SURREY CCC YOUTH ASSESSMENTS 2015 U-10 to U-17 (in 2016 season) Surrey CCC working in partnership with Surrey s cricket clubs and schools to develop the next generation of Surrey cricketers

SURREY CCC s YOUTH ASSESSMENTS 2015 Player Pathway This document has been produced by Surrey CCC s Performance Department to help spread the word amongst cricket clubs and schools across Surrey about our upcoming Assessments, to which promising young cricketers can be nominated to attend. The following pages explain some of the key programmes that Surrey CCC s Performance Department organise and how they fit together into the Player Pathway, which the most promising young cricketers progress through on their way to potentially becoming professional cricketers. If you know of any promising young cricketers with the potential to join our Player Pathway, please do nominate them for an Assessment. Likewise, please do circulate this information to relevant people within your school or cricket club so we can see as many talented young cricketers at the Assessments. Best wishes, Surrey CCC s Performance Department Gareth Townsend, Academy Director Richard Bedbrook, Performance Manager Tom Benge, Performance Manager Dave Sheppard, Performance Administrator Jeremy Greaves, Centres Manager Simon Talbot, Centre Coach Katherine Robson, Centres Administrator SURREY CCC PLAYER PATHWAY PROFESSIONAL CRICKET SURREY ACADEMY EMERGING PLAYER PROGRAMME (EPP) COUNTY AGE GROUP (CAG) U-9 TO U-17 DISTRICT CRICKET U-9 TO U-14 PERFORMANCE COURSES U-8 TO U-10 JUNIOR COACHING COURSES U-6 TO U-16 ENGLAND CRICKET PATHWAY ENGLAND ENGLAND PERFORMANCE PROGRAMME / ENGLAND LIONS ENGLAND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME (EDP) EMERGING TALENT PROGRAMME (ETP) Surrey CCC, The Kia Oval, Kennington, London SE11 5SS Tel: 020 7820 5734 Fax: 020 7820 5601 Email: performance@surreycricket.com CRICKET CLUBS & SCHOOLS This diagram shows the potential pathway for a young cricketer in Surrey towards the professional game. SURREY CCC s YOUTH ASSESSMENTS 2015 U-10 to U-15 (in 2016 season) U-11 to U-15 (in 2016 season) Now is the time to nominate your promising U-11 to U-15 cricketers. This summer Surrey CCC s Performance Department will, once again, be running a series of assessments to which cricket clubs and schools in the county can nominate their promising players. A nomination form is at the end of this document. Those players nominated to us by cricket clubs and schools will be invited to a specific Phase 1 Assessment - along with a number of young cricketers already part of our District Cricket programme. These assessments are the first stage in identifying players for selection into particular winter-training squads next winter, as follows: District winter-training squads at U-11, U-12, U-13 and U-14 ages in each of the five Districts (East, West, Central, Inner London and Outer London) County Age Group (CAG) winter-training squads at U-11, U-12, U-13, U-14 and U-15 ages In 2015 we will be holding all of the Phase 1 Assessments at the Surrey CCC Indoor Cricket Centre at George Abbot School. Due to the overall number of players that will be observed at this stage (around 700) we need to ensure that we can complete the process in the time we have available. We are now unable to cater for rain delays and so to ensure the process runs smoothly we will operate all assessment sessions indoors. A number of players from Phase 1 Assessments will be subsequently invited to attend a further round of Assessments (Phase 2 Assessments). These will be held indoors in October & November 2015. The Phase 2 Assessments will also be attended by a number of players who were involved in the CAG set-up this summer. Following completion of the Phase 2 Assessments we will be in a position to confirm 2016 District and County winter-training squads (all of which commence their programmes from January 2016). U-10 (in 2016 season) We are also interested in receiving nominations about talented U-10 players for next season. These young players will also be invited to Phase 1 Assessments. However, as we do not organize winter-training on a CAG & District Cricket basis at this young age group, the outcome of the assessments will be a number of players being selected into particular winter-training Performance Course. There are no Phase 2 Assessments at the U-10 age group. There are pre-christmas (October & November 2015) Performance Courses and post-christmas (January to March 2016) Performance Courses for U-10 players. Assessment Pathway (U-11 to U-15 in 2016 season) Certain players invited to Phase 2 Assessments Phase Two Assessments (Oct/Nov 2015) Invitation by SCCC only Phase One Assessments (Aug/Sep 2015) Nomination Form required Certain players provisionally identified as District players Certain players selected into CAG or District wintertraining squads Club Cricket/SCCC s Junior Coaching Courses Provisional District Winter Training Squads Certain players steered towards Junior Courses and Club Cricket Certain players from provisional list who are not selected into final District squads Certain players selected into District winter-training squads CAG Winter Training Squads (Dec 2015-Apr 2016) District Winter Training Squads (Jan-Apr 2016) Confirmation of CAG and District selection will be made in early December 2015

