FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS My son turns 5 in October 2016, can he join then? No, sorry, he needs to be 5 on the 30th September to join for that season. He will be able to join the following season. My child is currently 11 (12 in January 2017), what age group will he be in? The age group that your child is, is the age they are as at the 30th September, therefore your child was 11 on the 30th Sept 2016 (turning 12 in January) and therefore is classed as being in the Under 12 age group (even though they turn 12 during the season). Can I drop my children at nippers and leave? No, it is absolutely necessary that a parent or designated guardian is at the beach during the entire duration of nippers. I have 3 children and can t be with all groups at the same time? That is fine. Parents of U6 & U7 children need to be with their group at all times. Parents of U8-14s just need to inform the Age Manager where they will be if they are not going to be with the group. My friend s birthday puts him in a different age group. Can they be together? Sorry we need to obey the policies set by SLSA that children are put into groups where their birthday falls - they will be able to make new friends and still be able to socialize before & after. How often do I bring my child to the beach? Our Nipper Days are held each Sunday (start 18th Sept - 5th March with a few weeks off over Christmas). We understand that families are busy so the program doesn t require 100% participation but your child will benefit from regular attendance. We also have mid-week specialized training sessions available to those who wish to improve their skills and fitness. Check the email newsletters and club notice board What does my child need? Club cap and high visibility rash shirts are compulsory. Togs, water bottle, towel, goggles, sunscreen. Check out the apparel on pages 20-21 What do children do in Surf Life Saving? Depending on their age group, Children will cover sprints and flags, swimming, board paddling, wading, basic CPR/ first aid skills, junior development and lots of FUN activities. They will also learn surf lifesaving skills, surf awareness, and 12 intrinsically develop personal and emotional skills.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Junior Awards what are these for my child? Each age group award has sessions that they participate in to acquire relevant skills and knowledge. They will need to attend and participate in all of the compulsory sessions to attain the award. They must also complete the pool and Beach Evaluation to obtain the award. Does my child have to be able to swim? Yes, for U8-U14 age groups as they need to complete their Pool Evaluation including a swim and a float. U6 & U7s need to show competency in the pool. This is carried out before participating in any Junior Activities session to assess their swimming and self survival ability in the water. This will determine whether they can progress to Junior Activities. They will then be required to complete a Beach Evaluation (Run- Swim-Run) to participate in water activities. The next step is for them to train to complete their Competition Evaluation which allows them to compete at inter-club carnivals. Only those who wish to compete are required to complete the Competition Evaluation. Is this a learn to swim program? No. Although your child will benefit enormously and increase their confidence from exposure to open water based activities including swimming and board paddling. We do not provide specific learn to swim training or stroke correction. This is strongly encouraged to be taken up externally. What can I do to help? Parents can become involved in many areas of Club activity. Areas can include helping at Sunday nipper days (Beach setup/pack down, helping run activities, being an age observer) carnival officiating, first aid officer, fundraising, providing water safety at Sunday nippers, training and carnivals (if you gain your Bronze Medallion), most of all supporting your child in their Junior Activities. All courses are covered in your Junior Associative membership. What happens when my child finishes all the various Junior Activities age groups and awards? The Junior Development Program is designed to gradually introduce your child into the role of a qualified Surf Lifesaver and assist in patrolling the beaches. They can continue to be involved in a variety of competition events if desired. They will undertake various other awards and learn many facets of community service involvement. They can be taught specialist areas of competition and compete both at a state and a national level. 13

