It seem to rain for about 24 hours nonstop leading up to the race then stop just before the start of the junior race at 10.30am. The constant rain ensured the course was particularly wet, with Sussex clay ensuring the mud was of the best quality. A scenic location; with the last part or the course running alongside the lakes. Then the final short climb to the finish.. Crowborough Juniors did very well again: First Jasper Baker (Lewes AC), second James McCarthy (Crowborough Runners), third Matthew McCarthy (Crowborough Runners) Crowborough runners seniors came 5 th in the race and we are 5 th out of nine teams overall after three races. First senior team was Lewes AC followed by Hailsham Harriers in second place and Heathfield/Uckfield third

New Year s Day walk 1st Jan 2014 Great turnout in poor conditions Brilliantly hosted by Julie, THANK YOU. 4 of us decided to do a walk rather than join the 15 runners. So led by Archie, a friend of Julie s mother with his two dogs, Denise, Elaine and I set off in the pouring rain over fields to arrive at Palesgate Lane. There was a stream of water running down the right side of the road as we climbed and then turned left into the lane leading to the Oast House. At the top we turned left then left again back onto Palesgate Lane. By the time we reached the railway bridge, the whole road was a stream and at the ford it was an impressive sight to see the water from the road rushing to join the already fast flowing stream (see photo below). A thoroughly wet but enjoyable walk and we then joined the runners and dried out with warm drinks and lots of food at Julie s house. Thank you to Julie and her mother for entertaining us all.

JUNIOR NEWS by Dave H. Following on from a successful 2013 season, I am looking forward to the forthcoming year. The Tuesday night sessions were very well attended last year with up to 50 athletes on some nights. The newly created Saturday group is slowly growing in momentum and what we lack in numbers at the moment is made up by enthusiasm shown by the athletes. We are attracting new members on a regular basis and hope this will continue as we approach the Spring. A special note of thanks to Jane and Nicky for helping with this new initiative. The results at our outings have been very impressive so far. At Firle XC Crowborough managed to achieve a 1-2-3 with sterling performances from Matthew McCarthy (1 st ) James McCarthy(2 nd ) and Joe Allen (3 rd ). This was followed by another good performance at Framfield where we achieved a second (James M) and third(matthew M). This could have been even better had James not stopped at the wrong finishing line!! On January 5th we visited Tonbridge Summerhill School and once more there were strong performances from Joe Allen, Rory and Elliott Keen. On Wednesday 15 th January both Matthew and James ran in the Sussex Schools Cross Country Championships. The first 20 represent the county. Both ran extremely well finishing 25 th and 44 th respectively out of a field of 159. It was particularly disappointing for Matthew as he had not been well prior to the event and only missed out by a few yards. With a good years training I am sure we will see them in County colours next year! Good luck to Joe as well as he will be trying for a Schools County place at Christ s Hospital at the end of February. May I take this opportunity to thank all the Junior coaches who helped out during the past year. We also will have the benefit of 3 new Level 2 coaches by summer and this will be a great asset to the club. Matt and James If anybody can help out at some of our Junior sessions whether it be a Tuesday or Saturday then please contact myself or Katerina. Also there is funding available for new coaches to attend courses and should you be interested please feel free to contact me.

CLUB NEWS Maggi and Brenda do it again! Congratulations to Maggi and Brenda, our prize winners in the 2013 Sussex Grand Prix Running Series. Maggi was 3 rd lady in the V5 category and Brenda was 3 rd lady V7 it is at least the FIFTH year in a row that they have both won prizes, which is a fantastic achievement. My records do not go back any further than 2009 so maybe it is even more than 5 in a row. It is also the fifth year in the row that the ladies have won prizes and not a single man has won one. Come on, guys, surely one of you can break into the prizes this year? The awards presentation will be, as usual, at the Jack and Jill pub in Clayton on Friday 7 th February. There will be free snacks and nibbles. Can anyone wanting to attend please let me know so that I can co-ordinate car sharing. Roger The prize giving for 2013 will be held at the Jack & Jill pub in Clayton on Friday February 7th food will be provided. Ostend to Bruges 10 mile race: Sunday, 2nd March. We plan to do a Bruges weekend again - share a car and a room and it's a cheap weekend. Ostend to Bruges is a well organised fast and flat 10 mile race mainly on traffic free towpaths. It s their 21st anniversary race: http://www.oostendebruggetenmiles.be/en/menu.php?doc_inst=7 Chocolate to die for!! http://visitbruges.be/ Race entry 13.50 includes bus to start (Ostend), T shirt and free Belgian beer and cake. Car share too - please contact James if you are interested by January 21st. Further afield... Salzburg Marathon and other races, Austria, on May 4th. It won't be a waltz but the hills will be alive with the sound of running and it's a beautiful place with lots to see incl Mozart s House, castles etc and the cakes are to die for. There are a variety of races to choose from incl: marathon, half marathon, 10K and relay race plus a breakfast run. Marathon course has PB potential - it is actually very flat. BA fly direct from LGW and Ryanair / The Luftwaffe go there from STN. Train also a possibility. If you are interested you might want to have a chat with James. http://www.salzburg-marathon.at/bin/sam_default/index.php http://www.salzburg-marathon.at/bin/sam_marathon/races.php