Places cannot be guaranteed for nominations received after the deadline. All players nominated will receive confirmation of their Assessment date, including full details of what will happen on the day. Details of the Assessment dates in 2015 are below and are relevant to the age group that the player will be in the 2016 season: U-10 Sunday 30th August 2015 U-11 Monday 24th August 2015 U-12 Tuesday 25th August 2015 U-13 Wednesday 26th August 2015 U-14 Thursday 27th August 2015 U-15 Friday 28th August 2015 There will be other sessions through September 2015 for players who are unavailable for their specific date. Those players should still be nominated so that they can be contacted regards a later assessment date. Surrey CCC s U-16 & U-17 Assessments (in 2016 season) Current U-15 and U-16 cricketers (in 2015 season) should be nominated using the same nomination form for specific assessment sessions to be held in January 2016. Players nominated for these assessments should feel they have the necessary attributes to play at U-16 / 17 County Age Group representative levels, with the ability to progress within the Player Pathway towards the Academy Programme. Please complete and return a nomination form; players will receive confirmation of their assessment session in due course (likely to be closer to January 2016). Surrey CCC s Youth Assessments Phase 2 (October/November 2015) Aim: To assess nominated players to: Identify and select players to attend 2016 CAG winter training programmes (U-11 to U-15 age groups) Identify and select players to attend 2016 District winter training programmes (U-11 to U-14 age groups) Who: Ages U-11 to U-15 (in 2016 season) Players identified from Phase 1 Assessments Nominations from CAG Coaches/Managers of key players from 2015 summer match play programme (this does not exclusively mean the winter training squad prior to that particular season) Other players to attend Phase 2 Assessments will have been selected from Phase 1 Assessments, or will have been recommended by District Managers on the back of high quality performances throughout the District Cricket competition. When: Phase 2 Assessments will take place over the following dates, dependent on the relevant age group: Sundays: 11th, 18th, 25th October 2015 & 1st, 8th, 15th November 2015* *Dates are subject to final confirmation How: CAG Management teams will recommend which players from the 2015 winter-training squad (and those who represented the CAG team during the 2015 summer) should attend Phase 2 Assessments. Players recommended for Phase 2 Assessments are likely to have played the majority of CAG fixtures during the 2015 season.

AN INTRODUCTION TO SURREY CCC S JUNIOR COACHING COURSES Outcome of Assessments All parents, players and nominators should understand that by attending an assessment, two outcomes are possible. Players will either be selected into the Surrey CCC Player Pathway, or not. All involved should understand that some of these decisions will be difficult due to the similarities between players at the boundaries of our programmes. We operate an open-door policy on selection and will be very happy to see players not selected on this occasion at future assessments. Players develop at different rates and therefore players have the ability to improve over time, which we are keen to be aware of. We wish all players to ensure that they develop a love of the game in order to stay involved in the sport for as long as they can, at whatever level their potential takes them to. The outcome of a player s Phase 1 Assessment will be communicated to them by email, once all the Phase 1 Assessment days have been concluded. The final assessment day is planned for 20th September 2015 and following a period of time to process the data, it is hoped that players will be contacted by 12th October 2015. Winter Coaching Programme Junior Courses (U-6 to U-16) Surrey CCC s Development Department organise a programme of coaching courses for U-6s to U-16s. These coaching courses are open to all children, of all abilities, and teach the basic skills of batting, bowling and fielding through group coaching and games. They are 10-week courses that take place both pre-christmas (October to December) and post-christmas (January to March) and are run at venues throughout the county. The emphasis is on developing confidence, skills and an enjoyment of the game. A range of Junior Courses are also run during school holidays (Summer, Easter, half-terms and Christmas). If young cricketers on these courses (ages U-11 upwards) are considered to have the potential to play District Cricket their details will be forwarded to the Performance Department and onto the relevant District Manager. Performance Courses (U-8 & U-9) These courses are advanced post-christmas coaching courses, run over 10-weeks (January to March) to which we invite the most promising U-8 & U-9 cricketers from pre-christmas Junior Courses, as well as a number of those who played U-9 Inner-County or CAG cricket in the preceding summer. Performance Courses are one of the primary means of identifying players who may have the potential to play District and/or County Age Group cricket at U-9. The most promising U-8 & U-9 year-olds from the post-christmas Performance Courses (as well as any other promising players identified on post-christmas Junior Courses) will be recommended for and the U-9 Performance squads For further information about these courses, including details on this coming winter s programme, (starting October 2015) please visit www.surreycricketfoundation.org. Women and Girls Cricket Surrey CCC organise a girls CAG (County Age Group) cricket programme, as well as a Senior Women side. There are two phases of Assessments for selection into girls CAG winter-training squads at each of the following age groups: U-11, U-13 & U-15. The initial phase will be held on Sunday 30th August 2015; an Assessment document and Nomination Form will be circulated shortly to cricket clubs and schools. It will also be downloadable from surreyperformance.co.uk. A number of players from the initial phase of Assessments will be invited to a second phase of Assessments, to be held in November 2015. From those Assessments we will select final CAG wintertraining squads. We also organise girls cricket at U-17. Assessments for that squad take place in early January 2016. For further information about Girls CAG cricket please email performance@surreycricket.com.

SURREY CCC S YOUTH ASSESSMENTS 2015 Junior organisers at schools and/or cricket clubs in Surrey should use this form to nominate promising young cricketers that they consider to be of representative cricket ability. Players currently playing District or CAG cricket in 2015 season need not be nominated, as District and CAG coaches will put them forward automatically to either Phase 1 or Phase 2 Assessments. Phase 1 Assessments for selection into 2016 District and CAG winter-training programmes The nominated players should be aged between U-10 and U-14 during the 2015 season (i.e. be born between 1st September 2000 and 31st August 2005), in other words be aged between U-11 and U-15 during the 2016 season. U-16 & U-17 (in 2016 season) Assessment The nominated players should be aged between U-15 and U-16 during the 2015 season (i.e. be born between 1st September 1998 and 31st August 2000), in other words be aged either U-16 or U-17 during the 2016 season. Phase 1 Assessments for selection into 2016 winter-training Performance Courses The nominated players should be U-9 during the 2015 season (be born between 1st September 1999 and 31st August 2004), in other words be aged U-10 during the 2016 season.