MEMBER SAFETY Our club endeavors to provide the safest environment for all members participating in club activities to ensure minimal injury. This is done through complying with SLSA Water Safety Policies, providing high quality water safety services and having club contingency plans in place. Several measures have been established to ensure minimum risk. The Chief Water Safety Officer or Junior Coach will complete a risk assessment before each activity commences which will also be monitored throughout the activities by the Age Managers. Identify hazards - rips, shallow bank, dumping waves, debris Assess the risk - is the surf too dangerous? Determine measures - will certain children/groups stay out of water? Review, apply and monitor - have the conditions become worse? Water Safety - that minimum Water Safety ratios are met and adhered to It is important to respect the decision of the Age Manager or coach if they have limited your time or distance in the water. Water Safety Risk Management Strategy Water Safety s aim is to - * Minimise nippers losing their craft * Minimise nippers bumping into each other * Ensuring the nippers ability can handle the conditions * Encourage and guide members in the water * Attend to any incidents if needed Safety Signals - Nippers SAFETY SIGNAL - ASSISTANCE NOT REQUIRED It is a good idea to have a safe signal such as THUMBS UP between a nipper and water safety to ensure the nipper is ok, in the case where they may lose their board or dumped by a wave. SAFETY SIGNAL - ASSISTANCE REQUIRED Remind nippers that if they do get into trouble and need assistance, the signal is to put their arm straight up and remain calm (treading water and taking deep breaths) until help arrives If you have any concerns over the safety of your child, please see our Water Safety Officer - Shannon Van Balen or Junior Co-ordinator, Tiarne Smith. 14

INCIDENT RESPONSE In the event of an incident such as a missing person or emergency, there is a process that has been devised that all members should be made aware of. Sunday Nipper Days Each Age group will have an Observer who will be overseeing water activities from the beach. They will carry a bag which will include an air horn, small first aid kit, roll call sheets and the Water Safety Guidelines booklet including the rescue response checklist. In an emergency, the observer will raise the alarm by sounding the air horn. This is the signal for all nippers & water safety to return to shore. Nippers are to assemble for roll call at their age group flag. No parents are to be near the children or take their child until approved by the roll caller. Water safety members are to head to the area where the horn has been sounded & await instruction from the WSO who will instigate the SAR plan. SURF SAFETY & EDUCATION The majority of surf education will be provided on the beach, not in a class room or formal environment (except the SRC / Resuscitation course for the older age groups). The best way to teach surf safety is through physical demonstrations, drills/exercises and visual aids (such as spotting a rip). Please note our Junior Activities Program is not a learn to swim program. We strongly encourage your child to attend swim lessons. Being confident swimming in a pool contributes immensely to being confident swimming in the ocean. 15

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT & BENEFITS OF BEING A MEMBER For more information, please read our Junior Activities Parent Guide We are a family club & we need the help of every family to share the workload so that we can continue to maintain a high standard & enjoyable environment for everyone. Running a successful club of this size only comes from the ongoing commitment of volunteers and help offered by parents. Please note the following expectations the club requires from their nipper parents. As a parent or guardian you are REQUIRED to be at the beach at all times during Sunday activities. Your child remains your responsibility. Medication, trips to the toilet and the individual general welfare of each child on Northcliffe beach is the responsibility of the parent / guardian. Nippers is NOT a child minding program. U6 & U7s nipper parents need to be with the age group at all times. It is club policy that at least one parent registers as a member (Associative). You are then able to assist with beach and water based activities, (see below) At all times, abide by the Member Code of Conduct (see notice board at club) It is of great importance that BMD Northcliffe has a depth of personnel to call on during activities to provide our junior members a safe, educational surf awareness program whilst developing their skills. Officials Help with the running of the carnivals either by judging, marshalling competitors, presenting medals, recording results or starting races. You will need to complete a Level 1 Surf Official course. 3 hours course, plus practical component at a carnival. Course - 7th November Water Safety Water safety mainly spend their time monitoring nippers in the water/shoreline on nipper days and/or carnivals either on rescue boards, swimming with tubes/ fins You need to have either a current Surf Rescue Certificate or Bronze Medallion 1 week course (4 full days plus exam), or 8 week course (Sunday mornings 4.5hrs) Observer Required for Sunday Nipper days, observers keep an eye on water activities from the beach of their Age Group. You will need to complete an Observer Certificate course. (2 hour course) Beach Setup Task Force Responsible for the set up / pack up of equipment at carnivals and nipper days Depending on the amount of volunteers we have, you may be asked to help on a few nipper days setting up and/or putting away of equipment and/or at a carnival. We are always looking for parents to help with a variety of tasks. Please don't hesitate to put your hand up and ask your Age Manager if they need any help. You will need to hold a current working with children Blue card. Please see Tiarne for forms if needed. 19
