Family Fun Day Carole Fullerton and Sharon Jeroski Illustrated by Félix Girard

Hey, welcome to my favourite park! I love to come here with my family, and today is a special day. It's been 100 years since Pacific View Park opened. I bet you'll see lots of things to count and lots of ways to count them! There are many special things to do and see and eat! One of my favourite foods to eat at the park has sauce, spices, and lots of cheese. Can you guess what it is? 2 3

It's pizza! Some people are having a delicious snack. I can count the pieces by 10s. It looks as though there is enough for everyone. How much pizza do you think each person can have? It's a sunny day, but I can hear a crashing noise. It's not thunder, so what can it be? 4 5

It's outdoor bowling! This looks fun. I think I could knock all of the pins down if I really tried! Who do you think is winning here? Not far away I see people with boats, but they're not near any water. I wonder what the boats are for. 6 7

Oh the boats are for sushi. That's a Japanese dish made with raw fish, vegetables, and sometimes fruit. My favourite is the salmon and mango roll. I love the colours. But I'm still learning to use chopsticks. They can be tricky! How can you count the sushi on these trays? How else? Something fun is happening near the beach. Can you guess what it is from this riddle? I love to dance and twist and prance. But I shake when I get up in the sky. 8 9

People are flying kites! The part that hangs from a kite is called the tail. A kite's tail helps the kite to balance and to face into the wind. It's really windy, so I see a lot of kites in the park today! What things can you count in this picture? I smell something delicious over by that food cart. It smells like meat and vegetables and... I can't wait I've got to find out what it is! 10 11

Wow, it's dim sum! I love how the food is arranged on the platters. It reminds me of dominoes. I hear the ocean nearby, and see lots of people digging in the sand. Do you think they've lost something? 12 13

No, they're building sandcastles! My friends and I love to make sandcastles at the beach. We work together to build them, and decorate them with shells we find. Then, when the tide comes in, we watch the castles disappear. How many shells can you count in each tower? Walking on the beach has sure made me hungry. I wonder if there are treats anywhere close by... 14 15

Yum desserts! Last summer my auntie and I made frozen pops like these. We mixed fruit and yogurt in the blender. Then we poured the mix into an ice-cube tray and froze it. We made 8 pops, and that was lots for my auntie, my sister, and me. How do you think 3 people could share 8 frozen pops? I hear the sounds of stones dropping and feet skipping. I wonder what else is happening in the park today... 16 17

They're playing the "Get to 100!" hopscotch game. We play that at school. You have to hop from one number to another. The sum of the two numbers has to be 100. Sarah's standing on 75. What number should she jump onto to get to 100? It's such a hot day and I'm so thirsty. What I need is something nice and cold... 18 19

Ah, there's David's Drinks! I love those cold drinks. Each one is fresh and delicious! I have 5 dollars left hmmm, what can I get? I've seen people going by with paint on their hands. Some have red paint and some have blue. What's that all about? 20 21

It was Mr. Kim's idea to make this cool banner. We can paint our hand and then make a handprint on the banner. There will be one handprint for each of the park's 100 years. How many of each colour do you think there could be? It will be dark before long. I'm going to meet up with my cousins now. What will end this special day? 22 23
