead, stayed out of trouble flying Rick to a one cut apiece draw in the final. Thank You to everyone who shared in the judging and thank you to Chris Sarnowski for a yet another good contest. It was great to have Rick Clark back with us after a twelve month lay-off. Rick flew very well exhibiting no signs of rust. GX Shootout - Formula GX Combat 5 contestants (all from MA) 10 Matches-no mid-airs Brian Stas - Kingston, MA Neil Simpson - E. F2D News - May 2015 Mark Rudner rudner@mit.edu Hi everyone. It's been a while, but I wanted to say hi and give a brief update on what's been going on over here in Europe recently. We're currently in the middle of the ``Dreilanderpokal,'' a series of three F2D World Cup contests over the span of four weeks. It's an intense time, with lots of exciting combat. The series started in Bitterfeld, Germany (May 2-3), then moved to Karlskoga, Sweden this past weekend (May 16-17). The final stage will be run this coming weekend in Aalborg, Denmark (May 23-24). At the end of the final contest, an overall Dreilander prize will be given out to the pilot with the best cumulative result. This year we've had good representation from US pilots in the Dreilanderpokal. In addition to me, in Bitterfeld Alex Prokofiev, Andrey Nadein, and Radik Magzianov were all on hand, and all put in very solid performances. I will hold off on the blow-by-blow for another time/venue, but the final results were 1st: Audrius Rastenis (Lithuania), 2nd: Sergey Tsukov (Estonia), 3rd: Mark Rudner (USA). In Karlskoga, Andrey and Alex were back, and this time Chuck Rudner joined in. The site in Karlskoga is beautiful, but the weather was cold (low 40s) and rainy. It definitely wasn't the most comfortable contest of the year. Unfortunately, this time Chuck and I both went out 0-2 (tough weekend...), but Andrey and Alex took first and third, respectively. Dima Varfolomejev of Estonia came in second. I hope to put out a more detailed report soon (possibly in Model Aviation). In the meantime, here are some photos from Karlskoga. Hope to see many of you at the NATS! Alex Prokofiev de-warping wings more photos next page
