WHAT DOES THE PROJECT DO? The Frontier-Zambia Chimpanzee Conservation project aims to promote ethical tourism in this wonderful part of Africa by supporting the work of this local wildlife sanctuary and maximising the positive impact of our team of volunteers. This award winning project is one of the largest chimpanzee sanctuaries in the world! Chimpanzees were once ubiquitous throughout equatorial Africa but relentless poaching, logging, habitat destruction and the illegal bush meat trade have reduced population numbers dramatically. Now classified as endangered the conservation of these charismatic primates is paramount to ensure their survival in their natural environment. This project aims to rescue and rehabilitate as many orphaned and injured chimpanzees as possible and is an incredible opportunity to make a significant impact on the lives of these fascinating, friendly and wonderful animals. WHAT WILL I BE DOING? The orphanage cares for a myriad of different species but the primary residents are orphaned chimpanzees. Volunteers responsibilities may include assisting with ongoing research activities, gathering data, designing and creating behavioural enrichment initiatives, helping out with the day to day maintenance of the sanctuary and contributing to the self sufficiency of the sanctuary by helping out at the on site farm which produces food for the resident wildlife. Specific volunteer itineraries will depend upon the needs of the animals and the sanctuary at the time of your visit but will include a range of responsibilities such as preparing food, maintaining enclosures and feeding the animals. The research activities may see you focusing on the social dynamics of chimpanzee communities, such as helping to collect photographic and video footage of infants or high anking male chimpanzees. You will gather character and age data about individuals to help build up an identification system which will also contribute to improving sanctuary information guides, family trees and literature for the education centre. Another major part of your work will be to create enrichment activities for the chimpanzees to keep them both physically and mentally active. You can bring some creativity to this role as you develop and construct challenges and toys which help to keep the chimpanzees stimulated. In addition to the animal care work your contribution to the self sufficiency of the centre by tending to the fruit tree garden and working on the farm will help to reduce costs and increase independence by generating additional sources of revenue for the sanctuary. Whatever your contribution you are sure to have an unforgettable experience as you contribute to the goals of this amazing conservation programme! WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE? You will be met upon arrival at Ndola International Airport by a local staff representative who will accompany you to the sanctuary. Please arrive before 1:00pm on the Monday. The journey to the sanctuary takes approximately 4 hours. The local staff will help you settle in to your new home and relax before your project begins.
WHERE WILL I BE STAYING? You will be staying for the duration of your project in shared dormitory style accommodation within the sanctuary grounds with your fellow volunteers. You will share bathroom facilities with hot water available at certain times of the day. Your accommodation will be basic but of course clean and comfortable. Enjoy living in authentic surroundings with Zambia's incredible wildlife right on your doorstep! In the evenings the housing set up will provide the perfect surroundings to relax and absorb the Zambian night air. WHAT WILL I BE EATING? You will be provided with three meals per day with a buffet style breakfast and a packed lunch to take with you on your rounds. You will receive a cooked meal in the evening which you will enjoy while overlooking the sanctuary. You will have the opportunity to sample a variety of Zambia s delicious food, for example fresh fish, vegetables and fruit, and maize-based dishes such asnsima, a thick porridge rolled into a ball and dipped into a variety of meat stews and relishes. Another national speciality to try is Ibatwu, a feisty drink made with fermented roots.