Hi I am doing London in April and have chosen to run for Bliss as both of my babies were premature so not sure if anyone wants to sponsor me!:) Regards Nicky Beginners & Improvers. We now have a core group of about 12 who currently attend the Monday sessions on and around the track. Two of our runners, Sophie Cheek and Lucie Rexstrew completed their first 5K race before Christmas taking on the Tonbridge Park run (below). And didn't they do well. Some of the group have also moved up to the Wednesday run and some Sunday runs. Please spread the word as we welcome anybody even if they have not done any running. It s amazing how quickly the body can adapt and start increasing distances. Also, if you have been injured and want a more gentle session than Tuesday, feel free to attend on Monday. You will also be given just as hard a session as Sid's if you want (say, if you can't make the Tuesday one week)!

MOTHER MARY SAYS... LET S GET SOME GOOD PRESS COVERAGE IN 2014 Having had a few articles printed in The Courier recently it would be great if we could continue the coverage and help raise the profile of the club locally by getting a regular spot. This is where I need your help: please send me results and a good photo of any races you have done, along with interesting facts e.g. the location; good results (a PB or a good placing); money raised for charity; particularly challenging nature of the event or other noteworthy details. I don t need an essay, just a few bullet points is fine and I will do the rest. Photos needs to be good quality, from a camera not a mobile phone, ideally with lots of smiley faces and all in club colours. Give me names from left to right in the pic. If there are children in the pic you must have the parents consent to publish. Copy needs to be fresh and newsworthy so don t hang about email me by Monday evening for that Friday s issue. A word of caution the article can be edited by the newspaper to fit the space, sometimes altering the sense of the piece and headlines are applied by them, not me! Thank you and I look forward to receiving your contributions. Mary Mary.nightingale@virgin.net

Sunday Runs and Water Rota - Jan 2014 If you have been a member of Crowborough Runners for a while, you will no doubt know all about the water rota. But we are delighted that we have quite a number of new members of the club (welcome to all of you) and so bear with us while we explain the system again. We ask all members to take their turn on the water rota (rota for 2014 is below). It involves driving your car round to provide water for those doing the club run on a Sunday morning and also giving a lift back to anyone who is unable to complete the training run. It normally takes 2 hours but sometimes a bit more. Water equipment is provided (container and plastic cups) and someone on the run will organise the route and agree with you the meeting places for water so all you need to do is: if you cannot make the date you have been allocated, please arrange to swap dates with someone else arrange with the previous person on the list to collect the water kit from them make sure the container is clean and fill it up with water beforehand turn up at the start of the run (mostly 8:30am from the leisure centre) drive to each of the meeting points and hand out water to the runners when they arrive the optional purchase of a packet of jelly babies to offer to runners with the water is much appreciated hand over the water kit to the next person on the list We are trying to ensure that the Sunday runs are suitable for everyone, varying the type of course (on road and off road) and length. The traditional length is 10 miles, but there will be some 6 and 8 mile routes as well as some optional add-ons for those who want to run further, particularly during the spring marathon training season. Can faster runners please note that you should run back to behind the slowest runner from time to time to allow re-grouping. This is particularly true at water stops where runners should arrive together so everyone can have time to take a drink and the same amount of rest before setting off again. This means everyone runs for the same amount of time, with faster runners covering more distance. Obviously if runners want to run for a longer time than the normal 1½ - 2 hours, they will have to the extra time without the group in these cases, it makes sense to ask around and arrange to buddy with someone else who is also doing a longer run. The club Sunday runs are not held on the days of popular races (Sussex Grand prix races, East Sussex cross country league, London and Brighton Marathon) so there are about 30 each year, which means your turn only comes round every 12-18 months. If for any reason you cannot or are not willing to take part in the rota, you must let Bryan and Roger know so that we can take you off the list. Thanks to everyone for participating. It makes Sunday runs more sociable and enjoyable, helps beginners to build up their distances and more experienced runners to put in some solid training. If you have any questions, please contact either of us. Bryan and Roger
