INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS GAME NOTES GAME #95 / Road Game #49 Indianapolis Indians (48-46) at Rochester Red Wings (35-59) Saturday, July 17, 2010 -- First Pitch @ 6:05 p.m. EDT Frontier Field -- Rochester, N.Y. Indians RHP Charlie Morton (1-3, 4.50 ERA) vs. Red Wings RHP Matt Fox (4-7, 4.44 ERA) ---- TONIGHT S TRIBE STARTER: Tonight s probable starting pitcher for Indianapolis, Charlie Morton, looks to snap a personal three-game winless streak when he toes the rubber against the Rochester Red Wings this evening... In his last three starts, all of which have come against West Division opponents (two against the Columbus Clippers and one against the Louisville Bats), Morton has allowed 16 total runs (10 ER) on 20 hits and seven walks in 14.1 innings of work en route to a 0-2 record and a 6.28 ERA during that span... In his most recent outing, a July 9 appearance against the Clippers, Morton allowed season-highs in runs (seven) and hits (nine) and Indianapolis saw two five-run advantages including a 5-0 lead with no one out in the top of the first inning evaporate as Columbus defeated the Tribe 10-9... Prior to Morton s three-game winless streak, the right-hander turned in his best start of the 2010 campaign against the Durham Bulls on June 24 when he tossed the third complete game of his professional baseball career en route to his first Triple-A victory this season... The right-hander s last three outings, during which time he has allowed 20 hits, have raised his batting average against numbers from a more than respectable.233 to where they stand now at.265 (41-for-155)... Despite his recent struggles, Morton has held right-handed batters to a miniscule.202 batting average against (17-for-84) and has been able to successfully limit the damage inflicted upon him late in innings by holding batters to a.214 average (6-for-28) with runners on with two outs as well as a.235 average (4-for-17) with runners in scoring position with two outs... Morton has also posted notable home and road splits, as the right-hander has gone 1-1 with a 3.06 ERA (6 ER in 17.2 IP) in three starts at home, while he has yet to earn a victory away from Victory Field (0-2) where his road ERA (5.75, 13 ER in 20.1 IP) is nearly twice as high as his home ERA... Morton last faced the Rochester Red Wings in 2008 as a member of the then Richmond Braves and posted a 1-0 record and a 1.74 ERA (2 ER on 10 hits in 10.1 IP) in two starts. TONIGHT S OPPOSING STARTER: Set to oppose Morton in tonight s contest is Red Wings starter Matt Fox, who squared off against the Tribe in his second start of the season on May 12 after logging 11 of his first 12 appearances out of the bullpen... In his only start against the Indians this season, Fox was strapped with his first loss of the year after allowing three runs on three hits in 3.1 innings of work... After posting a 3-0 record heading into his May 12 start against Indianapolis, Fox has since recorded a 1-7 record in his last 11 starts for the Red Wings... The Rochester right-hander has also experienced a personal winless stretch spanning his last nine starts for the Red Wings, during which time Fox has posted a 0-5 record... Fox last earned a victory against the Norfolk Tides on May 22 when he allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits in six innings of work... Before making the transition to the starting rotation, Fox posted brilliant numbers out of the Red Wings bullpen, going 2-0 with a 1.89 ERA (4 ER in 19.0 IP) in 11 games... The right-hander hasn t enjoyed the same success as a starter thus far this season, as he has posted a 2-7 record to go along with a 5.28 ERA (34 ER on 67 hits in 58.0 IP) in 13 starts... While Fox has held opposing batters to a.265 average (79-for-298), he has excelled when facing right-handed hitters (.232 average, 39-for-168) as well as with runners in scoring position with two outs (.231 average, 9-for-39) and when he s ahead in the count (.207 average, 18-for-87)... Prior to this season, Fox had not faced the Tribe in his professional baseball career. MOSS CONTINUES TO MASH: In a season that has seen a number of the Pittsburgh Pirates top prospects promoted to the Major League-level from Triple-A Indianapolis, Tribe OF Brandon Moss has quietly put together a strong 2010 campaign... Among all current Indians position players, Moss ranks first in games played (86), at-bats (311), runs scored (42), hits (79), doubles (18), home runs (11), RBI (51), total bases (132) and stolen bases (8)... Additionally, with his three RBI effort in last night s 6-5 loss against the Rochester Red Wings, Moss now ranks tied for eighth in the International League in RBI with 51. HITS APLENTY: Following last night s 15-hit outburst, four Indians batters extended their hitting streaks to at least five games in length... Leading the Tribe s hitting streak parade is Alex Presley, who has collected a hit in eight straight contests, during which time the outfielder has posted a.367 average (11-for-30) with three runs scored, three doubles, three walks and two stolen bases... Fellow OF Brandon Moss has hit.387 (12-for-31) with five runs scored, two doubles, one home run, eight RBI and one stolen base during his seven-game hitting streak for the Tribe... Another Indians OF, Jonathan Van Every, has put together a five-game hitting streak for Indianapolis, recording a single hit (.263 average, 5-for-19) in five straight contests to go along with four runs scored, three home runs, six RBI and two walks... Rounding out the hit streak list for the Indians is INF Akinori Iwamura, who has also collected at least one hit in five consecutive contests, during which time he has hit.381 (8-for-21) with three runs scored, one double, four RBI and two base on balls. BUCKING THE TRENDS: Entering last night s contest, the Indianapolis Indians had posted a 12-1 record when recording 13 or more hits and an equally impressive 36-13 record when scoring first... The Tribe jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top half of the first inning, and, by the game s conclusion, had recorded 15 total hits, but in spite of these numbers (and the Tribe s previous successes when reaching those benchmarks), the Rochester Red Wings were able to pull out a 6-5 win over the Tribe... Fittingly, the Indians have also posted an 11-13 record in contests decided by one run. RARING TO GO AGAINST ROCHESTER: In their six contests against the Rochester Red Wings this season, the Indians have hit.299 (63-for-211) with 35 runs scored, 19 doubles, four triples, four home runs, 33 RBI and 26 walks... On the offensive side of things, two current Indians batters have posted impres sive numbers against the Red Wings, as C Luke Carlin has batted.308 (4-for-13) with three runs scored, one double, two RBI and four walks in four games, while INF/OF Kevin Melillo has hit.467 (7-for-15) with three doubles and two RBI in five games... On the mound, three current Tribe relievers LHPs Justin Thomas and Wil Ledezma and RHP Vinnie Chulk have each held Rochester scoreless in their appearances against the North Division squad. WALK THIS WAY: As a team Indianapolis batters have drawn an International League-best 374 walks this season... The Tribe s 374 free passes place them 16 ahead of the South Division-leading Durham Bulls, who have drawn 358 base on balls... The Indians are one of only five IL teams to have drawn 300-plus walks this season and have been astoundingly issued at least 100 more base on balls than Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Lehigh Valley, Toledo, Norfolk, Buffalo, Charlotte and Louisville who has a whopping 136 less walks than the Tribe this season.
